Dr. Phlox, as played by John Billingsley on "Star Trek: Enterprise," may be one of the best characters in the franchise. Phlox was on board the Enterprise as part of a species exchange program, and he was eager to serve among humans, tickled by their optimism and amused by their prudishness. He was a Denobulan, a species with its own set of medical ethics (the will of the patient supersedes an Earth doctor's pledge to first do no harm), leading to some principled discussions of right and wrong. His species also married into vast, complex polycules where each man takes three wives and each woman takes three husbands. When asked if that made things complicated on his homeworld, Phlox smiled impishly and replied, "Yes."
Phlox was always upbeat, however, and was eager to explain cultural differences to curious human seekers. Phlox also practiced weird, but scientifically proven, medical techniques, often...

Fox is adding another veteran writer and producer to its roster of broadcast direct deals.
The network has signed Without a Trace and The Last Ship creator Hank Steinberg to such a pact, under which Steinberg will develop drama series that will be wholly owned by Fox. Steinberg is currently an executive producer of Doc, a medical drama set to premiere on Fox in early 2025.
“Hank is an invaluable creative partner and collaborator, already delivering the intense new medical procedural Doc to the network,” said Fox Television Network president Michael Thorn. “Expanding this relationship builds on Hank’s proven track record for creating undeniable, broad-appeal franchises, and with his incomparable voice, will bring even more incredible, unexpected entertainment to Fox’s audiences worldwide.”
Added Steinberg, “The experience of working on Doc with Michael, [head of drama] Brooke Bowman and the entire Fox team has been one of the most rewarding of my career.

Hallmark is known for its romantic and holiday (and romantic holiday) movies. However, when the channel announced that Scott Wolf and Lacey Chabert, who played orphaned Salinger siblings Bailey and Claudia on critically acclaimed series Party of Five, were announced as co-stars in the upcoming film A Merry Scottish Christmas, inquiring minds wanted to know what their on-screen relationship would be! Fear not. Just as they did on the long-running Fox drama, Wolf and Chabert are playing siblings. (Whew!) TV Insider caught up with Wolf at the “Hallmark Channel’s Countdown to Christmas Holiday Celebration” at the Grove in Los Angeles this week to chat about the film, working with Chabert again, his time as Nancy Drew’s dad, and The Nine, an ABC drama that may have been ahead of its time. Your movie is called A Merry Scottish Christmas but it really, really needs to be in the...

Exclusive: The murder of DNC staffer Seth Rich and the wild conspiracy theories it spawned is the subject of a limited series in development at Sony Pictures Television. Titled #I Am Seth Rich, the series, inspired by Andy Kroll’s book A Death on W Street: The Murder of Seth Rich and the Age of Conspiracy, hails from Kroll and For Life and Without A Trace creator Hank Steinberg. Sony Pictures Television, where Steinberg and his Channel Road Productions are under a deal, is the studio.
Written by Steinberg, #I am Seth Rich chronicles the birth of the modern-day conspiracy movement that began following the 2016 murder of DNC staffer Seth Rich. Killjoys Season 5 Episode 10
“It doesn’t matter how your story begins. It’s about who’s with you at the end.”
By their very nature, series finales present considerable challenges even when the showrunner and writers enjoy plenty of advance notice as is the case with the SyFy space drama Killjoys. Operating at a breakneck pace, “Last Dance” does its best to keep up with an abundance of moving parts in an episode that leaves the door open to resume the adventures of Team Awesome Force should the opportunity ever arise. It’s not always successful, but it’s always a lot of fun.

That's how to set up a series finale.
All the resistance members but one were brought back together on Killjoys Season 5 Episode 9.
That one, Jaq, may turn out to be the most important piece in the final battle against The Lady.
The big happening in this penultimate episode was the reunion of the Killjoys and Aneela and Delle Sayeh Kendry, whose presence would soon prove important.
It was sweet watching "sisters" Dutch and Aneela reunite.
It also became clear that the Killjoys and Aneela and Kendry were working at cross purposes to a degree, with the former trying to save Westerley and the latter seeking to preserve Qresh.
It's unlikely that will be too much of an obstacle, however, as they all want to defeat The Lady, first and foremost.
The Killjoys' fight against The Lady has had to be a guerilla action, attacking from the shadows and using guile for lack of resources.

Killjoys Season 5 Episode 9
“Hello, sister. It’s been awhile.”
With only two episodes remaining in the series’ run, Killjoys finds itself in the complex position of attempting to address as many open story threads as possible heading into next week’s finale. Of course, they won’t all receive attention, but the stirring penultimate “Terraformance Anxiety” puts the narrative on an intriguing path that suggests a satisfying conclusion to the on-going escapades of Team Awesome Force. Warner Bros. Television has set its scripted development and current programming leadership in the wake of several promotions and executive departures.
Longtime head of drama development Clancy Collins-White will continue in her role with a title bump from Svp to Evp, Drama Development. The studio’s comedy VP Adrienne Turner has been named Svp and Head of Comedy Development. She succeeds long-time comedy chief Erin Wehrenberg who left in March to run comedy development at ABC.
Additionally, Maddy Horne and Odetta Watkins have been promoted to Evp Current Programming. They replace Wbtv veteran Melinda Hage who recently retired after overseeing the studio’s portfolio of broadcast, cable and streaming scripted dramas and comedies (currently 45) for the past nine years. The department is now being restructured, with Horne overseeing current programming for broadcast series and Watkins supervising series for premium cable channels and on-demand/streaming platforms.
The appointments were made by Susan Rovner and Brett Paul, recently promoted to Warner Bros. Ty Presidents, reporting to Warner Bros. Television Group President and Chief Content Officer Peter Roth. Collins-White, Turner, Horne and Watkins will all report to Rovner.
“Clancy and Adrienne have helped develop some of our most successful shows, skillfully nurturing creative ideas, and giving our valued artists a platform to make their voices heard and to express themselves through their work,” Rovner said. “Maddy and Odetta have expertly collaborated with our talented producers, supporting their ongoing vision and helping them to deliver their best, undeniable work every week, in an increasingly competitive environment.”
At the recent May 2019 broadcast network upfronts, Wbtv secured series orders for four new one-hour series developed by Collins-White and her team, Batwoman and Riverdale spinoff Katy Keene at the CW, thriller Prodigal Son at Fox, and courthouse drama All Rise at CBS. Upcoming non-broadcast series include Watchmen for HBO; Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings and Madam Cj Walker for Netflix; and Veronica Mars for Hulu.
Turner will now oversee the creation of new half-hour series, and will manage Wbtv’s comedy development team. Current comedies produced by Wbtv include Young Sheldon, Mom and the upcoming Bob ♥ Abishola for CBS, as well as The Kominsky Method and the upcoming Aj and The Queen for Netflix, Little Voice for Apple TV+ and Shrill for Hulu.
In her role as Evp, Current Programming, Network Series, Horne will oversee a team managing all creative aspects of ongoing programs for the five broadcast networks. As of June 2019, Wbtv is producing more than 20 scripted broadcast shows, including Young Sheldon, Mom and God Friended Me for CBS, Manifest and Blindspot for NBC, The Flash, Black Lightning, Riverdale, Supergirl, Supernatural and a half dozen more for The CW.
As VP, Current Programming, Premium Cable and On-Demand/Streaming Series, Watkins and her team will oversee Wbtv’s non-broadcast series. Wbtv currently produces nearly 25 shows for cable and streaming platforms, including Westworld for HBO, Shameless for Showtime, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, The Kominsky Method for Netflix, Castle Rock and Veronica Mars for Hulu, Little Voice for Apple TV+, and Titans and Doom Patrol for DC Universe.
Collins-White had served as Svp, Drama Development, since 2010. During this time, Collins-White and the drama team also developed such series as Arrow, Black Lightning, Blindspot, Castle Rock, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Doom Patrol, The Flash, God Friended Me, Gotham, The Leftovers, Lucifer, Manifest, The Originals, Person of Interest, Riverdale, Supergirl, Titans, Westworld and more. Before that, she was ViP, Drama Development, for three years. Collins-White joined Wbtv in 2004 as VP, Current Programming. In that role, she worked on the Jerry Bruckheimer TV–produced dramas Cold Case, Without a Trace and Close to Home, as well as The Nine, among others. Prior to joining Wbtv, Collins-White was Svp, Creative Affairs, MGM Worldwide Television Group and VP, Development, Paramount Domestic Television.
Turner had served as VP, Comedy Development, since 2010. During her tenure, she has developed such half-hour series as 2 Broke Girls, the upcoming Aj and the Queen and Bob ♥ Abishola, Mom, Selfie, Shrill, Splitting Up Together and Trial & Error. Turner started at Wbtv in production before joining the current programming team as Manager, earning promotions to Director and VP before moving into development. While in current programming, Turner managed series such as The Big Bang Theory, Friends, The Mentalist and The Middle.
Horne joined the company in 2010 as VP, Current Programming, and was promoted to Svp in 2016. During her tenure, she has personally managed series such as The Big Bang Theory, Blindspot, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, The Kominsky Method, Mike & Molly, Mom, the revival of Murphy Brown, Riverdale, and Young Sheldon. Prior to joining Wbtv, Horne had been a producer with an overall deal based at Paramount Television. While there, she was an executive producer on the CBS drama series That’s Life. Before that, Horne held various creative positions at CBS, including head of Current Programming, after having previously been Director, Drama Series Development.
Watkins joined Wbtv in 2002 as Director, Current Programming, and was promoted to VP in 2010 and Svp in 2016. She has handled programming responsibilities for series such as Black Lightning, The Carrie Diaries, Castle Rock, The Closer, Cold Case, The Following, Legacies, Major Crimes, Nip/Tuck, The Originals, The Vampire Diaries and Roswell, New Mexico. In the art-free future-world of Ramin Bahrani’s “Fahrenheit 451,“ there are only three acceptable books: the Bible, “To the Lighthouse,” and “Moby-Dick.” These texts have been uploaded to “The Nine,” a ubiquitous future-web and all-swaddling social mediasphere that permeates every aspect of life. All other books, according to Fire Captain Beatty (Michael Shannon) “will make you sick, crazy.” Why the Book of Revelations or a demented metaphorical whale hunt are considered safe but Dostoevsky, Proust, and Morrison must burn is never quite explained.

Can an adaptation of a 65-year-old book feel too futuristic? That’s the dilemma that HBO’s “Fahrenheit 451” TV movie, directed and adapted by “99 Homes'” Ramin Bahrani, presents to us.
On the one hand, much of the world it presents is familiar, especially to those who read Ray Bradbury’s 1953 novel. The core story is there: Guy Montag (Michael B. Jordan) works as a fireman in a dystopian future where, instead of putting out fires, he starts them. He, alongside a team led by Captain Beatty (Michael Shannon), seeks to find remaining books and scraps of literature in the country, and burn them in a spectacle of fire. The fires are broadcast to the citizens, who watch and cheer as the written word is destroyed.
Guy, as our protagonist, grows increasingly skeptical of this, and an encounter with a book-hoarding woman who burns herself alive leaves him questioning everything.

Exclusive: In one of the first buys for the upcoming development cycle, ABC has put in development Lawless, from Mistresses developer/executive producer Kj Steinberg and Shonda Rhimes‘ Shondaland. The project tells the story of Joanna James, a maverick lawyer who returns to her hometown to right the wrongs she left behind. It is inspired by the real life of crusading trucker-turned-lawyer Wynona Ward, founder of Have Justice Will Travel. Former victim of sexual abuse at the hands of her father, Ward got compelled at age 41 by the news of another child in her family getting sexually abused by relatives to go to college and law school and start a group that provides free legal representation and support services to victims of domestic violence in rural areas. Steinberg is writing Lawless, which she is executive producing with Shondaland’s Rhimes and Betsy Beers in conjunction with UK-based producers Esther Douglas and Tara Cook.

"Revolution" is bringing the romance in Season 2, signing Jessica Collins for a four-episode arc as mysterious new addition Cynthia.
"Revolution" showrunner Eric Kripke has this to say about the character: "Cynthia is a beautiful young woman of deep faith, whose winning humor and blazing intelligence capture the heart of one of 'Revolution's' leading characters."
While that could mean anyone from Miles (presumably still grieving Nora and wrestling with his feelings for Rachel) to Neville (still married) to Monroe (single, but psycho), we're wondering if maybe it's Aaron's turn for a little romantic distraction? Unless he's destined to reunite with his wife?
Collins was a regular on AMC's "Rubicon" and ABC's "The Nine," which both lasted just a single season. She also had a supporting role in the Oscar nominated hit drama "Zero Dark Thirty."
"Revolution" Season 2 premieres Sept. 25 in its new timeslot, Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. Et.

"The Vampire Diaries" is off this week so the denizens of Mystic Falls can celebrate Thanksgiving in peace (or should we say pieces?), but we have some news about two guest stars heading to the show - one from "Prison Break" and the other from The Twilight Saga.
Per TV Guide, Camille Guaty, whose credits include "Prison Break" and "The Nine," will play Caitlin, a woman from Professor Shane's (David Alpay) past. Meanwhile, Bewley, who portrayed vampire Demetri in the Twilight films, will play Vaughn. All we know so far about his character is that he's "tough and rugged." Could he be one of The Five that Klaus is searching for?
We should find out more soon as both actors will first appear in Episode 13, with the potential to return for more.

Why do "Bent" and leading man David Walton get no love?
In ensemble comedies, there's always one actor that manages to transform their character and inadvertently transcend the others -- even just a little. It's a totally subjective thing, but as far as I'm concerned, Monica Geller ("Friends"), Jack McFarland ("Will & Grace"), Brad Williams ("Happy Endings"), Ellie Torres ("Cougar Town") and Jay Pritchett ("Modern Family") could or can do no wrong, and they shine just a teensy bit brighter than the rest.
Aside from those characters, my new favourite is Pete Riggins, played to scene-stealing perfection by David Walton. Oh, David Walton. (If this was Twitter, the hashtag would be #swoon.) He isn't exactly sublime or particularly innovative with his performances (based on his latest series, "Bent," the criminally undervalued "Perfect Couples") and he was the one notable exception in the dismal "100 Questions." In fact, he's really a two-note pony...

After the high profile and, what Hollywood execs like to call “high concept” shows of last week’s article, this week I will be going through new pilots which follow two trends I like to call “remaking is breaking” and “Desperate Housewives is over and Grey’s Anatomy has got to end sometime”.
Grey’s Anatomy and Desperate Housewives have been big ratings pulls in the coveted demographic (18-49 if you don’t know) for ABC and have meant big advertising bucks. And, even though Grey’s prolific creator Shonda Rhimes, who will be show running three to five shows next season depending on pickups, has claimed that Grey’s will move past eight seasons, there is a general sense that the show is on the decline and, coupled with the loss of Desperate Housewives at the end of the current season, there is a definite hole in the market.

Grey’s Anatomy Creator’s Pilot Picked up by ABC
Grey’s Anatomy creator, Shonda Rhimes, may have another hit show on her hands, as ABC recently ordered a pilot for Rhimes’ Guilded Lillys concept. The premise behind Guilded Lillys is at once completely different and yet so familiar, I can’t help but wonder if Rhimes is using it as a back up plan if Grey’s doesn’t make it to a ninth season. If the pilot is well received and given a season order, Rhimes would have to choose which series she wants to work on: her long lasting veteran series, or the newborn with so much potential? She can’t be the showrunner on both of them, not unless she’s also been secretly developing a safe method of cloning, but no person can multitask that well.
Guilded Lillys takes place in 1895 of all years, according to EW.

ABC has given the pilot green light to Gilded Lillys, a period drama written/executive produced by The Nine co-creator Kj Steinberg and executive produced by Shonda Rhimes. Set in 1895 New York City, Gilded Lillys is described as an epic love story that follows the opening of the first luxury hotel in the city and the intermingling of love, treachery and disdain between the classes. The project, from ABC Studios and Rhimes’ studio-based Shondaland, was one of ABC’s first buys in August and is now among the network’s first pilot pickups. It follows the orders to Roland Emmerich’s metaphysical drama and Shawn Ryan/Karl Gajdusek’s Last Resort. Steinberg, who spent four seasons on Gossip Girl as co-executive producer, made a two-script deal at ABC Studios at the beginning of this season. Her other project under the pact, Mistresses, is still in contention for a pilot pickup at ABC.

So today I received a mysterious metal box filled with some interesting artifacts from Alcatraz prison. This is obviously a very cool viral marketing campaign for J.J. Abrams' new TV series Alcatraz. I was relieved when nothing blew up when I first opened the box. The metal box contained a visitor map of Alcatraz island giving a little historical background, a newspaper clipping talking about the prison being closed down, a postcard from a little girl who visited The Rock about an interesting experience she had, a little flower, a magazine book review, a Mustang car pin, photos of prison inmates (characters from the show), and a very cool metal Alcatraz prison cell key.
There's a note that came along with the package saying, "Over the next few months, we will be looking to you, and your audience, to help us uncover the mysteries of the island." I look...

In time for the shows Us debut this month, Fox have released a new poster for Alcatraz, the brand new series from J.J. Abrams. From the official synopsis (posted below the poster) it sounds like Alcatraz will have a Lost-esque vibe, with the famous prison standing in for the strange island. The shows stars Sarah Jones, Sam Neill, Jorge Garcia and Parminder Nagra.
When San Francisco Police Department Det. Rebecca Madsen (Sarah Jones, “Sons of Anarchy”) is assigned to a grisly homicide case, a fingerprint leads her to a shocking suspect: Jack Sylvane (guest star Jeffrey Pierce, “The Nine”), a former Alcatraz inmate who died decades ago. Given her family history – both her grandfather and surrogate uncle, Ray Archer (Robert Forster, “Jackie Brown”), were guards at the prison – Madsen’s interest is immediately piqued, and once the enigmatic, knows-everything-but-tells-nothing government agent Emerson Hauser (Sam Neill, “Jurassic Park”) tries to impede her investigation,...
