The assistant producer of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots has hinted that there may be more to come in the bestselling series. Ryan Payton said that while the latest game is the end of the road for leading character Solid Snake, much of the press has misunderstood that it is also the final Metal Gear game. He told 1Up: "There are some misunderstandings that this is the final Metal Gear game. But it's really the final chapter of the Solid Snake story." The acclaimed Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures is back at the top of the latest all-formats games chart. Inspired by the first three movies from the Indiana Jones franchise, the game took the number one spot despite sales falling by some 29%. Last week's top-selling game Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots saw sales fall by 59%, sending the game down to number two after spending just one week at the top. Atari's highly-publicised multi-format release Alone In The Dark made its debut at number three, while Take 2's Top Spin 3 just missed out on the top ten, entering the charts at 12. Metal Gear Solid is gaming's greatest contradiction: Each episode wraps superbly disciplined gameplay in the medium's most indulgent storyline. Creator and director Hideo Kojima engenders a bizarre disconnect between narrative cinematics and actual gameplay—levels can feel like mere bridges between operatic story arcs. Strip away the dross, however, and the stealth-based game within is as compelling as the very best the medium has to offer. Consider the story almost a total teardown. In the fourth and (presumably) final chapter, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots, Solid Snake has to defeat human war machines and thwart the biggest global military conspiracy William Gibson never dreamed of. Embedded are ruminations on self-sustaining war economies, privatized military forces, and post-traumatic stress disorder. But pesky contradictions persist.
