The bombers have been targeting a factory and yet, oddly, the factory is still there and the production hasn't changed. The mission leader is sure they hit the target....so General Savage decides to fly a stripped down lone bomber and take a look for himself...at practically treetop level! Not surprisingly, he is shot down and soon he's in a fight for his life....against the angry local Frenchmen! After he's caught by them, they are debating whether to hang him or not....and the consensus is leaning towards hanging!
I have no idea if the French folks in the countryside hated American bomber crews like they did in this episode. I do know by talking with a man who was in a bomber crew that was shot down over Germany...and he told me that they were told to avoid the locals, as it meant almost certain death...as they'd just beat them to death. Instead, it was actually BETTER to be captured by the German military....and much safer! So, perhaps the plot about the French countryside isn't as farfetched as it seems.
Regardless, it is an interesting episode, albeit a bit farfetched for a general to be flying that low in a B-17! Worth seeing...but not great.
