Unless a house has suddenly fallen on you in the land of Oz, then you know that the Wicked movie, which premiered last Friday, is already one of the most talked about films of the year (it grossed $164 million during opening weekend). The blockbuster, starring Ariana Grande-Butera and Cynthia Erivo, has drawn pink and green fans to the theater in droves, all wanting to get a glimpse of Glinda the Good and Elphaba.

For a decade and change, Hugh Grant was the king of the romantic comedy, the perfect floppy-haired vessel for all women (and men) to pin their dreams on made all the more endearing by his seeming inability to handle such affection. Nowadays, he’s more at home playing villainous roles in films like “Paddington 2” and the recently released “Heretic,” but for many, including filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, he will always be that silly man who played with our hearts. While looking back on his career during a recent interview with Letterboxd, Grant recalled an exchange he had with Tarantino where the writer/director shared his adulation for the 2007 musical rom-com “Music and Lyrics.”
“He does love that film. I had this weird experience that some do in London: this sweaty person pushed his way through the crowd to me, and it was Quentin Tarantino,” Grant said. “And to my enormous surprise,...

Kristen Johnston will star alongside Leanne Morgan in the latter’s upcoming Netflix comedy series, Variety has learned.
The untitled multi-cam comedy was picked up at Netflix in April with a 16-episode order. Morgan co-created the series with Susan McMartin and Chuck Lorre. The role marks a reunion for Lorre and Johnston, as Johnston previously appeared in the CBS multi-cam “Mom,” which Lorre also co-created.
The official description for Morgan’s series states: “Leanne’s life takes an unexpected turn when her husband of 33 years leaves her for another woman. Starting over when you’re a grandmother and in menopause isn’t exactly what she had in mind, but with the help of her family she will navigate this new chapter with grace, dignity and jello salad.”
Johnston will star in the series regular role of Carol, Leanne’s sister. The character is said to be Leanne’s complete opposite.

Drew Barrymore apparently doesn’t mind that Hugh Grant compared her singing voice to barking dogs.
Interviewed on her own show about Music and Lyrics co-star Hugh Grant’s criticism, Barrymore responded with her own demonstration of her talents, a hairbrush-as-microphone performance of the movie’s big song, “Way Back Into Love.”
“Oh, Hugh… bert. Hubert,” she said, before singing again, “That’s for youuuuuu.”
She also responded to Grant’s remarks that her singing voice was “just horrendous,” wherein he said barking dogs have done better vocalizations.
“If you know Hugh, that is his way of loving you,” she said.
“I swear, if you know Hugh, like, that is his way of loving you. I swear, okay, so it’s funny, too, because there’s this thing going around with him and Ashley Graham on the red carpet, and people are like, he’s such a curmudgeon and she’s so thrown.

Drew Barrymore has reacted to Hugh Grant’s brutal complaint about her.
The actor co-starred with Grant in the romcom Music & Lyrics as a songwriter paired with a washed-up pop star to create a chart-topping hit for a teenage pop star (Haley Bennett).
Earlier this week, Grant was asked about the film during an interview segment that saw him answer “the web’s most-searched questions”. One of these was: “Does Hugh Grant actually sing in Music & Lyrics?”
He told Wired: “Yes, well I do, but I’m auto-tuned beyond belief. Actually, that’s not true – I’m auto-tuned a bit, but not as much as some.”
Grant then said of his co-star: “Drew Barrymore was in that film with me and I don’t think she’d mind me saying her singing is just horrendous. I’ve heard dogs bark better than she sings.”

Drew Barrymore defended Hugh Grant after he caused a stir at the Oscars last weekend for making things awkward during a red carpet interview with ABC’s pre-show host Ashley Graham.
In the now-viral video, things went south when the model-actress missed his joke about the novel “Vanity Fair,” attributing the reference to the magazine of the same name’s famous Oscars after-party. He refused to appease her follow-up questions with more than a few words, answering that he was rooting for “no one in particular” and was wearing “just my suit.”
Though the internet accused him of being “shady,” his friend Barrymore wrote it off as a classic Grant moment.

Drew Barrymore didn’t take Hugh Grant’s recent comments about her “horrendous” singing to heart.
The pair starred in the 2007 rom-com “Music and Lyrics” together, with Grant recently dissing Barrymore’s singing voice in an interview.
In true Barrymore fashion, she poked fun at his remarks on Instagram, writing on a clip: “My response to Hugh Grant.”
She then belted out a bit of their duet from the film, “Way Back into Love”.

Hugh Grant has picked the hill he wants to die on: A “Notting Hill” Easter egg, to be exact.
The deadpan actor revealed during a Wired video alongside “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” co-stars Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez that he found the ending of 1999 rom-com “Notting Hill” to be “nauseating” due to a small detail director Roger Michell included.
“Notting Hill,” which has been considered by many a rom-com classic over the years, stars Julia Roberts as Anna Scott, a famous actress who falls for local British bookstore owner William Thacker (Grant) while filming on location. The final scene shows Anna cuddling with William on a park bench as he reads a novel, one that had a special meaning to late director Michell.
“In that nauseating moment on the bench at the end, I’m reading ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’ by Louis de Bernières, which was going to be his next film,...

Hugh Grant has divulged a subtle “in-joke” hidden away in the “nauseating” final scene of Notting Hill.
The British actor appeared in the 1999 romcom as bookshop owner William Thacker alongside Julia Roberts, who played Hollywood film star Anna Scott.
In the film’s closing moments, William and Anna can be seen cosied up together on a park bench, with Grant’s character reading a book.
In a new interview with Wired, Grant was asked if he remembered what book he was reading in the scene.
The actor, who referred to the scene as “nauseating”, not only remembered, but revealed how it was an in-joke placed there by director Roger Michell, who died in 2021.
“In that nauseating moment on the bench at the end, I’m reading Captain Corelli’s Mandolin by Louis de Bernières, which was going to be his next film,” Grant said, adding: “So it’s a little in-joke from Roger Michell,...

Hugh Grant has mocked Drew Barrymore’s singing in the romantic comedy Music & Lyrics.
The actor co-starred with Barrymore in the 2007 film as washed-up pop star Alex Fletcher, who is hired to write a chart-topping hit for an aspiring teen singe (Haley Bennett).
Barrymore plays Sophie Fisher, the songwriter that Grant’s character is teamed up with. During the film, they regularly sing the songs they’re writing, which Grant said required auto-tuning.
Speaking to Wired for a segment in which he answered “the web’s most-searched questions”, Grant was asked: “Does Hugh Grant actually sing in Music & Lyrics?”

Ivy crafted one of the Nineties’ great lost indie-pop gems with their 1997 cult classic Apartment Life. It’s one of the decade’s sharpest portraits of modern urban romance: exquisitely moody adult love songs, all purred by Paris-born chanteuse Dominique Durand in her groovy French accent. 40 years ago, Hugh Grant made his film debut in 1982’s “Privileged,” a little-seen effort about undergraduates at Oxford (where Grant studied English lit), which was funded by the Oxford University Film Foundation. In its July 14, 1982, review, Variety said the film — which also marked the bows of producer Andy Paterson, director Michael Hoffman, actors Imogen Stubbs and James Wilby and composer Rachel Portman — would have “limited interest” for most audiences but that the actor, billed as Hughie Grant, gives a convincing performance as an “aristocratic dropout.”
For the next five years, Grant did sketch comedy, played the classics onstage and worked in TV; his first mention in Variety was for the 1985 miniseries “Jenny’s War,” playing the Raf pilot son of Dyan Cannon.
He boosted his profile with the 1987 Merchant-Ivory film “Maurice,” adapted from E.M. Forster. The film also featuring his “Privileged” costar Wilby and the two shared the best-actor prize at the Venice Film Festival.

Drew Barrymore is at a crossroads.
No, not figuratively; in her life and career, the actor-turned-director-turned-talk-show-host has never been more confident in her path. But literally speaking, she’s a bit stuck.
On a Tuesday evening in April, the Variety Power of Women honoree arrived at a Chelsea photo studio, only to find a broken elevator. It’s posing a problem because Barrymore hurt her ankle, making the trek up five flights of stairs more perilous than it needs to be.
The gaggle of publicists and assistants who surround the actor debate what to do: Reschedule the shoot? Carry her upstairs? Never mind. Barrymore takes matters into her own hands, opting to summit the staircase alone — though a member of her team helps hoist her up the final steps.
What’s life without a little excitement?

Jennifer Lopez wants to save it. Netflix wants to save it. Rose Matafeo wants to save it. Indie film has already saved it. But this weekend, “Marry Me” proved to be another uninspiring example of the studio-backed American rom-com. Even with a title that seemed custom-made for the return of superstar JLo to a genre she appears to genuinely love, plus the multi-hyphenate performing multiple original songs in the film, the film opened this pre-Valentine’s Day weekend to $8 million.
You could blame the slow return of women to theaters, Super Bowl Weekend, or that the film played for free on Peacock; any or all could be true. But here’s another reason: “Marry Me,” like so many rom-coms before it, isn’t very good. While Lopez is an extraordinary performer, all those songs start to feel like product placements. Haley Bennett, the first recipient of EnergaCamerimage Film Festival’s New Generation Acting Award, will follow Joe Wright’s “Cyrano” with Whoopi Goldberg-produced “Till,” about the infamous murder of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old African American boy lynched in Mississippi in 1955 after being accused of “offending” white woman Carolyn Bryant. Her husband and his half-brother were acquitted, but later confessed to the murder.
“In America, it was a reckoning, but I didn’t have a deep knowledge of it. I thought: ‘I can’t be the only one.’ Bringing this story to light again, at the time when we desperately need it, was important to me,” Bennett tells Variety at the festival in Toruń, Poland, admitting that playing Bryant meant “carrying around hate and fear, paranoia and anger.”
“I don’t want to live in ignorance. If I can learn something about the history of America, then I am not standing still.

A tribute album to Adam Schlesinger being released today on Bandcamp includes cover songs by two actors who collaborated with the late songwriter on projects, Rachel Bloom and Sarah Silverman, as well as contemporaries of Schlesinger’s from the rock world like Kay Hanley, Nada Surf and Tanya Donnelly.
“Saving for a Custom Van,” which takes its name from the title track of the essential Fountains of Wayne album “Utopia Parkway,” is a 31-track collection that covers the breadth of Schlesinger’s performing and songwriting career. Besides familiar FoW songs from the late ’90s and 2000s, the collection also includes songs from his six-season run as the core house writer for TV’s “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” the films “Music and Lyrics” and “That Thing You Do!,” and Schlesinger’s other long-standing band, Ivy. Even two of the songs he wrote for “Josie and the Pussycats” figure into the expansive track list.

Haley Bennett was 19 when she made her film debut as pop star Cora Corman in 2007’s “Music and Lyrics.” About nine years later, after appearing in about a dozen more movies, she was hailed as Hollywood’s next big starlet for her starring role opposite Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt in the 2016 remake of “The Magnificent Seven” and for her work as the mysterious Megan in “The Girl on the Train,” the adaptation of the novel of the same name.
Despite the success and the spotlight, the now-32-year-old actor says she never felt particularly welcome in the full filmmaking process until “Swallow,” her new drama from first-time feature film writer-director Carlo Mirabella-Davis, in theaters March 6. Not only does Bennett star in the movie, but the indie also marks her producing debut.

Wedged between the Oscars and the start of the summer movie season (which now begins sometime in April), the tail-end of winter can feel like the deepest of doldrums on the annual movie calendar. Fortunately, Netflix is doing what it can to sustain its subscribers from now until spring.
This month’s new additions to the company’s streaming library offer a little something for everyone, from the soaring acrobatics of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” to the chilled mysteries of Debra Granik’s “Winter’s Bone,” and the heartbreaking drama of Asghar Farhadi’s “A Separation.” March’s Netflix Originals include Chiwetel Ejiofor’s directorial debut, Lukas Dhont’s controversial “Girl,” and the star-studded beefcake spectacle of “Triple Frontier.” “Music and Lyrics” and “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist” join the internet’s deepest stable of 21st century rom-coms,...

There’s at least one person who considers Adam Sandler a better actor than Jake Gyllenhaal: Drew Barrymore, who’s in the unique position of having worked with them both. The actress appeared on “The Late Late Show With James Corden” last night and was forced to partake in its most dreaded segment: Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts, a spin on truth-or-dare in which guests are forced to either answer revealing questions or eat something disgusting.
Barrymore had to choose between ranking the respective talents of Sandler, Gyllenhaal, and Hugh Grant or eating a turkey testicle; she opted for the former, and listed them as such: 1) Sandler, 2) Grant, 3) Gyllenhaal. When it comes to these challenges, there really is no accounting for taste. Barrymore appeared alongside Gyllenhaal in “Donnie Darko,” starred opposite Grant in “Music and Lyrics,” and collaborated with Sandler on “The Wedding Singer,” “50 First Dates,...

The mood got decidedly funnier and edgier in this year’s Emmy race for Original Music and Lyrics. It was a badly needed tonic for the country. Most notably, Tina Fey joined the musical fray for the first time, looking for her 10th Emmy with the hilarious “Hell No,” a tribute to Beyonce’s “Lemonade” (featuring an enraged Tituss Burgess) from “Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt.”
But, given the current zeitgeist, it’s not surprising that Chance the Rapper was nominated for his Run-d.M.C.–inspired rap tribute to Obama, “Last Christmas,” from “Saturday Night Live,” or that Rachel Bloom was back again with the raunchy “We Tapped That Ass” from “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” There was even room for the excruciatingly uncomfortable “The Ballad of Claus Jorstad (Devil Stool)” from “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and and the animated burlesque of “Jing-a-Ling-a-Ling” from “Duck the Halls: A Mickey Mouse Christmas Special.”

Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.
In many ways, Marc Lawrence’s 2007 rom-com Music and Lyrics begins like a fever dream. Not only does Hugh Grant suddenly appear onscreen with a sky-reaching hairdo, he’s also singing to the camera and wearing tight trousers.

How far he'll go, indeed.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, the Pulitzer Prize-winning actor, composer, rapper, writer and official MacArthur "Genius," is one win away from joining the likes of Audrey Hepburn and Whoopi Goldberg with an Egot -- that is, an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony.
Miranda earned his first Oscar nomination on Tuesday morning, with Moana's "How Far I'll Go" competing for Best Original Song. If he were to take home the Academy Award, he'd not only Egot, but be the youngest person to do so (at 37) and have done it fastest (in less than a decade).

Anna Kendrick is set to move from Pitch Perfect 3 to Nicole, the story of the daughter of Santa Claus...
The festive season is finally over. The decorations are down, the lights are in storage, and you don't have to start thinking about Christmas shopping again for a good few months. But rest assured that the production line of Yuletide movies continues as the year trundles on, with the latest being Nicole.
Nicole is a movie that Disney is making, about a female Santa Claus. More specifically, with a slight Arthur Christmas twinge here, it's about the daughter of Santa Claus, who has to take over when her father retires, and her brother bottles it.
And now we learn that Anna Kendrick is in negotiations to take the title role in the movie. The film is being directed by Marc Lawrence (who made the really good fun...

Haley Bennett is on fire. Or rather, her apartment is about to be. "Shall we have a fire?" she asks, hanging out at her Tribeca loft on one of the first cool afternoons of fall. Soon she's are ensconced on a deep sofa, surrounded by pillows and animals ("That's River, my rescue boy," Bennett says as a small dog makes a nest on my lap) and clutching warm cups of herbal tea. To add to the coziness factor, Bennett, 28, is still in P.J.s, her hair piled in a messy bun atop her head.

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present and future.
Haley Bennett is all smiles. The female lead of Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming “The Magnificent Seven” remake is equally bubbly when talking about her nerve-jangling audition process, the physically demanding shoot and what she’s got on the docket in the coming months (“I’m going to need a vacation from the vacation!”), but even all that sunshine can’t obscure that Bennett is a serious actress who is only further growing into her career with grace. Bennett first popped up on the big screen in Marc Lawrence’s 2007 rom-com “Music and Lyrics” — yes, that was her playing the spacey but sweet pop star who saves Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore’s songwriting career — and has spent the next decade carefully choosing roles across a wide berth of genres and budgets.

Discussing the representation of women in Hollywood is never, you know, a fun topic, especially when it comes to below-the-line departments. In 2016, there are still glaring examples of a lack of progress for women.
While an improvement over years past, here’s just a quick sampling of accomplishments women were not recognized for: narration, music composition, writing in many categories, stunt coordination… There are plenty of categories, as well, where only one or two women were nominated, often with a male partner — such as Writing for a Comedy, where the sole female nominee is Sharon Horgan alongside Rob Delaney for “Catastrophe.”
But rather than dwell on that, let’s acknowledge some of the accomplished nominees who have a chance to be recognized for their achievements this year. Because regardless of gender, they’re awesome.

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey made history Thursday morning. The pals were nominated in the Guest Actress in a Comedy Emmy category for hosting “Saturday Night Live.”
That’s not unusual — “SNL” hosts are nominated for Emmys all the time. But here’s what’s unique: Poehler and Fey were nominated as a single, combined entity. Earlier this year, the TV Academy accepted their joint submission, and their names appeared together on nomination ballots.

That’s never happened in an acting category before because, well, a person is generally one person. But this was a unique circumstance: “SNL” guest hosts are eligible for guest star Emmys – but usually even comedy teams are nominated separately. (For example, Keegan-Michael Key is nominated this year for “Key & Peele” in the supporting comedy actor category, but Jordan Peele is not.
