No Place Like Home

8/10

A good movie, but not quite as good as "The Harder They Come"

I found No Place Like Home to be an entertaining movie, although one could see the results of a film that had been re-worked from footage shot several years ago. It felt like some pieces of the film were missing, and that is a shame because I believe it could have been a great movie for Jamaican cinema (up there with "The Harder They Come"), had it been completed as the director initially intended. It was going in a good direction, then it reached a point where it seemed that they had stopped filming and the rest of the movie felt different from then on. All the same I was happy with it as it showed a different side of Jamaica than most Jamaican movies have to date. It looked at the lives of Jamaicans outside of the crime and poverty stricken areas of Kingston (what most Jamaican movies seem to incorporate into the story somehow or another). We were also treated to some beautiful scenery from rural areas of the island as well as given a chance to see the natural beauty of Negril before it was turned into the haven for large resorts that is today. The story also had the potential to be very politically conscious as well, had it been able to run its course. I was happy to hear that at the time of the first screening they were not finished working on the film and more work was to be done with editing and sound. Hopefully they will be able to add a scene or two in there to help the story out.
