Last November, horror director Eli Roth surprised audiences with a slasher that was less sexy than expected. His film “Thanksgiving” still found a huge following — bringing in $46.5 million at the box office and securing itself a sequel for 2025. But when compared to Roth’s earlier cult favorites (think “The Green Inferno” or “Hostel II”), this R-rated effort from 2023 is decidedly lacking in one thing: nudity.
Now, a year later, Damien Leone has revolutionized genre indies by doing the opposite with his unrated… and, at times, unclothed… “Terrifier 3.” A bareback display of ultraviolence, the Christmas-themed sequel broke records in October — earning $88 million and briefly becoming the No. 1 film in the country. It also features what might be the most brutal shower sex scene ever made. So, what’s different?

Every horror fan has their blind spots, those subgenres or movements in movies that they just haven’t gotten around to for whatever reason. The two biggest for me are giallo (which thanks to the Criterion Channel I’m currently working on) and the films of the first decade of the 21st century. For me it was simply a matter of not having the time. As these films were coming out, I got married to my lovely, but non-horror-loving wife, and my children were born. I couldn’t usually get away to check out the latest Saw film or sneak Hostel 2 into my DVD player while the kid was taking a snooze on my lap. That’s just how things go. There’s also the fact that I was pretty devoted to critics like Roger Ebert at the time.
Though I still have respect for many of them, it...

In medieval Europe, whole communities came together at public executions, drinking and dancing and collectively purging their sins through ceremonial bloodshed. In early 21st-century America, smaller groups gathered at multiplexes for a similar rite: Exorcizing national guilt by watching graphic torture scenes in horror movies. The latter was, of course, sanitized — the actors in these films were only pretending to be in pain, and the audience was distanced from the action by the invisible wall of a movie screen. But the psychological processes at play weren’t so different.
So-called “torture porn” — a term everyone but the critic who coined it, David Edelstein, seems to hate — developed in the 2000s alongside parallel waves of ultraviolent nihilism in French, Japanese, and South Korean cinema, not to mention the neo-grindhouse revival. But there are a...

It’s a bad time to be Eli Roth.
A miscalculation of near-mythic proportions, “Borderlands” has a whopping six percent on Rotten Tomatoes heading into its opening weekend. Those bad reviews (IndieWire gave it a “C-“) are the least of the “Hostel” filmmaker’s problems, as Lionsgate’s misguided video game adaptation has inspired assessments of not only the director’s filmography but also whether his impact on pop culture has been at all valuable.
This ranking can’t account for all of that. If you’re a fan of the types of genre films that Roth makes, read on. If you’re not, do not pass go, do not collect $200, and enjoy the “Borderlands” dogpile — a massive multiplayer online affair now available free of charge.
Last year, Roth’s meaty and murderous “Thanksgiving” did well for the provocateur. The seasonal holiday slasher, starring Nell Verlaque, Patrick Dempsey, and Addison Rae among others,...

Paul Giamatti has signed on to star in a television adaptation of Eli Roth’s horror franchise “Hostel.”
The project is in development at Fifth Season, the studio behind “Severance,” and does not yet have a distributor attached. Roth is set to direct and write with original franchise producer Chris Briggs. The two of them will also executive produce alongside “Hostel” alum Mike Fleiss.
“Hostel,” which premiered in theaters in 2005 and spawned two sequels, followed American tourists who are convinced by a stranger to travel from Barcelona to Slovakia, where they are then taken captive by an underground organization that kidnaps people for rich clients to torture and kill.
The series is envisioned as a “modern adaptation” and “reinvention” of the low-budget horror franchise, the first installment of which collected $82 million atop a $4.8 million budget. The less lucrative sequel, 2007’s “Hostel: Part II,” still raked in more than $35 million against a $10.2 million budget.

In one of our recent Wtf episodes, we covered the eye-gouging, eastern European-set filthy shenanigans of Eli Roth’s nicely messed up torture porn movie, Hostel. The film helped pave the way for the exploitation horror subgenre to thrive in the early 2000s, and followed a group of American tourists who get a lot more than they bargained for during a trip to the lovely picturesque country of Slovakia. Poor lads. All they wanted was some promiscuous sex with hot European ladies, but they weren’t counting on a shady organization dishing out decapitation and slit throats, as a side dish to the fornication. The movie, according to the tagline, was ‘based upon true events’ and whether or not you believe this claim, it’s nothing if not brutally demented in parts. So, like any other horror movie that manages to whip up a frenzy with critics and fans alike,...

Remakes have always been and will always be a tricky proposition. You could have something as pure and wonderful as 1982’s The Thing, which is objectively better than the revered Howard Hawks and Christian Nyby version, but be trapped in purgatory for way too long before it is decided that its proper and loved. There’s a bunch that are better in different ways or at least thoroughly enjoyable in their own right like John Carpenter’s masterpiece, Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and of course David Cronenberg’s The Fly. While you can argue the horror vs sci fi merits of any of these movies, their quality can’t be disputed. When it comes down to what you can or can’t remake, I think the gloves are off at this point. There’s very few sacred cows left and sometimes a remake can help. Something...

Thanksgiving came early this year for Eli Roth after his new holiday slasher film, Thanksgiving, arrived in cinemas to some of the best reviews of the filmmaker’s career. Well-regarded for groundbreaking 2000s horror films like Cabin Fever (2002) and Hostel (2005), Roth has been trying to make Thanksgiving for nearly as long. Originally conceived as a “joke” trailer to be inserted between Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse double feature in 2007, Thanksgiving has been an idea that never left Roth or his childhood friend Jeff Rendell, the latter of whom co-wrote both the Grindhouse trailer and the actual 2023 slasher that is making a bloody splash today.
When we spoke to Roth about Thanksgiving, we chatted about his and Rendell’s affection for the curious subgenre of holiday-themed slasher movies released in the 1970s and ‘80s, as well as how the director finally figured out the best way to spread the...

In honor of Thanksgiving now playing in theaters, I decided to take a look at the filmography of Eli Roth. After spending a few days watching films like Cabin Fever, Hostel and The Green Inferno, I cried in the shower for about twenty minutes and am vegan now!
In no particular order, here are the most gnarly moments of Roth’s fun career in horror…
“I’m Never Gonna Shave Again” – Cabin Fever (2002)
Without a doubt my favorite Eli Roth film and in my opinion one of the most underrated horror comedies of all time, Cabin Fever features tons of laughs and gross-out scares. One in particular that is hard to forget. Specifically, for those who shave their legs.
After Sweet Lou (the always memorable Joey Kern) decides to reasonably say “To hell with all of you since you Won’T Stop Touching The Bleeding And Infected People” and storm...

It’s nearly time, horror fans! After more than 16 years of anticipation, Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving is set to debut in theaters this weekend, based on his memorable trailer entry that was first featured in Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse double feature back in 2007.
At a recent press day for Thanksgiving, Roth discussed the pressure he felt once he and writer/longtime collaborator Jeff Rendell set out to finally make the feature film version of this idea and how they approached the story and feel of the film. Eli also chatted about how Thanksgiving examines some of the darker elements of the November holiday, working with his cast, and more.
Check out our conversation with Eli Roth below and look for Thanksgiving in theaters everywhere, beginning tonight!

Genre regular Eli Roth has another horror project coming our way – but this one won’t be nearly as brutal or bloody as the likes of Cabin Fever or Hostel. Instead, it’s some “gateway horror” entertainment that comes in the form of an animated series called Fright Krewe. Said to be aimed at “older children”, the first season of Fright Krewe will consist of ten episodes that will be released through both the Hulu and Peacock streaming services. A premiere date has not yet been announced.
The Wrap reports that Roth has teamed up with Dreamworks and author James Frey to bring this series to the screen – and they also point out that Frey is a rather controversial figure. His books A Million Little Pieces and My Friend Leonard were initially marketed as memoirs, but it was soon revealed that large portions of them were either exaggerated or made up.

Patrick Dempsey is in talks with Spyglass to star in “Thanksgiving,” multiple media outlets have reported.
Yes, that’s Eli Roth’s “Thanksgiving,” a violent slasher film based on the fake trailer from Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s double feature “Grindhouse” from 16 years ago.
Chatter has existed about turning the jokey trailer into an actual movie, with Roth having written a screenplay over a dozen years ago. Fantasy became fact when Spyglass stepped in late last year to finance the picture, with shooting to begin in Toronto next month.
While plot details are mostly concealed, it is believed that Dempsey would play a small-town sheriff in Massachusetts who must fend off a holiday-specific murder spree.

Ruggero Deodato, director of the shocking horror movie “Cannibal Holocaust,” which was so controversial it was banned in some countries, died Thursday, the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero reported. He was 83.
The 1980 film “Cannibal Holocaust” is considered one of the goriest movies of all time and cited as the first movie to use found footage. It was banned in several countries due to its graphic depictions of violence, sexual assault and animal cruelty, and it even resulted in Deodato being arrested on obscenity charges. He was accused of murdering several actors on camera to achieve the level of realistic brutality, but he was later cleared and the charges were dropped. He directed other films throughout his career, but “Cannibal Holocaust” was his most famous and reached cult-classic status in the horror community. It also granted him the nickname “Monsieur Cannibal” in France.

Breaking news this Thursday morning as Italian director Ruggero Deodato has reportedly passed away at the age of 83. The news came per The Sun, who sources respected Italian news sources including Il Post and Il Messagero.
Deodato is best known as the filmmaker behind the shocking and controversial Cannibal Holocaust (1980), which inspired several notable filmmakers including Quentin Tarantino and Eli Roth, the latter of which would cast Deodato in his own Hostel: Part II (2007).
Deodato’s contributions are scattered across the board, although he also directed giallo films Body Count (1986) and Phantom of Death (1987), as well as the cult The Barbarians (1987) and House on the Edge of the Park (1980). He recently helmed a segment of Deathcember (2019).
The Sun notes that as a solo director he made more than 30 movies but was most famous for 1980’s pioneering shocker Cannibal Holocaust, which was incredibly controversial for several reasons, including that the “gruesome...

Fifty years ago, two unknown filmmakers named Wes Craven and Sean Cunningham released their low-budget thriller “Last House on the Left.” Or, given its effect on audiences, maybe it’s more accurate to say they unleashed the film. Either way, the horror genre was never the same: Craven, who was making his feature directorial debut with “Last House,” went on to helm several of the smartest, scariest, and most imitated horror films of all time, including “The Hills Have Eyes,” “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” and “Scream.” Cunningham, his producer, would exert an equally pervasive influence on the genre as the director of the original “Friday the 13th.” Ironically, neither filmmaker had a strong desire to make horror movies. “I do not think Sean or Wes had any personal affinity for horror or set out to make an influential mark on the genre,” David Szulkin, author of “Wes Craven’s...

In “Terrifier 2,” a slasher named Art the Clown wears a jester costume with pom-pom buttons and a white bald harlequin head cover, and he’s got licorice-black teeth frozen into a rictus grin (it’s literally a dirty mouth), a hooked nose that looks like something out of an anti-Semitic caricature from the ’30s, a small top hat cocked to the side of his head, and a general attitude of it-only-hurts-you-when-i-laugh blood-soaked dementia. That laugh of Art’s is a real keeper, because it’s silent, like Marcel Marceau’s. He’s so brimming with stylized delight as he chops and saws and skins and dismembers people and throws acid into their faces that he’s like Freddy Krueger channeling Liberace channeling Josef Mengele. When he’s soaked in gore, which is much of the time, the grin shines all the brighter.

While the film has certainly received a lot of grief from a variety of sources—fans, critics, even ratings boards—ever since its release in 2007, you can count this writer amongst the fans of Eli Roth’s Hostel: Part II. There’s no denying that the sequel took the brutality of the original Hostel even further, but what I have always appreciated about both movies is how Roth took on how we examine violence in cinema and made it something that was both thoroughly uncomfortable and endlessly entertaining in the same token, ushering in a new wave of ultra-gore horror, for better or worse.

Eil Roth became a bonafide, 21st Century Master of Horror as a director and producer of enduring and inspirational genre offerings like Hostel, Hostel: Part II, Clown, and The Green Inferno. Most recently, however, he’s been spreading his wings, moving into horror-adjacent territory in order to seduce a wider population of moviegoers. His last film […]

“It” may be a box office smash, but it’s hardly the only horror movie worth talking about these days. Just 17 years in, and the 21st century has already played home to a remarkable number of truly chilling and inventive horror offerings, from a resurgence in J-horror remakes to a continued affection for the classic series of yesteryear, to the massive dominance of the “Conjuring” movie universe and even a “Saw” franchise so dominant that it’s already cycled back into resurrection territory, and that’s just the mainstream stuff.

Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.

★☆☆☆☆ When film fans heard that a remake of Eli Roth's 2002 horror Cabin Fever was on the horizon, it is safe to say that many were baffled. Roth's original horror movie - which sees five young students blow off college work for a weekend of mischief in the woods - became one of the highest grossing films of the year, taking in almost $40 million at the box office. Subsequent hits like Hostel and Hostel: Part II coined Roth as one of the founding members of the Splat Pack - alongside Rob Zombie, James Wan et al - and was praised for his originality and homage of the exploitation sub- horror genre.

Another day, another Dark Souls III video hot off the presses.
Taxing, isn’t it, keeping up with all this information?
Well, stifle those yawns. I have something besides in-game footage to show you. Dark Souls III publisher Bandai Namco tried something fresh, mobilizing famous horror director Eli Roth and animation studio Six Point Harness for a little atmospheric magic.
As Roth’s latest directorial credit, “The Witches is an original story set in the world of Dark Souls III where a lonely world-weary knight finds himself in an incredibly deadly situation when confronted by three witches.”
A redundant title to be certain, but Roth’s knack for “torture porn” ‒ a cinema subgenre that he was credited with reviving ‒ complements the barbaric Dark Souls tone. Discarded corpses lay strewn about, undisturbed; carnivorous rats patrol for their next meal; crows tear the eyes of a living victim free; and a cinder...

Eli Roth, who disappeared from the world of feature film directing after 2007’s Hostel: Part II, now has seen two of his features release in the same year, only mere days apart. The Green Inferno marked Roth’s return to gratuitous gore, which I found to be a (somewhat) gleeful return to form, but I can’t say Knock Knock continues his charge back into the foreground of genre filmmaking. It’s a very different movie, aiming for a psycho-sexual thriller vibe over cannibalistic carnage, but Roth’s signature humor manages to comes through as always. He’s a man who never likes to be taken seriously, but maybe some restraint could have helped this time around, steering lead actor Keanu Reeves away from a special brand of terribleness that only Nic Cage can pull off with ease.

It's a stacked weekend with some notable holdovers and a pair of strong-performing limited releases from last weekend set to expand. Add to that a trio of newcomers including the latest from Nancy Meyers, an animated sequel and the curious decision from Jason Blum's newly formed Bh Tilt to bring the long-delayed cannibal horror feature The Green Inferno to over 1,500 theaters. Let's peel this onion one layer at a time... Likely to easily top the box office is Hotel Transylvania 2, the animated sequel featuring the voice of Adam Sandler as Dracula and recent Emmy host Andy Samberg, along with a fleet of additional, top tier voice talents. The first film hit theaters on the same weekend three years ago, opening with $42.5 million from 3,349 theaters, and Sony has added 404 theaters to that 2012 number in hopes of making sure they top the first feature. In the sequel's favor, the original had strong legs,...

The Green Inferno is a slacktivist’s nightmare filled with cannibal gore, smoked meats, and red-tinted natives, but more importantly, it marks Eli Roth’s return to directing since Hostel: Part II (2007). It’s been too long since we’ve been been treated to the torturous delights that Roth continually cooks up for his always-doomed characters, and while there’s certainly no shortage of bodily dismemberment in The Green Inferno, Roth first asks his audience a question – what issues keep you awake at night? This is, after all, a movie about the best of intentions going Horribly awry, yet Roth first tries to drum up our inner humanitarian by asking what we care about the most. Is it saving an endangered species? Whales, perhaps? Or banning fatty cafeteria lunches? Whatever the case, there’s a momentary sincerity where Roth actually wants to challenge our minds before answering that question himself.

Stephen King is someone I follow on Twitter pretty closely, and it's always interesting to hear his opinions on the latest books, movies and TV shows. His latest recommendation? Eli Roth's forthcoming cannibal film "The Green Inferno," which I have also seen and which will more than likely make chunks rise in the throat of less-durable viewers. It is an extremely brutal and nasty film with a pitch-black sense of humor and some trenchant social commentary to balance out the intensity, but make no mistake: if you thought "Hostel" was tough to watch, "The Green Inferno" is that times two. Here is King's tweet about the film, which hits theaters next Friday: The Green Inferno is like a glorious throwback to the drive-in movies of my youth: bloody, gripping, hard to watch, but you can't look away. — Stephen King (@StephenKing) September 18, 2015 Incidentally, Roth has yet another movie -- the...

The Green Inferno marks Eli Roth’s return to feature directing for the first time since Hostel: Part II. From the look of things, the college students who thought they would visit the Amazon forest to save the natives from global catastrophe are greeted instead with something more along the lines of “Guess who’s coming for dinner.” Needless to say, the natives don’t play too well with visitors who are more accustomed to the relatively more civil social media networking…...

For a brief period in the mid–2000s, Eli Roth was at the forefront of a new generation of genre filmmakers. Instead of breaking out and heading into the studio system, Roth took some acting jobs – most notably one in his pal Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglorious Basterds” – and a six year drought of full-length directed films lasted from 2007’s “Hostel: Part II” until 2013’s Tiff premiere of “The Green Inferno.” With that film finally seeing release this fall and on the heels of his first collaboration with an actual movie star – Keanu Reeves in this year’s “Knock Knock” – Roth is finally getting called up to the big leagues. Variety reports that the horror director has signed up to direct the long-gestating megalodon – prehistoric killer giant shark – movie “Meg” for Warner Bros. Based on Steve Alten’s 1997 novel, the current iteration of the film will follow “two men who band...

With writer/director David Robert Mitchell's Cannes-premiered "It Follows" bringing in over $16 million at the domestic box office on a slim $2 million budget, the theatrical market seems ripe for another arty horror movie hit to arise. So which of this year's festival favorites could follow (no pun intended) in "It Follows'" footsteps? Quentin Tarantino officially begins his tenure as film programmer of the New Beverly Cinema tonight when he re-opens the La institution after a monthlong remodeling. On the docket is a Paul Mazursky double feature of Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice and Blume In Love, which kicks off three months of Tarantino-programmed films, as Deadline reported last month. Many of those films, screened on film either on 16mm or 35mm, will come from Tarantino’s personal vaults. Horror connoisseur Eli Roth proves good intentions don't always lead to good things in the first full trailer for “Green Inferno,” his first directorial effort since 2007's “Hostel: Part II.” The premise is pretty simple: A group of Greenpeace volunteers fly from New York City to the Amazon to save a dying tribe, but after their plane crashes in the jungle, they're taken hostage by the very natives they're trying to protect. See video: Nicolas Cage Flies Through the Rapture in God-Awful ‘Left Behind’ Trailer To make matters worse, their captors are cannibals, and they're hungry for Americans. “Green Inferno” lands in theaters on Sept.
