"Breaking Bad" was nominated for 29 Emmys in its first for seasons. It scored nods for acting, directing, cinematography, editing and sound mixing -- but never writing.
That drought finally ended with the first half of Season 5. Among the AMC series' 13 nominations this year are two for writing -- Thomas Schnauz for the episode "Say My Name" and George Mastras for "Dead Freight."
Mastras also got his first directing credit on "Dead Freight," which included a complex train-robbery sequence that he had to put together both on the page and on location. It was no small feat -- Mastras tells Zap2it the scene filled "10 or 15 pages" of the script as he laid out the multiple cuts between several characters and places.

"I guess if you weren't directing, maybe you'd just kind of write the action out and not do it that way," Mastras says.

Over the years, John Frank Levey has amassed an impressive array of Emmy and Artios awards for his work on such groundbreaking shows as "ER" and "The West Wing." At this year's Artios ceremony, he was honored with the Hoyt Bowers Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the casting profession. Levey, whose credits also include "Smith," "The Evidence," and "Third Watch," recently cast the critically beloved cop drama "Southland," which NBC canceled before its second season even hit the air. Luckily, the series found a home on the cable channel TNT. "It's one of the casts I'm most proud of," says Levey. "I mean, I guess you're most in love with your most recent project, but I just think that cast is fantastic and I think that show has to have a continued and additional life, and I think it will do well on cable."Directing to CastingI had the...

Chicago – “The Mentalist” is the only significant new hit for the 2008-2009 season and the number one rule in TV is that if something works once, try and replicate it. Viewers can expect to see dozens of clones of the Simon Baker series in the next few years. It is into this atmosphere that Fox hopes their newest crime series, “Lie To Me,” can find a loyal audience.
Network TV ratings may be sliding across the board, but there is one genre that seems more resilient to the erosion than others - the crime drama. From network staples like “CSI” to cable shows like “The Closer,” every network head is looking for the next procedural with a twist, the show that they can keep on the air for years, preferably with a revolving door cast and very little effort on their part.

Jodi Lyn O'Keefe sits down with TVGuide to talk about her role as bad girl Gretchen Morgan in "Prison Break" season four. "I'll give myself extra credit for that!" she says during the interview.
When asked if the series goes on another season and she could resurface, she answers she would love to see Gretchen breaking out of the women's prison. "Yeah! [Laughs] That would be great," so she states.
Meanwhile, when asked about what her next job will be after completing her duty in the Fox's TV series, she considers to take a holiday. "...I came back to Jersey to hang out with my family. Everything will start back up in the new year - depending on what goes on with the [possible Screen Actors Guild] strike," she explains.

The ABC network has been announcing its new Fall 2006 schedule this week. As part of that, they've been telling us what won't be returning, much to the dismay of some TV viewers. It turns out that none of the scripted series introduced on ABC last fall will be returning.
Commander in Chief - ABC will begin airing the remaining new episodes on Wednesday, May 31, 2006. Fans of the series will be able to purchase Commander in Chief on DVD in the Fall. I would expect there to be some interesting supplemental materials concerning this promising but troubled series. (Download Commander in Chief on iTunes)
Crumbs - The outrageous comedy with Jane Curtin, William Devane and Fred Savage is not on the ABC Fall 2006 schedule. Five of the existing eight episodes were aired.
The Evidence - This Rob Estes drama shot six episodes (aired four) and has been off the schedule since April.

Under the one-year pact, Jones may join one of the new Touchstone TV series that make the cut for ABC's 2006-07 schedule. The studio and the network also have an option to develop a series project, targeted for fall 2007, for Jones to star in. The deal keeps Jones in the ABC fold following the actor's starring turn in the network's midseason drama series The Evidence.

'Idol,' tourney drive TV ratings week
The American Idol hopefuls and Barry Manilow crooned to the tune of another weekly win for Fox in the adults 18-49 demographic, while the series of upsets in the NCAA men's basketball tournament cut down the ratings net in total viewers for CBS in a narrow win over Fox for the week ending March 26. Among the debuts, Fox's new reality series Unanimous was unanimously voted the top performer, riding high on Idol's coattails Wednesday, while the crime dramas The Evidence on ABC and Heist on NBC didn't bring out the best in each other in their first face-off in the Wednesday 10 p.m. slot. Airing behind the results show of American Idol (27.7 million viewers, 11.4 rating/27 share among adults 18-49), Unanimous (16 million, 7.1/16) scored the highest retention of Idol demo lead-in for a series premiere or a special in about two years and tied ABC's Lost for the top spot in adults 18-49 in the 9:30-10 p.m. half-hour, according to Nielsen Media Research data.

ABC schedule shifts include 'Alias,' 'Faith'
ABC unveiled some late midseason schedule shuffling that will send returning series Alias and Hope & Faith to new nights. Alias, which is in its final season, is moving from Thursday to Wednesday at 8 p.m. beginning April 19. The spy drama took a brief hiatus from its 8 p.m. Thursday slot beginning in January, when Dancing With the Stars made a successful run in its time slot. Faith, which has struggled on Fridays, will move to Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. beginning March 21, following According to Jim. ABC also said it has postponed the premiere of the new drama What About Brian for two weeks, slotting a sneak preview April 16 after Desperate Housewives. The next day, it will settle into its regular time slot at 10 p.m. Monday. In addition, ABC has scheduled its four-hour miniseries The Ten Commandments in successive two-hour installments April 10 and April 11. The network confirmed that the drama Invasion, which is stepping out of its 10 p.m. Wednesday slot to give new hour The Evidence a try, will return to the schedule April 19.

'Five People' a heavenly gift for DP Morgenthau
Despite his relatively young age, cinematographer Kramer Morgenthau is beginning to make a serious mark in a field that has traditionally been dominated by seasoned veterans. The 39-year-old director of photography received his first Emmy nomination Thursday for outstanding cinematography for a miniseries or movie for ABC's The Five People You Meet in Heaven. It has been a steady climb for Morgenthau who began shooting features in 1995 in New York. The first kudos from his peers came just months ago when Morgenthau was nominated by the American Society of Cinematographers at the annual ASC Awards for Five People. In the short time since, Morgenthau has continued to build momentum, quickly becoming a go-to guy for television pilots. He shot the pilot for ABC's Blind Justice, more recently, the network's new drama The Evidence, in addition to FX's Over There, an episode of which he is scheduled to direct this month.
