The script for the movie was written by (Nia Vardalos), who also directed and starred in it.
No. Although I Hate Valentine's Day reunites Nia Vardalos and (John Corbett) from My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) (2002), the two movies are not related to each other. In My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Vardalos played a Greek waitress named Toula Portokalos about to marry Corbett's Ian Miller. In I Hate Valentine's Day, Vardalos plays Genevieve Gernier, a florist, and Corbett is Greg Gatlin, an ex-lawyer turned owner of a tapas bar called "Get On Tapas".
Tapas is the name for a variety of small Spanish snacks served cold (such as cheeses, pickled mushrooms, open-faced sandwiches, etc.) or warm (such as meatballs, hot-fried potatoes, etc.). They are usually salty in order to encourage the drinking (and sales) of alcohol and or may be served as appetizers before the main entree.
It's Valentine's Day. Genevieve is bemoaning this "hollow sham" of a day. After talking with Tim the delivery guy (Jay O. Sanders), however, she begins to realize that her idea of love was all wrong...it's not just romantic gestures. She pays a visit to her father (John Tormey) and confesses to him how his cheating has messed up her ability to have a relationship with a man. Later, her dad sends her a box of chocolates with a note of apology. Meanwhile, Greg is bemoaning how stupid he was for screwing up his chances with Genevieve and how much he misses her. Suddenly, he realizes that he has to do something stupid to get her back. He gets an old red dress and an antique stool and stands outside her window singing, "If I can't love you...what good am I?", accompanied by the jazz band from his restaurant. "You're an idiot," she calls down to him, "but I love you." All the people standing in the street suddenly rearrange themselves to form a heart. Greg holds out a purple rose and asks Genevieve to be his Valentine. Genevieve smiles widely and rushes outside into Greg's arms. "Enough of your dumb system," Greg says, and they agree to be boyfriend and girlfriend.
