Released as a stand-alone DVD in Japan, 'X - Yochou' became the first episode on the American DVD release of the 'X' television series and can be found on 'X' DVD 1. For purposes of continuity in the fan community it is considered to be a part of the television series, but as it was never aired and was created for the home video market only as an OAV (Original Animated Video), it is listed separately.
The Japanese DVD release of 'X - Yochou' came several months before the 'X' television series began airing, serving as a preview of the show to come for eager viewers.
As extras on the Japanese DVD release, an interview with director Yoshiaki Kawajiri and brief interviews with voice actors Kenichi Suzumura (Kamui) and Junichi Suwabe (Fuuma) were included. The voice actor interview culminated with clips from a recorded performance of a special 'X' song not included in either the 'X - Yochou' episode or the later series. The song, called Yakusoku (Promise) was released on two separate limited CD singles (each featuring one of the actors). The director interview with Mr. Kawajiri ended up on the second American 'X' television series DVD, while neither the song footage or the CD singles were released in the United States.
'X - Yochou' marked the first animated appearance of Kakyou Kuzuki. He did not appear in the 'X' movie made in 1996 (his character had been replaced with Shougo Asagi, a movie-unique character who fought using water and later made an appearance in 'Tsubasa Chronicle'), because his character had not yet been written into the 'X' manga that both the television series and the film are based on.
