Bigger and longer are not always better. Case in point: Freud’s Last Session, the lavish film based on a modest off-Broadway play that captivated theater audiences a decade ago. Playwright Mark St. Germain worked with director Matthew Brown (The Man Who Knew Infinity) to reshape his two-character drama about an imaginary conversation between Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis as they debate the existence of God. That provocative exchange is still in the movie, and it sometimes crackles, thanks to the performances of Matthew Goode as Lewis and, especially, Anthony Hopkins as Freud. But the heart of the story is constantly undermined by a surfeit of asides about Lewis’ experiences in the First World War, Freud’s highly charged relationship with his daughter Anna, and several other subplots.
The main culprit here may be the current fashion for time-fractured, nonlinear narratives. It is rare these days to see a movie...

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. And sometimes it’s a loaded symbol in an imagined conversation between world-famous “sex doc” Sigmund Freud and converted atheist C.S. Lewis.
In the stage play turned only-slightly-less-stagy film, “Freud’s Last Session,” these two titans of 20th-century thought meet at the psychoanalyst’s London home in early September 1939 to discuss God, father figures (both spiritual and biological) and, of course, sex. Freud famously had a way of making everything about sex, and once he lights his cigar — a prop that Freud treats every bit as portentously as one might Chekhov’s proverbial gun — the subject effectively chases out their more gripping disagreement over faith.
Expanding only slightly on the stuffiness of his tweedy 2015 biopic, “The Man Who Knew Infinity,” director Matthew Brown has taken the play by Mark St. Germain and whittled away a bit of the talk (thereby making room for formative...

Hollywood has tried for decades to make psychoanalysis compelling for the layman, whether that’s David Cronenberg’s “A Dangerous Method” to Bill Condon’s “Kinsey.” Director Matthew Brown (“The Man Who Knew Infinity”) is the latest to look at the density of psychology, philosophy and existentialism with his quasi-historical drama “Freud’s Last Session.”
The film tells the story of a fictional meeting between Sigmund Freud (Anthony Hopkins) and author C.S. Lewis (Matthew Goode). Freud is suffering from oral cancer while Lewis has embraced a newfound love for Christianity. The pair meet in the hopes of crafting some type of relationship and spend the day going back and forth on the everything from God to the meaning of life.

On the heels of the wonderful 2019 The Two Popes, in which Anthony Hopkins starred as Pope Benedict XVI in an imagined conversation with Jonathan Pryce’s future Pope Francis, Hopkins is once again involved in the same kind of cinematic historical fictional meeting as founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud, who is engaged in a private debate with The Chronicles of Narnia author and theologian C.S. Lewis (played by Matthew Goode) on the existence of God. As with The Two Popes, there is no proof whatsoever that any meeting ever took place, but it clearly provides lots of material to wrap your head around. That is exactly what Mark St. Germain did in creating his 2009 play Freud’s Last Session, which was built on the 1967 Harvard lectures of Dr. Armond M. Nicholi Jr in his presentation “The Question of God: C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud Debate God, Love, Sex, and the Meaning of Life.

If you’ve seen the British satire “Toast of London,” chances are that voiceover engineer Clem Fandango’s name still rings in your ears. Now Shazad Latif, the man behind Fandango, Ash Tyler on “Star Trek: Discovery” and Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde on “Penny Dreadful,” has nabbed his first romantic lead in “What’s Love Got to Do With It?”

In an aim to help now-shuttered independent theaters, IFC Films will allow cinemas to screen 200 of its library titles for free once they open back up. The distributor hopes that favorites like “Frances Ha,” “Y Tu Mamá También,” and even “The Human Centipede” will help drive audiences back to theaters in the coming months, a time when fewer and fewer new releases are being scheduled.
The Indie Theater Revival Project‘s offerings will be available to theaters beginning May 29, with traditional rental fees for library titles waived for theaters in the first 30 days that they’re open, starting from whatever date they reopen their doors. That means more money in the pockets in the form of ticket sales for local theater owners who have been faced with a near-zero revenue stream after closing their doors last month.

Lead producer Lena Vurma of Dragonfly Films confirmed Mongrel’s involvement in the project, which recently became the first project with a German director to receive support from the Tfi/Sloan Filmmaker Fund. (The production received an initial $75,000 toward production and pre-production.)
“We are very excited to be going on this adventure with our friends, the producers Lena Vurma and Mary Young Leckie. We loved the script immediately. It’s so smart and compassionate, filled with both great joy and stunning gravitas. We are convinced that Thorsten Klein will make an extraordinary movie with enormous contemporary relevance,” Charlotte Mickie, president of Mongrel International, told Screen Daily.

04.27.17: This list is now final. While I may in the future see additional films that were released in the awards year of 2016, no more films will be added to this list. (I may add links to reviews of films listed here.)
This ranking includes only new theatrical releases viewed for the awards year of 2016 (for eligibility for the Academy Awards and the Ofcs and Awfj awards); some films released in the UK without Us releases (and so ineligible for those awards this year) may also be included, for my own bookkeeping purposes. Links go to my review. Numbers after each entry are Date First Viewed/NYC Release Date/London Release Date; year is 2016 unless otherwise noted.

The star of Slumdog Millionaire on his journey from star-struck wannabe to playing Nicole Kidman’s son in his new film, Lion
After appearing in the TV series Skins, aged 16, Dev Patel, has not looked back. He starred in the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire, The Second Best Marigold Hotel (as a super-keen hotel manager) and The Man Who Knew Infinity (as the great Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan). Now he stars in Lion, based on the true story of Saroo Brierley, an Indian street boy who got lost 1,000 miles from home, was put in an orphanage and sent to Australia for adoption. Twenty-five years on, Saroo started to search for his mother, using Google maps.
Congratulations on your Golden Globe nomination for Lion. Is Saroo the most demanding role you’ve played?
I’m 26 and, like most actors my age, hungry to show emotional range. This role enabled me to play a character suffering real pain,...

“Lion” is designed as a crowdpleaser that will tug at filmgoers’ tear ducts and heartstrings. Crafted by a largely Australian crew of Hollywood outsiders led by Garth Davis in his feature debut, the decently reviewed Weinstein Co. release (November 25) is Harvey Weinstein’s Oscar mission. So far it’s landed six Critics Choice, four Golden Globe, and two SAG nominations; all include supporting players Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel. The movie is holding well in limited release, heading into national expansion over the holidays.
What did they do right?
1. Find a riveting true story.
Back in 2013 when Sundance Channel series “Top of the Lake” debuted at the Sundance Festival, See Saw Films producers Iain Canning and Emile Sherman (Oscar-winner “The King’s Speech”) discovered an article about Australian emigre Saroo Brierley, who had lost his family at the age of five in Calcutta and, 20 years later, found them again via Google Earth.

In Dev Patel’s career there will be pre-Lion movies, and post-Lion movies.
Pre-Lion, the British-born actor of Indian heritage seemed to play clean-cut, skinny, cute, but slightly nerdy guys. Think of him as well-meaning romantic Sonny Kapoor in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Chappie’s bespectacled robot designer Deon Wilson, and even as unlikely trivia champ Jamal in 2008’s Best Picture-winning Slumdog Millionaire, Patel’s breakthrough film.
But Lion, which finished second only to La La Land in the battle for the Toronto International Film Festival’s prestigious People’s Choice Award, proves he can be something much different. Burly, masculine, quiet, sexy…and Australian.
