The word "genie" in original Arabic is actually "djinn" which stands both for a genie and a demon as well.
Loosely based on a myth of a genie of the lamp from the classic novel A Thousand and One Arabian Nights about a young boy Aladdin and a genie of the magic lamp. Much like Aladdin, Adil is also a teenager, only now his masters are a modern Western family.
