The dolphins in the film are all Common (or Atlantic) Bottlenose Dolphins.
The Hanky Panky is a real dolphin research vessel. For the film the boat was made to look older than it is and messier than when it is used for research purposes.
The weekly fish fry night and its origin as a fundraiser after a hurricane is a real event in the town on the Bahamas where filming took place.
