If Emily Blunt's track record is anything to go by, the British star excels at playing assistants to eccentric bosses. She stole scenes from Anne Hathaway as assistant to Meryl Streep in “The Devil Wears Prada,” charmed as a reluctant publicist to a zany John Malkovich in “The Great Buck Howard” and took crap from Miss Piggy in “The Muppets.” In her latest film, “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen,” Blunt plays Harriet, assistant to a sheik who wants to bring salmon fishing to the desert. In the romantic comedy, directed by Lasse Hallstrom (“Chocolat”) and penned by Simon Beaufoy ("Slumdog Millionaire"), Harriet is paired with Britain’s leading fisheries expert, Fred (Ewan McGregor), to make the sheik’s dream a reality. Complications ensue when Fred, a married man, falls for Harriet. Blunt sat down with Indiewire during a short stop in Manhattan to talk about working with her co-star,...

Park City - Over the past few years, there have been an increasing number of pictures that were questionable inclusions to Sundance's premieres slate. A few them were actually good films ("The Company Men," "Smart People," "Cedar Rapids," ), but many were star-filled pseudo indies seemingly intended to satisfy sponsor attendees and the affluent contributors looking for a little bit of Hollywood during their Park City festival vacation ("The Great Buck Howard," "Brooklyn's Finest," "Motherhood," "The Butterfly Effect," "My Idiot Brother" and "The Son of No One" come to mind). A good deal of these films would have been more appropriate at...

No. Just... no. I didn’t totally hate the first two Alvin and the Chipmunk movies, but even the modicum of charm and humor they managed to scare up is entirely missing here. It starts out as not so much a movie as a commercial for Carnival Cruise Lines -- which perhaps shouldn’t be a surprising turn for a strictly cash-in threequel -- as Dave Seville (Jason Lee: Cop Out) takes his three chipmunk children/musical talent clients on vacation along with their little Chipette girlfriends... except the rat triplets haven’t even hooked up yet, so should we consider Dave a pimp? And, anyway, can you bring rats on a cruise ship? Hey, actually, that could be a funny movie, if all six chipmunks got a cultural wakeup call from the shipboard rats who could tell them what life was really like down on the scavenger level. Hey,...

Some of you might know Colin Hanks as the son of actor Tom Hanks, but most of you probably know the young actor from his roles in such films as Orange County, Peter Jackson's King Kong, The Great Buck Howard, Oliver Stone's W., Band of Brothers and tv shows like Roswell and The Good Guys. I personally loved Colin's fantastic stint as Father John Gill on Mad Men and am very much looking forward to seeing him on the next season of Dexter. Recently, Colin has been working hard on an interesting documentary film, All Things Must Pass: The Rise and Fall of Tower Records. Colin hopes to raise $50,000 by July 15th to help finish production of the film. Hanks has set up a Kickstarter page [1] to do it. For your help, Colin is offering a variety of incentive gifts: starting at a mere $5 for a “Thank You” mention in the film's credits,...

It can't be easy being the son of Tom Hanks, just ask this guy. But for Colin Hanks, he's done a pretty solid job so far of moving up the ranks of Hollywood. Sure, he teamed with Papa Hanks for "The Great Buck Howard," but no one saw that movie anyway, and he's been quietly amassing screen credits (and when he's not in meetings, he's been hitting Twitter pretty hard) featuring most prominently in "Orange County" and "King Kong." But 2011 seems to be the year we'll he'll finally start getting a much higher profile. He recently scored a prominent,…...

Will and Jaden Smith are already on pace to become the biggest father-son box-office draw in history, and now that they’re set to reunite for M. Night Shyamalan’s futuristic sci-fi film, it’s not ridiculous to think that the superstar duo could potentially star in their own buddy-movie franchise. We already know they have great chemistry, from their heartfelt turns in 2006′s The Pursuit of Happyness.
Which isn’t always the case, by the way, when dads and sons try to translate their relationship to the screen. Maybe they’re trying too hard, or maybe it’s difficult...

Following in his father George's footsteps, director Cameron Romero is a filmmaker with something to say; and in the new trailer for his latest film, Radical, that he sent exclusively our way, his message is loud and frighteningly clear.
Radical centers on the story of three members of the American press being held captive by a calculating terrorist who taunts the Us government with his arrogance and technological savvy.
The isolation piece stars Tom Sizemore (Saving Private Ryan, Heat), Ford Austin (Dahmer vs. Gacy, The Auctioneers), Josh Carmichael, Shahe Assilian and Bj Hendricks (The Great Buck Howard, Staunton Hill) and marks a reunion for many cast members who have worked with Romero in the past.

HollywoodNews.com: Paramount released its first non-Dreamworks cartoon in nearly five years this weekend. And indeed, the number one film by a long shot was Gore Verbinski’s Rango (teaser). The critically-acclaimed and nearly-existential Johnny Depp vehicle grossed $38 million over the three-day weekend. That’s the biggest opening for a Paramount animated feature not from Dreamworks, although it’s slightly behind in attendance compared to the $32 million opening of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie back in November of 2004. Paramount’s animated fare has been exclusively Dreamworks since the August 2006 release of Barnyard: The Original Party Animals. Since they acquired Dreamworks in early 2006, they’ve basically been just releasing the Katzenberg cartoons. But prior to that, they actually had a good thing going with Nickelodeon, although they have released a few Nickelodeon live-action co-ventures over the last few years (Charlotte’s Web, Hotel For Dogs, etc). Sean McGinly's feature directing debut The Great Buck Howard was about a man a bit past his prime in his chosen profession (magic) but still doggedly pursuing his trade. For his next act, McGinly will be telling a similar story, just with a bit of grand larceny thrown in. According to Variety he'll be adapting and directing The Old Man and the Gun, based on the New Yorker article about a bank robber who kept his career going until he was nearly 80. An archived version of the article is available here, and it starts with a captivating description of Forrest Tucker's last bank robbery, for which he dressed in all white and after which he thanked the tellers for handing over more than $5,000. Tucker said of his life story, "I've been in prison all my life, except for the times I've broken out," and walks around with shrapnel...

Though the actor still be a hot commodity and someone to watch, he’s watching himself more closely these days, thanks to the underwhelming numbers behind The A-Team. What should’ve been a lauching pad for Bradley Cooper is now a cautionary tale, and it seems M. Night Shyamalan’s secret super-powers project will suffer a loss.
Cooper has dropped out of the Last Airbender director’s next film due to apparent shooting conflicts with The Hangover 2. On the flip side of this, Cooper has been offered the lead against Anna Faris in Tmi, a rom-com about two friends who, after a “crazy night,” realize they may be more than friends. Original, yes it is. [Pajiba]
Ryan Reynolds was set to star in the film, which most likely is no longer the case if Cooper’s getting offered the film. Reynolds made that movie already. It was called Just Friends...

With Father's Day approaching, framescourer chooses the cathartic cameos and double-takes that capture dads and their offspring in the same frame
Many of the most intriguing father and son partnerships are divided by the camera: as a director, Clint Eastwood has used his son Kyle's music in a number of his later films; sadly, tantalisingly, John Huston was too ill to participate in Mr North, his son Danny's directorial debut. There are some near misses too: it might perhaps have been a relief to both Brawley Nolte and his father, Nick, that, playing the same character at different ages in the violently semi-Oedipal Affliction, they were safely separated by the buffer of flashback.
Yet it's having father and son in the same frame that really intrigues. To what extent is it representative of the off-camera dynamic? Will either party take the chance to get something off his chest, overstepping some...

Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Directed by: Thor Freudenthal
Cast: Zachary Gordon, Robert Capron, Rachael Harris, Steve Zahn
Running Time: 1 hr 30 min
Rating: PG
Release Date: March 19, 2010
Plot: Based on the best-selling illustrated novel by Jeff Kinney, this film chronicles the adventures of a smart-mouthed middle school student named Greg Heffley (Gordon), who must survive his new environment.
Who’S It For? Darned good question. It’s supposed to be a family comedy.
Expectations: I’ve seen the book around bookstores and thought it looked very cute. I thought maybe it would translate nicely into a movie. Cue dramatic music as I stroll blindly, cheerfully, toward the big pothole.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Zachary Gordon as Greg Heffley: What you have here is an unextraordinary actor playing an unlikable character. It’s difficult to graph how uninteresting this is without going into specifics like 1/1,000,000 of a point or .00000000009 to the nth degree.

I have to say that I’m always interested in and surprised by what entertains filmmakers and Moore’s list does not disappoint. There are, as should be expected, quite a few films on this list that I have not seen but of those I have seen I agree with his #’s 6, 7, 17, & 20 picks. Here ripped from an e-mail that was posted on another website are Michael Moore’s list of the 20 “best pictures” he saw in the year 2009:
1. “Troubled Water” (see above)
2. “Everlasting Moments” – A wife in the early 20th century wins a camera and it changes her life (from Sweden).
3. “Captain Abu Raed” – This first feature from Jordan tells the story of an airport janitor who the neighborhood kids believe is a pilot.
4. “Che” – A brilliant, unexpected mega-film about Che Guevara by Steven Soderbergh.
5. “Dead Snow” – The scariest film I’ve seen in a while about zombie Nazis...

British actress Emily Blunt has defended her decision to swap independent movies for big budget blockbusters - insisting she doesn't need to "atone" for her career choices. After a supporting role in hit fashion film "The Devil Wears Prada", Blunt has made her name with a string of smaller films, including "The Young Victoria", "Sunshine Cleaning" and "The Great Buck Howard".
She's now set to hit cinemas with blockbusters including "The Wolfman" and "Gulliver's Travels", but insists she's not chasing big money movies. Blunt says, "I knew what I was signing up for. Really I did. People were, like, 'Why have you strayed away from independent films?'. I thought, 'Give us a break! I've hardly done anything but independent films.'"
And Blunt praises her "The Wolfman" co-star Benicio Del Toro for offering her some good advice. She adds, "I think Benicio put it best. He said, 'C'mon, man.

Joe R. Lansdale has been called a Mojo storyteller, a cult figure, a gifted storyteller, a folklorist, and an American original. I prefer to think of him as a purveyor of the Southern Gothic genre with stops to deliver some of the best crime stories through his recurring characters Hap Collins and Leonard Pine. (If you haven’t read a Hap and Leonard story, you need to get with the program and pick up a copy of Savage Season, their first adventure.)
Joe has also delighted horror fans with film versions of his short stories Bubba Ho-Tep and Incident On and Off a Mountain Road.
Dread Central recently spoke with the laconic Texan about how he feels being a cult icon as well as what’s up next.
DC: Thank you so much for taking time to speak with Dread Central, Joe. With your prolific writing schedule, I’m surprised you had the time.

The festival's return to its indie roots bore fruit in a crop of good movies, although few of them show commercial promise
Heading into Sundance there was a lot of talk about how this year the festival was returning to its independent roots. Recent editions had begun to shift away from the festival of discovery originally conceived by Robert Redford, who like an endangered species of mountain goat still draws coos, cameras and elbow nudges when Park City passersby spot him squinting wistfully at a distant pine tree.
Over the years Sundance had courted bigger and bigger films with A-list talent. The problem was entries such as What Just Happened? (starring Robert De Niro) or The Great Buck Howard (featuring John Malkovich) weren't very good. They took ages to sell, and when they came out they hardly made any money. The financial collapse and the challenges of an overcrowded film-releasing...

Emily Blunt, who was sensational in The Devil Wears Prada, is not mincing her words when it comes to British film critics lambasting her new film, The Young Victoria.
Says the actress:
"Over here, people accept it as being a love story, allowing themselves to be swept away by it, rather than getting too caught up in the details." Okay, American are easy I guess, but then the film didn't exactly skimp on the historical details either."
Reports Roger Moore (not the actor): Of late, Blunt, 26, has made a specialty of playing Americans -- in "Sunshine Cleaning," "The Great Buck Howard" and "Dan in Real Life."
"But you can't get more British than playing the queen, this queen," she says. "I learned very little about Victoria in school. We've had so many kings and queens that I think the schools find it quite hard to focus on one. I...

I say it’s about time, as we enter the second decade of the 21st century, to put behind us all that nonsense about “feminism” and undignified female self-determination. Yes, we ladies must at last put down our feet daintily clad in $600 shoes and say: No more. It’s wonderfully refreshing, therefore, to see the new decade starting off right with an appropriately traditionally minded film like Leap Year. Oh, the hairy-legged among the fairer sex will howl their indignation -- they care not whether they behave in a ladylike manner -- which means that the movie is doing its job. Amy Adams (Julie & Julia, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian) is absolutely delightful as everything a lady should be in today’s modern-but-conservative world. Her Anna, a 30something Bostonian, has a job, which is very important for keeping a lady in the gowns, shoes, jewelry, and makeup...

Colin Hanks is set to star in Fox's thirteen-episode series "Jack and Dan" created by Matt Nix. This also stars Bradley Whitford and is produced by Fox TV Studios. Story focuses on Jack (Hanks), an ambitious, by-the-book detective who undermines himself with the result of winding up in a dead-end job at the Los Angeles Police Department. On top of that, he's been partnered with Dan (played by Whitford) who is a wild-card cop as well as a drunk. The only thing keeping Dan in the job is a heroic act years ago. Filming on the action comedy is slated to begin early next year. Hanks recently did an arc on AMC's "Mad Men" and was also in the recent successful comedy "The House Bunny" as well as the Diane Lane thriller "Untraceable" and "The Great Buck Howard" with John Malkovich.

Colin Hanks is set to topline "Jack and Dan," Matt Nix's new 13-episode hourlong series for Fox.
The straight-to-series project, which also stars Bradley Whitford, is produced by Fox TV Studios under the company's international co-production model.
It centers on Jack (Hanks), an ambitious, by-the-book detective whose habit of undermining himself has resulted in a dead-end position at the Los Angeles Police Department. Worse, he has been partnered with Dan (Whitford), a drunken, lecherous, wild-card cop who hangs onto his job only because of a heroic act years before.
Filming on the show, an action comedy in the tone of Nix's USA Network series "Burn Notice," is slated to begin early next year.
Hanks, who began as a regular on WB Network's sci-fi drama "Roswell," recently did an arc on AMC's "Mad Men." His feature credits include comedy "The House Bunny," "Untraceable" and "The Great Buck Howard."
He is repped by CAA and BenderSpink.

Watchmen—Director’S Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday...

If there’s one phrase I would use to describe The Great Buck Howard, it would be “low key.” This is a PG-rated, harmless and rather toothless look at a has-been whose days of fame have long since passed him by. Written and directed by Sean McGinly but driven by an appealing performance from John Malkovich, Buck Howard is watchable but neither particularly engaging nor emotionally effecting.
Malkovich plays Buck Howard, whose glory days (and 61, count it, 61 appearances on Late Night with Johnny Carson) are behind him. Howard is equal parts eccentric and manic, a drama queen with a tendency to go off on the poor unfortunate soul who happens to be his assistant at the time. Enter Troy Gable (Colin Hanks), fresh out of law school (which he quits, walking out in the middle of a class) and with aspirations to find his calling (could it be writing?).

The Great Buck Howard has all the elements necessary to make a movie worth watching. The story is decent, offering a smattering of both comedy and drama and the acting is superb. Despite it's heavily limited release, Howard has made it to DVD where a larger fan base will certainly ensue. Based on the life of the Amazing Kreskin, Howard is charming, if not sappy, from beginning to end.

There’s at least one very good movie in here and a few unique independent offerings that you might want to take a peek at. .I love this town!. Buck Howard has seen better days, but he still thinks of himself as a star. Who is Buck Howard you say? Didn.t you see one of the 61 appearances he had on the Carson show? In any event, he.s coming to a community center near you. Troy Gable (Colin Hanks) is in law school thanks to the wishes of his father (real life dad Tom Hanks). One day he realizes that he just doesn.t want to be a lawyer, but wants to be a writer, and drops out of school - not telling his father, of course. Finally after weeks of lacklustre DVD releases, we've got a decent assortment of must-buy discs to gorge on including Zack Snyder's Watchmen (both the theatrical version and the director's cut) and the beautiful stop-motion animated Coraline. There are also some interesting indie releases this week including the superhero comedy Super Capers, the surreal Zach Galifianakis flick Visioneers, and Bruce McDonald's cerebral take on the zombie genre Pontypool (unfortunately, only available in Canada at the moment). In terms of TV, we've got the second and final season of Pushing Daisies, the final season of Prison Break, and all three seasons of the cult British comedy The Mighty Boosh. Is that enough for you? What will you be picking up this week? Watchmen [1] Watchmen: Director's Cut [2] (DVD, Blu-ray [3]) Coraline [4] (DVD, Blu-ray [5]) Pontypool [6] (Canada only) The Great Buck Howard [7] (DVD, Blu-ray [8]) Echelon Conspiracy [9] (DVD, Blu-ray [10]) Visioneers [11] Super Capers [12] The Mystical...

Watchmen Director's Cut
It may not have been exactly what Joel Silver was once scheming up, but Zack Snyder's adaptation is at the top of this week's new release list, with more goodness not included in the theatrical release. Blending new twists with a number of scenes straight out of the book, Watchmen is a film that Peter called "sledgehammer entertainment." Buy it. Also out on Blu-ray. (And big fans will want to also check out the Collector's Corner section for more Watchmen goodness.)

Coraline
Coraline slips into another world and finds an alternate version of her life that quickly turns from laughs to frights. Stop-motion animation in 3D, with a kickass female star, all from the mind of Neil Gaiman. In her review, Jette said it "is gorgeously fantastic, in all senses of the word." Buy it. Also on Blu-ray.
