Gillian Anderson, who played Dana Scully on X-Files (and Data Nully in this episode) was reportedly a big fan of ReBoot, and had asked to visit Mainframe Entertainment to see how the show was made. Around the time the episode aired, Gillian was married to Clyde Klotz, who was an art director for both ReBoot and The X-Files.
The plot is both a spoof of and a loving tribute to the X-Files series. Gillian Anderson, who played Dana Scully on X-Files, even guest stars as the voice of Scully's counterpart here, while voice actor Scott McNeil voices Mulder's counterpart.
The CGI special agents are a double reference to "Common Gateway Interface" and "Computer-Generated Imagery".
The milk carton Mike the TV holds up during his interview has both "Milk" and the French word equivalent "Lait" written on it. This is due to the fact that the series was produced in Canada, which uses both English & French as its official languages & thus most packaging is labeled in both.
