In 1961, a key architect of the Holocaust, Adolf Eichmann, was tried in Israel and sentenced to death. An odd thing happened. Officials didn’t want to bury him and risk creating a shrine, so they decided on cremation. That is strictly against the Jewish religion and there were no crematoria in the country.
So Shlomi Zebco (played by Tzahi Grad), a former Israeli paramilitary soldier who owns a commercial oven factory, was asked by the government to make one big enough to incinerate Hitler’s former top lieutenant, handing him a manual with instructions – in German. Zebco’s assistant realized with horror the model was used in Nazi death camps.
The story is told from three points of view: of a 13-year-old Jewish Libyan boy who is kicked out of school, finds a job at the factory and helps build the oven; Eichmann’s guard, a Moroccan Jew tasked with...

Simon Pegg is best known for his starring roles in the spoof films of the Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy, but the actor has appeared in plenty of other great movies (and some not-so-great ones). Pegg first rose to prominence as the co-creator and star of the Channel 4 sitcom Spaced. He reunited with director Edgar Wright, co-star Nick Frost, and a handful of other cast members from Spaced for the Cornetto movies that launched him to stardom: zombie-infested romcom Shaun of the Dead, “buddy cop” slasher Hot Fuzz, and body-snatching sci-fi adventure The World’s End.
Since the Cornetto movies made Pegg a recognizable star, he’s acted in such lucrative blockbuster franchises as Ice Age, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible. He’s acted alongside A-list stars like Tom Cruise, Chris Pine, and Thandiwe Newton and worked with such legendary directors as Steven Spielberg, John Landis, and J.J. Abrams. Some of...

Veteran producer Joel Silver (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey’s Team Downey and Amazon Studios are partnering to develop a series of feature film and television projects based on Donald E. Westlake’s series of highly popular Parker crime fiction novels, written under the pseudonym Richard Stark.
The first project emerging from the deal will be the film Play Dirty, in which Downey Jr. (Marvel’s Avengers franchise) is set to star as Parker, a professional thief who approaches his job with a straightforward, no-nonsense work ethic. He’s a craftsman. He’s brutal, brilliant. He’s also deadly. He’s whatever it takes to get the money and get away clean. The Parker character was first introduced in 1962’s The Hunter from Pocket Books and featured in 23 other titles from Westlake, subsequently serving as the basis for such films as Parker with Jason Statham,...

I had the wrong idea about this book. I feel like I say that a lot in this blog, but why not say it if it’s true? We all come into new experiences with expectations and ideas, and we’re all wrong a lot of the time. There’s no shame in saying so.
I expected Good Night, Hem to be a standalone graphic novel about Ernest Hemingway. Since it’s by the Norwegian cartoonist Jason, I thought there might be a genre element of some kind, or that it might be told slyly in some other way: I didn’t expect a straightforward biographical story.
I wasn’t far wrong, but I’d forgotten that Jason had already written about Hemingway and his Paris circle of the 1920s in The Left Bank Gang – well, sort-of, since those characters had the names of the Lost Generation circle but were...

The weird, wonderful and sometimes sad world of actors who make a living as lookalikes of Bollywood superstars is the subject of Geetika Narang Abbasi’s documentary “Urf,” world premiering in the Cinema Regained strand of the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
The actors are known by the names of the stars they portray, with the prefix Jr. – short for Junior. “Urf,” which translates as also known as or alias, follows several lookalikes, but mainly focuses on Kishore Bhanushali a.k.a. Jr. Dev Anand, Firoz Khan a.k.a. Jr. Amitabh Bachchan, and Prashant Walde, a.k.a. Jr. Shah Rukh Khan.
“I was very intrigued by the whole phenomenon of imitation, of assuming a star’s personality and being a ‘reflected’ star. Soon I realized how it is also unique to our films – there have been mainstream films with lookalikes in the lead and then, of course, they feature...

One of the stars of Guillermo del Toro’s new noir, he has been a captivating character actor for 40 years, but is rarely put up before the press. We find out why …
Fugitives facing the firing squad have looked more relaxed than David Strathairn does right now. One of the most perspicacious character actors of the past 40 years, he has been exceptional so often on screen that any attempt to list the highlights runs the risk of simply transcribing his IMDb page: Nomadland, LA Confidential, The River Wild, Sneakers, a batch of rigorous dramas by his longtime friend John Sayles (including Matewan and Limbo), a fling with Carmela on The Sopranos, a career-best performance as a predatory teacher in the indie gem Blue Car, and an Oscar nomination for Good Night, and Good Luck. Training Day, Iron Man, The Master, Munich, Ford v Ferrari, The Bling Ring, Nightcrawler, Ray, Birds of Prey, You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, Syriana, The Conjuring 2––meet Michael Bauman, the man who’s lit it all. That’s not even a quarter of the credits to his name, almost all of which, since 1994, list him as gaffer or chief lighting technician. Different productions have different titles, but it’s essentially the same job: he’s in charge of light. Where it goes in or out of frame, how it’s sourced, how it plays on screen, the strength, the tone, the hue, the shadow, all of it. In a medium created to capture light, that’s a vital role. He characterizes frames through details that guide our viewing experience, creating thematic throughlines with color, or heightening specific moments with dynamic shading, or falsifying daylight, or something else we take for granted.

Where to Watch ‘The Fungies!’: HBO Max
It’s not easy to describe what exactly the Fungies are. The theme song for the animated HBO Max Original presents them as “prehistoric fungi,” though de facto main character Seth (voiced by Harry Teitelman) is basically shaded like a tomato and the inhabitants of bustling Fungietown live in giant mushroom buildings, so everything in this world follows a kind of internal children’s-show logic. Whatever adjectives you choose to use, that character design serves as the first and main draw of “The Fungies!”
Most of the creatures of “The Fungies!” function somewhere between Potato Head, putty, and whatever’s in a lava lamp. Normal day-to-day life involves detaching and rearranging limbs, getting smushed together as component parts of giant innovative apparatuses, and in the case of Seth’s siblings The Twins, existing as modular halves of a single whole.

"Let us say a prayer that this piece of land, small as it may be, can be more than a symbol." Today's trailer is for an indie sci-fi/post apocalyptic film that premiered at Sundance to rather dismal buzz. It's the second feature from Jake Paltrow, younger brother of Gwyneth Paltrow, whose debut was The Good Night from 2007. This one, titled the Young Ones, is another genre-mixer set in the future, but with the tone and style of a Dust Bowl western. Kodi Smit-McPhee stars as the nomad son of Michael Shannon, and Nicholas Hoult actually plays a villain, with Elle Fanning his girlfriend. These first trailers are early promos that may not stay online, but as a first glimpse I'm intrigued to see how this looks. If you're curious, take a look. Watch the first few promo trailers for Jake Paltrow's Young Ones below, found via The Playlist:...

Isn’t this the week that indie filmmakers take the stage in Park City? Hours after Christopher Nolan came to accept Slamdance’s Founder’s Award, I’m told Steven Spielberg just sat down at the Eccles Theater for the premiere of Young Ones, the latest film written and directed by Jake Paltrow. I’m told this is Spielberg’s second trip to Sundance, and the first one was to see The Good Night, also directed by Paltrow. What gives? Spielberg is Paltrow’s godfather and obviously a big fan of the helmer’s work. Young Ones, an acquisition title, is described as a futuristic Western-style tale that takes place in a world with a scarcity of water. A 14-year-old boy is confronted with his primal instincts when he finds out his friendly brother-in-law murdered his father. The film stars Michael Shannon, Nicholas Hoult, Elle Fanning, and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

Young Ones
Written and directed by Jake Paltrow
USA, 2014
It’s always a mix of delight, discomfort, and teeth-grinding tension when Michael Shannon (Bug, Take Shelter, The Iceman) takes center stage. His exacting performances often subtly build upon instability and transfix the audience as a countdown to imminent emotional combustion begins. This sci-fi drama by Jake Paltrow (The Good Night) is set to showcase Shannon and rely on his strong air of deeply held convictions to boldly deliver the film’s gritty premise of humanity’s struggle in a future deprived of water. The rest of the acting ensemble are coming of age as promising talents that may complement Shannon’s gravitas. Elle Fanning shined in Ginger & Rosa while...

The Sundance Film Festival made their final feature film line-ups with the Premieres category announcements. Sixteen films with huge name talent, returnee filmmakers and plenty of buyer interest/and future all night wheeling, and dealing.
After breaking out in Park City with The Guard, John Michael McDonagh returns (alongside actor Brendan Gleeson) the much anticipated Calvary. Mike Cahill (alongside actress Brit Marling) returns with more sci-fi terrain with, I Origins. Jake Paltrow who managed to sink instead of swim with The Good Night, was again surfaces with Young Ones. And this was unexpected, but Jordan Vogt-Roberts makes it back to back years with Toy’s House (The Kings of Summer) re-teams with Nick Offerman for Nick Offerman: American Ham (which is more concert-comedy film than narrative feature).

Jake Paltrow’s (The Good Night, NYPD Blue, great DNA) newest project, Young Ones, is now firmly on our radar.
The film has cast Elle Fanning (Super 8), Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road, Let Me In), Nicholas Hoult (Jack The Giant Slayer, Warm Bodies, X-men: First Class, About A Boy), and Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire, Take Shelter, Man Of Steel). All we know about the plot so far is that it’s a sci-fi thriller in a future where water is scarce and is the world’s most valuable resource. Violence ensues.

It's been over a year since we heard anything about the indie sci-fi film called Young Ones being written and directed by Jake Paltrow, brother of actress Gwyneth Paltrow, who directed The Good Night in 2007. The story is set in a future were water has become a rare and precious resource, and violence has erupted in this drastically different society. Now Variety has word that Nicholas Hoult, Michael Shannon and Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In) have all joined the cast along with once attached Elle Fanning who has been confirmed for a role in the film looking to start production in the South African desert next month. In the story, a teenage cowboy is grieving over the death of his father when he discovers that his fathers' killer has moved in with his sister, and the introduction of some new technology threatens to claim more lives than the water shortage.

There's an interesting sounding new sci-fi thriller that's going to be made called Young Ones. The story is set in a violent future where water has become scarce, and it's the single most precious resource.
What really got me interested in the film, though, is the cast. Variety reports that Elle Fanning (Super 8), Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodies), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Paranorman) and Michael Shannon (Man of Steel) have joined the film, which is being developed by writer and director Jake Paltrow (The Good Night).
The movie is already shooting in the South African desert. I'm looking forward to seeing what this movie turns out to be. ...

Elle Fanning (Super 8), Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodies), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In) and Michael Shannon (Take Shelter) have all signed up for Jake Paltrow’s long-awaited dystopian thriller Young Ones. The lesser-known sibling, Paltrow (The Good Night) will not only direct his sophomore effort, but is also writing the screenplay, which centers on a 14-year-old boy forced to use his wits to survive and ‘is set in a violent near-future where water has become the most precious—and fastest-dwindling—resource on the planet.’ Since the lead in a neo-realistic dystopian film is a 14-year-old, it can be assumed that Smit-McPhee is playing the main character. Nicholas Hoult will be spotty poet Rik and Michael Shannon the mysteriously cool Mike in the student comedy drama... No, sorry, that's not true. The Young Ones heading into production in this case is a futuristic thriller directed by Jake Paltrow, and nothing to do with the old Rik Mayall comedy show. Hoult and Shannon have just come aboard though, along with Elle Fanning (Super 8, We Bought a Zoo) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In, The Road). It's sounding as if Smit-McPhee has the nominal lead, since the film centers on a 14-year-old boy fighting to survive through wit and guile in a violent nea- future where water has become the most precious resource (cough-Tank Girl-cough). The roles for the other three remain unclear for now.Paltrow got his start directing for television, on the likes of NYPD Blue. His first feature was 2007's dark comedy The Good Night,...

Jake Paltrow isn.t exactly what you.d call the most prolific director, having not helmed anything since 2007.s middling dream lover comedy The Good Night, which starred older sister Gwyneth. His sophomore effort, at least on paper, sounds exactly like a sophomore effort, but a bunch of big names just came raining down on the project. The water reference will make sense in a minute. Variety reports that Michael Shannon, Nicholas Hoult, Elle Fanning and Kodi Smit-McPhee have all signed up for Paltrow.s sci-fi thriller Young Ones, adding quite a bit of legitimacy to the film. Hoult has made his splash from one side of the pond to the next, with Warm Bodies performing better than expected. Shannon has been damned near perfect in everything he stars in, more recently in Boardwalk Empire and Premium Rush. The younger Fanning sister has already shown deft maturity as an actress...

Certainly less well-known that his much more famous sister and parents, Jake Paltrow has nonetheless been quietly making his own mark. In 2007 he delivered his feature debut "The Good Night," which admittedly didn't make much of a splash. But for his sophomore effort, he's certainly raising his game. Nicholas Hoult, Michael Shannon, Elle Fanning and Kodi Smit-McPhee are set to star in "Young Ones," a thriller that will not only be directed by Paltrow, but he wrote the script too. The seemingly issue-based sci-fi flick takes place in the near future when water has become a precious resource, and it centers on a 14-year-old who must "use his wits to survive." Survive what exactly isn't spelled out in Variety's report, but you already had us at Shannon and Fanning in the same movie, so we're already there. And we have to applaud everyone involved for keeping it under wraps, because...

From Dali to Nolan, dreams have always been a large go-to story device and inspiration for filmmakers since the creation of the film camera. The, still relatively unknown, art of lucid dreaming (the ability to consciously control the dream state) however, has still only been approached by few iconic auteurs. This list aims to expose those movies that have challenged this often philosophical theme and how some of them have changed, and even made, cinematic history:
(Note: The films in this list have been chosen as they feature the ideas and/or discuss lucid dreaming directly in the narrative – be warned, there be spoilers ahead.).

Featuring a fascinating, international ensemble cast from Jarvis Cocker to Martin Freeman to Penélope Cruz via Danny DeVito and [a rather obscure cameo from] Michael Gambon – this independent film from “younger brother” Jake Paltrow explores the often volatile world of middle-age frustration and human relationships.

I love some good sci-fi, as always. Found at Afm by Collider is a sales banner for an indie sci-fi film called Young Ones being written/directed by Jake Paltrow, brother of Gwyneth, who directed The Good Night in 2007. The art features what looks like a young boy—but might be a girl, as the latest casting updated on IONCinema as of March this year, had Elle Fanning attached, but maybe this is just temporary promo art. The tagline says "Not all Children have a Childhood", and there's a floating robot that resembles the Hoth probe droid from Empire Strikes Back, if it isn't just a direct lift. It's just early art, but check it out anyway. Click below to be taken back to Collider, where they've got some awesome Afm coverage. Teen slacker, George, thinks he's got it all figured out until he meets "doe-eyed" Sally in "The Art Of Getting By" -- and cue eclectic indie soundtrack. Curiously, this one features a roster of bands who seem like they are years off the apparent target demographic's playlists.
