I was surprised...this really wasn't a very good episode. Surprised...because all the previous episodes had simply been terrific!
When the episode begins, a gangly goofball named Lt. Lathrop (Peter Fonda) arrives late for the briefing. It seems he was just reassigned to the base and it General Savage's new bombardier. Well, despite appearances, Lathrop makes a HUGE impression on his first mission. Not only was he excellent at his job, but he managed to save the General's life! As a result, he's up for a medal and earns some time off. However, from this point on, Lathrop is essentially a big dummy...making many foolish choices. What's next?
The biggest problem with this episode is that there is too much in the show and it all happens way, way too fast to be the least bit realistic. Had they perhaps made it a two-part episode or cut a bit of the material it would have worked better. Additionally, it wasn't all that realistic as you can only assume by the end of the story that Lathrop would have been jailed for his actions and, oddly, he isn't. Confusing and a rare miss.
