This was one very well produced, well written, thoughtful, intriguing, insightful, amusing, and, ultimately sophisticated, but, romantic, and, moving, bittersweet comedy, or "dramedy", always extremely poignantly and cleverly set in some of the most elegant interiors, either in gorgeous homes with swimming pools, and, fountains, or in Historical apartments, preciously decorated with very visibly costly Arts, and, antiques, while, on the other hand, making of crucial it spots, the absolutely gorgeously photographed views, back drop's, and, moods for this story so centered at the core of the Holy City of Rome! The story tells, with lightness, but, always caring with a delicate, natural grace, the misadventures of a group of highly romantic, but, also always extremely resourceful, as well, and, fun, prominent, wealthy, (but, almost in disguise), and, naturally, cosmopolitan, citizens of the eternal City: they always appear so absolutely engaged, and, engaging, with their "never a dull moment" type of lives, while, never working real jobs, but, living heartily some sort of nostalgic return to "La Dolce Vita", with even, all of those romantic affairs, that can be complex and intricate, somewhat even curiously jaded, some, becoming later, at times, heart breaking, but, with the clear difference of tone, that immediately, sets us miles away from the darkness and delusions of the celebrated Fellini's masterpiece, establishing instead a place, where, everyone is always a lot merrier, never too pensive, nor corroded by the situations, in fact, always, almost, "magically" all managing to progress, with an everlasting, extremely pleasant tempo, that never presents us with too many sorrows, at the end! This is clearly that kind of product that may be remembering us vaguely (in some settings, and, situations) of classic's, such as, "Three Coins in the Fountain", and, other films, just in fact taking place in the heart of Rome, and, where, no matter what, every character involved is bringing in a story and a motive, and, we have quite a few here, including, madly in love teen agers, dissatisfied wives always assisted and advised by sexy, wonderfully dressed girl friends, who happen to be lovers with another older friend, who's not by chance married to a mysterious, but, finally, very benign, and, never even a tiny tad bitter rich Countess, who then happens to be even the grandmother (ah the faith, in the eternal City!) of one of the teens, while, like being, in some sort of much more brilliant than average Merry-Go-Round, and, somewhat of a way more delicate, sunnier Roman version of "La Ronde": everyone, at the end, comes out of it, as elegant as he or she had begun the round, but, always, at least, sweeter, and, a little more ironic, more compassionate, and, why not, even clever! Nothing really ground breaking or new, let's be honest, but, more simply, a very solid, old fashioned product, extremely well crafted, especially excelling in the departments related to cinematography, costumes, production design, and, editing, that are all extremely elevated, and, all coming from those famed, and, unforgettable, superior "Old School" Italian professional standards of filmmaking, then presenting Italian films, that were still marketable everywhere in the World! And, even though, here, the extremely careful direction, still doesn't ever truly shine, there is, on the other hand, a very rich, sublime cast, that would revive anyone, at any hour of the day, or of the night, and, in any season of the year, making of this light movie a perfectly winning charmer! Everyone in the cast is again just truly in a state of grace, and, for who's familiar with European actors from the time, this is actually a stellar cast, but, interestingly so, it's never one of those heavy casting's either, like in other co-productions, from the same time, just ending always to be like, and, at their best, like some luxurious mix, and, not even believable combination, of International popular faces, and, names, just to play with fair game to all marketability issues, simply requested by the numerous intercontinental sales, but, sadly, quite often, becoming more like a display of bragging stars just on set, working for big checks, and, painfully, all looking out of place! At the contrary, here, the real surprise is just that we truly have got all the right, and, even the most convincing actors, at their very best, or, at least, during one of their very happiest moments, and, all of them, so visibly, in top professional, and, physical shape: everyone is in fact here brilliantly chosen to actually enrich the story, and, to portray with great, and, participant sensibility, their own meaty roles, each one of them, always being key, to at least, one or more, of the most important tassels, making of this sizzling ensemble piece, truly a brilliant experience, always, conveying a suave, but, never less than moral, lesson learned, and, finally, just to conclude, with a true happy note, bringing us a couple of hours really well spent, and, truly always never less than extremely engaging, engrossing, and, for sure, very entertaining.
