It is a brand new adaptation of the original stories about Conan the Barbarian written by Robert E. Howard, often referred to by the initials R.E.H.
The movie's story is original, though the filmmakers attempted to keep it in the style and flavor of the Howard stories.
NO: And the Arnold Conan movie wasn't either. No Conan movie has followed stories by Robert E. Howard, which has always been a huge mistake because he wrote so many incredible Conan stories. In a sense, Conan was more of a Barbarian detective than giant no-brain muscle-head.

The Conan chronicles took place in a fictional land called Hyboria. REH placed this in the prehistory of Earth, but it is not based in any actual historical or other sources. Hyboria resembles a strange combination of the continents of Europe, Asia and Africa minus the Mediterranean Sea. Conan's homeland, Cimmeria, seems to be right where Germany exists today. In this film, a port city called Messantia is shown, which seems to be where Western Africa exists in our time.
Yes and no, mostly no. The third Conan movie has been in various stages of development for the past 20 years. It was close to being made on a several occasions, but something always came in the way, whether it be creative differences, scheduling problems, or budget. The studio has now pulled the plug on that movie once and for all. The third Conan film, which was supposed to be entitled "Conan the Conqueror", was set to be shot in the late nineties. Arnold Schwarzenegger turned down the role, so Conan was recast as Kevin Sorbo, the film was renamed Kull the Conqueror (1997) (1997), and it was situated in Atlantis rather than Cimmeria. "King Kull" was another of REH's sword-and-sorcery heroes. Kull's stories chronologically predate Conan's, and the first Conan story was a rewrite of a rejected Kull story. Schwarzenegger also played the role of Kalidor, who bears a very close resemblance to Conan, in Red Sonja (1985) (1985). Unfortunately, the production house that made Red Sonja did not have the rights to the Conan films, which is why they had to change the character's name.
This version is actually closer to the REH stories, including the visuals and Conan's physical appearance (and the lack of an accent). There are people who have seen both movies & claim that the Schwarzenegger movie is closer to REH stories.
