Michael Mann's big-screen iteration of his hit 1980s television series "Miami Vice" was up against it from the moment it was greenlit. The problem was right there in the title, and what it represented. When people who were old enough to have watched "Miami Vice" during its run from 1984 to 1990 recalled the show, they remembered a series that was Reagan-era style over substance. It was cool during a profoundly uncool era, a byproduct of empty MTV gloss bolstered by ultra-unhip music from Glenn Frey and Phil Collins. Star Don Johnson -- unshaven in a white sportcoat, rocking white Cole Haan kicks without socks -- was the epitome of the series.
The shimmering South Florida surfaces was one reason to watch, but anyone who paid actual attention to the plotlines knew going into Mann's film that the show was always about a rough, thankless, inherently deceitful job and the...

Documentary fans have a lot to be excited about this month on HBO and Max. April begins with the premiere of The Synanon Fix, a docuseries that follows the rise and fall of the cult-like drug rehabilitation program Synanon. The documentary Brandy Hellville and the Cult of Fast Fashion takes a deep-dive into the controversial “one size fits most” clothing brand Brandy Mellville and the impact of fast fashion on the planet.
An American Bombing: The Road to April 19th looks at the surge of political violence and anti-government sentiment that led to the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing, and the effects still felt nearly 30 years later. HBO is also returning with a second part to their popular docuseries The Jinx, with filmmakers continuing their investigation of Robert Durst.

Ramon Rodriguez has joined the NBC legal drama pilot “Prism” in a lead role, Variety has learned.
“Prism” is an exploration of a murder trial in which every episode is told through the perspective of a different key person involved. Each new version of the facts ratchets up the mystery and the suspense, calling into question everything we have seen so far and asking if the right person is on trial. Driven by an ensemble of complicated characters, the show lets the audience ask if truth matters less than who can tell the most compelling story.
Rodriguez will play Eduardo Guaty, described as a hard-hitting prosecutor. He joins previously announced cast members Malin Akerman and Mykelti Williamson.
Rodriguez recently appeared in Season 4 the critically-acclaimed Showtime series “The Affair” and will appear in the show’s upcoming fifth and final season. He also played the villain Bakuto in the Marvel-...

Desperate parents start an underground casino to pay their daughter’s college tuition, descending into a life of crime and violence that rips the veneer of respectability off the upscale McMansion lifestyles of them and their neighbors.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released a second trailer for the upcoming drama The Accountant.
Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) is a math savant with more affinity for numbers than people. Behind the cover of a small-town Cpa office, he works as a freelance accountant for some of the world’s most dangerous criminal organizations.
With the Treasury Department’s Crime Enforcement Division, run by Ray King (J.K. Simmons), starting to close in, Christian takes on a legitimate client: a state-of-the-art robotics company where an accounting clerk (Anna Kendrick) has discovered a discrepancy involving millions of dollars. But as Christian uncooks the books and gets closer to the truth, it is the body count that starts to rise.
The film also stars Jon Bernthal (“Fury,” “The Wolf of Wall Street”), Jean Smart (TV’s “Fargo,” “24”), and Cynthia Addai-Robinson (“Star Trek: Into Darkness”), with Jeffrey Tambor (TV’s “Transparent,” “The Hangover” films...

To say that "Jane Got A Gun" had issues is an understatement. Originally set to be directed by Lynne Ramsay, the filmmaker abruptly left the movie after clashing with producers literally moments before cameras were set to roll, thus throwing the Natalie Portman-starring western into chaos. Gavin O'Connor ("Warrior," "Pride And Glory") quickly stepped in to replace Ramsay and keep the movie going, while Joel Edgerton lent a hand in rewriting the script and swapped roles, going from playing the villain (which went to Ewan McGregor), to taking the role of the hero. And even after production was complete, the picture took a long time to reach screens, finally arriving in January, where it flopped. And when Jessica Kiang sat down with Edgerton last month at the Berlin Film Festival, where he was on hand to promote the upcoming "Midnight Special," the conversation turned toward "Jane Got A Gun,...

So, are we experiencing a little Western renaissance? This fall we’ve already got “Bone Tomahawk,” “The Hateful Eight” and “The Revenant” riding over the horizon, and not far behind is “Jane Got A Gun.” Natalie Portman’s troubled western has already been released in France, but the rest of the world is waiting, and a new trailer has arrived for the picture's UK bow. Joel Edgerton, Ewan McGregor, Noah Emmerich, Rodrigo Santoro and Boyd Holbrook join Portman in the tale of a woman (Portman) who asks her ex-lover (Edgerton) for help in order to save her outlaw husband (Emmerich) from a gang out to kill him. But things aren’t as simple as they seem. The Gavin O' Connor ("Warrior," "Pride And Glory") directed movie is still without a firm U.S. release date, but The Weinstein Company will get into cinemas sometime in 2016. Watch below. The Accountant sounds like an extremely stupid movie to me. Ben Affleck will play a man who is an accountant by day and an assassin by night. I hope the film has a sense of humor about itself, but director Gavin O'Connor's track record (Warrior, Pride and Glory) does not suggest it will. However, this piece of casting news gives me more hope on what the film will be. Anna Kendrick and J.K. Simmons are doing some extremely fine work as of late. Simmons is looking at an Oscar nomination for Whiplash, which he very much deserves for that performance. Kendrick just gave what I think is the best performance of her career thus far in The Last 5 Years (read my review here) and will next be seen in another musical adaptation this Christmas with Into the Woods. The two are operating at high levels and are some...

The son of Oscar winner Ben Kingsley will play an experienced fighter pilot who is in command of Britain’s first manned mission to space at the height of the Cold War. He ends alone in space with a malfunctioning capsule, limited contact with the UK, unusual communication with the U.S. and some unorthodox communication with Soviet Russia. The cast also includes Lisa Greenwood and Joseph Baird. The film is produced by Paul D. Forrest and executive produced by Mohammed Patel, Omar Qamar, Stuart Wilkins and Waseem Zaman. Kingsley’s credits include Hugo, Stonehurst Asylum and TV’s The Borgias and Endeavour. He is repped by Independent Talent Group.

Doubles down on the first film’s angry approach to class, inequality, and violence, and once again reflects an image of America that is ugly but only slightly distorted. I’m “biast” (pro): loved the first film
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Last year, The Purge astonished me with one of the most daring speculative conceits to come out of a Hollywood studio in maybe forever, or certainly since the dystopic sci-fi of the 1970s. In a near-future America under what appears to be a religious dictatorship called the New Founding Fathers, all crime including murder is permitted — nay, encouraged — one night a year for a 12-hour period called the Purge. Vague religious justifications about “cleansing” smash up against the American “right” to be armed to the teeth and defend oneself against all threats, perceived or actual, with hints...

This weekend, moviegoers will return for more madness with "The Purge: Anarchy," the sequel to last summer's horror hit "The Purge." The violent and extreme future world of the film, where crime reigns free for 24 hours once a year, is a bit different from other traditional horror films, in that it isn't the supernatural that invokes fear, but humanity's darkest desires. And helping to convey that tone is composer Nathan Whitehead, who has scored both films in the franchise. Starting his career at a sound design company, and working nights and weekends on his own material, Whitehead's persistence eventually paid off, as he contributed music and arrangements to variety of projects including "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," "Pride and Glory," "Your Highness" and more, along with video game work as well. But it's "The Purge" films where Whitehead is really establishing his footprint and musical voice, and you can...

One doesn’t have to be an analyst or expert in all things cinema to note the decline of certain genres and niches within the film-making machine. While comic-book movies and superhero franchises have risen to soaring heights over the last fifteen years, we have seen a dramatic drop in other, classic outputs, seemingly to make way. A perfect example of this would be the procedural crime thriller, tales of murder investigation and corruption, a hallmark of hard boiled fiction from the 1970′s onwards that by now have tailed off. It says a lot that the most recent archetypal release from said field was last year’s Broken City, a box office and critical failure from highly rated scribe Stephen Knight. A production line that once gave us the likes of Chinatown, Serpico and Seven is now decrepit and seemingly unfit for purpose.

Fans of 2013's "The Purge" should ready themselves with round two from "The Purge: Anarchy," to the strains of the same composer from the first scary flick. Nathan Whitehead returned to score the sequel, and HitFix today exclusively reveals the first piece to arrive from the soundtrack: the ominously titled "Don't Do This." Check out the song below. “Scoring ‘The Purge: Anarchy’ was thrilling,” Whitehead said of the new music. “Everything is bigger this time; the action, drama and tension all take place on a much larger scale. I worked hard to incorporate this larger scope in the music, and we went much further combining aggressive electronics and textures with a live orchestra. It was such a satisfying challenge, and I hope my score delivers the intense experience that moviegoers are looking forward to having.” The original soundtrack will be be released on July 15 via Back Lot Music, while the...

For his next movie to follow Edge Of Tomorrow, Doug Liman is already in active development on the Tom Clancy videogame adaptation Splinter Cell, which has Tom Hardy attached to star. That's only one of several projects that Liman has on the boil, however, and he may just have added another to the list. With the World Cup in full swing, it seems appropriate that he's in talks to direct Victory, a remake of the WWII football favourite Escape To Victory. The original film, made in 1981, involves a group of POWs using a propaganda footie match with their German captors as an escape opportunity, with some help from the French Resistance tunnelling in from the sewers outside the Paris ground. John Huston directed, and the film is much loved and remembered for its unusual onscreen mix of actors and professional footballers: Michael Caine and Sylvester Stallone co-star with Bobby Moore and Pele.

As his career has pressed forward, director Gavin O'Connor's film titles have gotten progressively blunter: "Pride And Glory," "Warrior" and his forthcoming, "Jane Got A Gun." And now he's got another that makes no bones about the subject and thematic elements. The director has signed up to helm "Massacre In The Himalayas," which is exactly what it sounds like. The film will be based on Men's Journal article (read it here) by Freddie Wilkinson, that tells the true story of a dozen mountain climbers, trying to reach the summit of K2, who are attacked and eventually killed by Pakistani terrorists. Ten were killed, with one surviving by jumping off a cliff... And while it's a great true story, Variety notes it will be fictionalized, but let's hope they don't get too creative with the adaptation. No word yet on whether or not this will be the filmmaker's next effort,...

You may find this hard to believe, but there are in fact a few films opening in 2014 that are not sequels, not remakes, not reboots, and not based on stage shows, the Bible (there’s more than one of these coming our way), young-adult novels, comic books, cartoons, or — someone make it stop — toy lines. Good luck finding anything currently scheduled for wide release in June or December that’s actually original, but here’s what you might want to keep an eye out for during the rest of the year. (Release dates are for North America.)

We could all use a little more Edward Norton in our lives.
Though the Fight Club star has had a few particularly zeitgeisty moments (see 1996, which brought us Norton’s Primal Fear/Larry Flynt/Everyone Says I Love You trifecta, or 2002, when he had big roles in four movies… one of which, granted, was Death to Smoochy), he generally keeps a pretty low profile by appearing in just a few carefully chosen films each year. This, plus Norton’s closely guarded personal life, mean that he’s sort of impossible to get sick of — and makes his first time hosting...

In case you’re still in denial that there’s a fourth Jurassic Park film on the way, here’s some casting news to really drive the point home. This movie is happening. And “the kid from Iron Man 3″ is going to be in it.
Deadline is reporting that Ty Simpkins has been cast as a lead in “Jurassic World.” Simpkins actually has quite a resume. Aside from IM3, the 12 year old has also appeared in “War of The Worlds,” ” Revolutionary Road,” “Little Children,” “Pride and Glory,” and “Insidious.” If the murmurs are true, he’ll soon be joined in the “Jurassic World” cast by Bryce Dallas Howard and possibly Jake Johnson (New Girl).
“Jurassic World” will be coming your way during the stacked Summer of 2015, and will be directed by Colin Trevorrow- who also co-wrote the script with Derek Connolly after winning the job with his work on “Safety Not Guaranteed.

Exclusive: We got another lead casting in Jurassic World, the Colin Trevorrow-directed sequel that will be shot in 3D and which Universal will release in June 12, 2015. I keep hearing that New Girl and Drinking Buddies star Jake Johnson is in the mix, but the studio won’t confirm him. I don’t think they confirmed Bryce Dallas Howard, who has also been in talks for a role. I’m hearing that 12-year old Ty Simpkins, fresh from Iron Man 3, has booked a lead in Jurassic World. Despite the fact I probably have food in the freezer older than this young actor, Simpkins has worked before with producer Steven Spielberg, who is producing with Frank Marshall and Pat Crowley. Simpkins made his feature debut in the Spielberg-directed War Of The Worlds, opposite Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning. Last year, Simpkins starred in the genre smash Insidious, and reprises in the sequel.

The new Clive Owen vehicle, Blood Ties, looks to pick up where Pride and Glory and We Own the Night left off. Essentially, this crime drama is set to follow the lives of two brothers on opposite sides of the law; one being a cop, and the other a former mobster who was recently released from prison, on top of several disparate individuals whose lives are all seemingly interconnected to the New York City underworld in the 1970s.

Meanwhile, Forbes named Miss Stewart to their Celebrity 100 List as the fourth most powerful actress in Tinseltown. Kudos!
