Paul Dooley in The Golden Girls (1985)

Trivia

Empty Nests

The Golden Girls

Edit
Rita Moreno called this episode a disaster. She said that Susan Harris was ill and couldn't do rewrites, and that the episode needed to be fixed. She also felt that the "Golden Girls" were tense during taping, since they also hated working on the episode.
Fans consider this episode the worst episode of the entire series.
Paul Dooley starred in a previous episode "Love, Rose" as Rose's date Isaac Q. Newton.
This episode was a back-door pilot for a potential spin-off series starring Rita Moreno and Paul Dooley. However, it was unpopular with audiences, so the concept was retooled and became the series Empty Nest (1988). Only David Leisure's character as the annoying womanizing neighbor was brought over to the new series, though his name changed from Oliver to Charley Dietz and his profession changed from a test pilot to a cruise ship worker. However, the living room and kitchen set remained the same, and one of the lead characters is still a physician, although played by a different actor (Richard Mulligan in the retooled series, who guest-starred in some later "Golden Girls" episodes starting in season four.
Renee and the ladies decide to watch "Nightmare on Elm Street 4" to relax. At the time of this episode (May 16, 1987), there was no fourth movie in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" franchise. The third installment, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), had just come out on February 27th. A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988) didn't premiere until August 19, 1988.
