The careers of Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna will forever be linked thanks to Alfonso Cuarón’s 2001 drama “Y Tu Mamá También,” which served as an international breakthrough for all three gentlemen (although Luna had a head start with “Amores Perros” the year before). Both actors have gone on to U.S. stardom, Bernal with his Golden Globe-winning role in Amazon’s “Mozart in the Jungle” and Luna with his role as Cassian Andor in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” Luna is reprising this character in the upcoming Disney+ television series “Andor.” Would Bernal join him? The actor told The Independent he’d definitely consider it.
“If Cassian Andor ever needs to find his lost brother or something, then maybe they can call me,” Bernal said when asked about career interest in joining the “Star Wars” franchise. “Or his antagonist. That would be cool actually! In a galaxy far away!

For filmmakers, the process of getting the cultural powers that be to submit your film to contend for the Best International Feature Film Oscar varies from country to country. That Oscar can give your movie an enormous boost. Mexico has been participating in the foreign-language Oscar race since 1957, a year after the category was created. Of the 53 films submitted, nine have been nominated, including five from Arturo Ripstein, two from A.G. Iñárritu (“Amores Perros” and “Biutiful”), one from Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”), and one from Alfonso Cuarón (“Roma”), which was the first Mexican film to win the foreign-language Oscar. Cuarón lobbied the Academy Board of Governors to change the category name to Best International Feature Film.

In a landmark deal, Sony Pictures Television (Spt) has inked a multi-project development deal with acclaimed Chilean writer and author Jose Ignacio ‘Chascas’ Valenzuela, a prominent voice in the LGBTQ community.
The three-project deal kicks off with “El Filo de Tu Piel,” a gay-themed romance based on Valenzuela’s eponymous novel.
“A prolific screenwriter, Chascas’ impeccable storytelling talent is essential to bringing such important LGBTQ representation to the small screen,” said Ana Bond, SVP and MD of international production in Latin America and U.S. Hispanic for Spt.
The new pact dovetails with Spt’s strategy to forge development and production deals with key players around the world. Last year, it signed a co-development and co-production deal with Spain’s The Mediapro Studio, which started with thriller series “Implacables – Mexico.” A development agreement with Colombia’s Fernando Gaitan, the creator of global hit “Ugly Betty,” was unfortunately scuttled after his...

Stephanie Wang-Breal did not set out to make another social issue film, but when she stumbled on a New York Times article about a Queens courtroom that treated sex workers as victims rather than criminals, her documentary filmmaker instincts kicked in.
“It combines two populations of women that [I’ve] made films about for the last eight years,” Wang-Breal said, describing her initial reaction to the story. “Asian women — Asian women immigrants, specifically — and youth who are coming out of the foster care system. Her previous two features, “Wo Ai Ni Mommy” and “Tough Love,” were both released by PBS’s lauded non-fiction series Pov. What’s more, the courtroom was led by an Asian woman, Judge Toko Serita. “Which is just something that is very attractive to me as an Asian female filmmaker.”

Our country tends to treat sex workers like, for lack of a better term, trash. Because sex work is largely illegal in the United States (the one exception is a handful of counties in Nevada, where prostitution is highly regulated), women who sell sex are often arrested and subject to brutal treatment by cops, which forces them to conduct their business in the shadows and puts them at further risk of violence at the hands of pimps and clients. Furthermore, the legal system often disregards whether sex workers are forced...

Telemundo does 'Dance'
MEXICO CITY -- Telemundo has acquired international distribution rights to Dance, Dance, Dance, the first high-definition telenovela from Brazilian network Bandeirantes.
Also, NBC Universal's Telemundo said Tuesday at NATPE that it recently closed two deals with Television Nacional de Chile to adapt two of its formats in Russia. Under an agreement with Sony, the TVN drama series Complices will be adapted for Russia's CTC network. The second deal is with Star Media for an adaptation of the telenovela Amores de Mercado.
Distribution arm Telemundo Internacional has inked a deal with Paris-based DTT channel NRJ 12 for the adaptation of 12 Corazones, Telemundo's popular dating show.
Telemundo Internacional head Marcos Santana said sales increased more than 30% last year thanks to the company's strong presence in Europe and Asia. The Spanish-language broadcaster last year distributed about 35,500 hours of programming worldwide.
