A quarter century after winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Girl, Interrupted,” Angelina Jolie is hoping to pick up the Best Actress trophy for her performance in “Maria.” In terms of Oscar history, she’d join Meryl Streep, Jessica Lange, Cate Blanchett, and Renée Zellweger, who all won for featured performances before prevailing again for star turns.
Jolie’s role, that of real-life opera singer Maria Callas, has already been proven to be awards-worthy and won Jane Seymour an Emmy nearly four decades ago. This English rose featured in the 1988 TV movie “Onassis: The Richest Man in the World,” opposite Raul Julia as Aristotle Onassis and Anthony Quinn as his father, Socrates. This remains her only Emmy win from five nominations.

A winner of Oscars, Emmys and Tonys, Jeremy Irons has been delivering top-notch performances for four decades now, and as he has been turning his sights back to television in recent years. I suspect that we are in store for many more great performances to come.
Irons is one-for-one at the Academy Awards, winning for his only nomination in Barbet Schroeder‘s “Reversal of Fortune” as suspected murderer Claus von Bülow, considered by many to be one of the definitive performances of the ’90s. It also brought Irons his first Golden Globe Award. Irons is also perfect at the Tony Awards, winning the Best Actor award for Tom Stoppard‘s 1984 production of “The Real Thing”. And he was won three of the five Emmy Awards for which he has been nominated, both as an actor and as a narrator (especially with that voice).

It’s not uncommon for a prominent British actor to be labeled British acting royalty. All types, from Laurence Olivier to Maggie Smith, have worn the label but nobody perhaps has literally worn that title recently to the extent as Helen Mirren. She has had a long varied career and has earned her place as one of the holders of acting’s triple crowns by playing a variety of British monarchs.
Her Oscar came for playing the British Queen Elizabeth II in “The Queen,” which dealt with her reaction to the unexpected death of Princess Diana. She would revisit the role nine years later for a Tony on Broadway in the play “The Audience,” which dealt with Elizabeth’s relationships with the various prime ministers who have served under her. It was a different Queen, Elizabeth I, that would bring Mirren one of her four Emmys, when she starred in...

The casts vying for the 2024 Best Film Ensemble SAG Award hail from “American Fiction,” “Barbie,” “The Color Purple,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and “Oppenheimer.” Our current racetrack odds indicate that the “Oppenheimer” team (82/25) will triumph, followed in order of likelihood by the actors from “Barbie” (37/10), “American Fiction” (9/2), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), and “The Color Purple” (9/2).
For the first time since 2021, all five films nominated for this ensemble prize are also in the running for at least one individual acting award. None produced four solo nominees like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” both did last year, but “Oppenheimer” got close with three: star Cillian Murphy and featured players Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt. Those with two (one lead and one supporting) each are “American Fiction” (Jeffrey Wright; Sterling K. Brown), “Barbie” (Margot Robbie; Ryan Gosling), and “Killers of the Flower Moon” (Lily Gladstone...

Given that it has been accomplished by eight performers, the feat of winning SAG Awards for two different limited series or TV movies isn’t as rare as it once was. Nonetheless, it remains an impressive achievement since no one has yet topped it, but that could change in a matter of months. Heading into the 30th SAG Awards ceremony, two-time Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor victor Mark Ruffalo has a shot at snagging another trophy of the same kind, which would earn him the distinction of being either non-continuing program category’s first triple champion.
Ruffalo’s first two individual SAG Award wins came for his work in the HBO productions “The Normal Heart” (2015) and “I Know This Much Is True” (2021). In this case, he is seeking recognition as a star of the four-part Netflix adaptation of the heavily lauded novel “All the Light We Cannot See,” on...

According to 85% of Gold Derby’s 2024 Golden Globes predictors, former Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress champion Emma Stone (2016’s “La La Land”) is practically assured a repeat victory thanks to her work in the fantasy epic “Poor Things.” Assuming this decisive opinion is truly reflective of those of Golden Globes voters, it would only make sense for her to leverage that love into a same-year Best TV Comedy Actress notice for her performance on the buzzy new Showtime series “The Curse.”
Were she to prevail on her potential bids for said big screen and small screen projects, she would make history as the youngest individual to simultaneously achieve both types of acting Golden Globe wins.

Helen Mirren made a welcome return to TV with her stunning Western series “1923” opposite the inimitable Harrison Ford. The series is another show from Taylor Sheridan‘s Western world, which started off with Kevin Costner‘s “Yellowstone” and also includes the prequel “1883.”
This one is set in between those two shows and follows Mirren and Ford as married couple Cara and Jacob Dutton, who lead their family through a variety of challenges in the early 20th century, including the prohibition era and the Great Depression. As Cara, Mirren owns the screen with her Dame-like presence and commands your attention in every scene she’s in. She’s introduced with a shotgun but doesn’t need such props to show what a powerful actress she is. She’s a force to be reckoned with, as usual, as critics have noted.

“Yellowstone” may have been shut out at the 2022 Emmys, but Paramount+’s Western spinoff “1923” is hoping to break that cycle.
Creator Taylor Sheridan, who wrote the entire first season of the freshman series, has chosen to submit the premiere episode, titled “1923,” for Emmy consideration, Variety can exclusively confirm. In addition, the same kickoff episode will serve as Ben Richardson’s official submission for outstanding directing for a drama.
Read Variety’s Awards Circuit for the latest Emmy predictions in all categories.
The eight-episode prequel to Paramount Network’s “Yellowstone” and sequel to Paramount+’s “1883” follows a generation of the Dutton family during various hardships, including prohibition, drought and the early stages of the Great Depression.
With the star power of veteran actors Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, the duo will be vying for the lead actor and lead actress drama prizes.

A running gag on the Hulu limited series “Welcome to Chippendales” was Nick De Noia (Murray Bartlett) telling people that he has won not one but two Emmys for choreographing “Unicorn Tales.” Now Bartlett can pick up a second Emmy this year in the very category he won last year for “The White Lotus,” Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actor. And if that happens, he’ll break new ground as the first person to win the category two years in a row.
The list of people who’ve won Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actor more than once is very tiny in general. Since the category was established in 1975, only Beau Bridges has won it multiple times, prevailing in 1993 for “The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom” and 1997 for “The Second Civil War.” You could count Michael Moriarty, but he only won this specific category,...

Sylvester Stallone’s first regular television series role on the Paramount+ mob-themed series “Tulsa King” has put him in this year’s Emmy race. And while it’s not rare for a performer primarily or solely identified with features to find Emmy success, it’s significantly less common for them to generate it in a comedy category, where Stallone presently finds himself in 10th place among series leads in the Gold Derby combined count.
A longshot? Absolutely. But there is certainly plenty of precedent for movie stars shuttling to TV and earning Emmy recognition. Here are 10 examples:
Al Pacino – He won lead actor in a miniseries or movie statues for his portrayal of Roy Cohn in “Angels in America” (2004) and Dr. Jack Kevorkian in “You Don’t Know Jack” (2010). That’s double his number of Oscar wins, Pacino’s lone triumph being for “Scent of a Woman” in 1993. Meryl Streep – Streep...

Dame Helen Mirren is no stranger to the Emmy podium. The Oscar and Tony-winning actress has earned five Emmy statues from 12 nominations over the course of her nearly fifty-year career in television. Since her work on “The Dropout” has already brought her an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and a Critics Choice Award, Amanda Seyfried only needs a Screen Actors Guild Award in order to complete her major industry TV prize sweep. Based on the fact that no woman who has been nominated for all four awards and won the Emmy first has failed to win the other three, her path to victory is arguably clearer than that of any other 2023 SAG Award contender. If she is successful on this final bid, she will be the 12th woman to win both a lead Emmy and a SAG Award for the same TV movie or miniseries performance.

With her Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actress bid for Prime Video’s “The English,” Emily Blunt is now a four-time Screen Actors Guild Award nominee. Immediately after losing on his first Screen Actors Guild Awards outing to Michael Keaton (“Dopesick”), Evan Peters is back in the running for the organization’s Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actor prize. With his new bid for “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” the former “Mare of Easttown” nominee follows James Garner, Gary Sinise, and Tom Wilkinson as only the fourth back-to-back contender in his category’s history. At 36, he also surpasses Sinise (who was 40 on his second bid in 1996) as the youngest person to ever be nominated twice by the guild for limited series or telefilm acting.
None of Peters’ current competitors are SAG Awards newcomers, but only Steve Carell (“The Patient”) joins him in having been previously recognized for TV work. Two of the 12 nominations he received for “The Office” led to comedy ensemble victories (2007-2008), and he also has a film cast win to his name for 2006’s “Little Miss Sunshine.

Fresh off his Emmy win for his supporting turn on “Mare of Easttown,” Evan Peters is sitting pretty in first place in our Screen Actors Guild Awards odds for limited series/TV movie actor. Just like at the Emmys, this would be his first SAG Award nomination, and should he take home the prize on Feb. 27, he’ll become the category’s second youngest winner ever.
Peters turns 35 on Jan. 20 and would be just the second thirtysomething to win the award after Darren Criss, the youngest winner at 31 when he triumphed for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” in 2019. Prior to Criss, Gary Sinise was the youngest champ, having been 40 when he prevailed for “Truman” in 1996. Sinise nabbed a second statuette two years later for “George Wallace.”

“Mare of Easttown” had a good night(Mare) at the Emmys, winning three acting prizes for Kate Winslet, Julianne Nicholson and Evan Peters. And while the HBO hit can’t pull another hat trick at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, it can be the rare show to sweep the limited series/TV movie actress and actor categories.
In the 27-year history of the SAG Awards, just five shows have won both categories. “Angels in America” first achieved it in 2004 with Meryl Streep and Al Pacino. In 2007, “Elizabeth I” duo Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons triumphed. Two years after that, Laura Linney and Paul Giamatti won for “John Adams.” After a nine-year drought, “Big Little Lies” went 2 for 2 with Nicole Kidman and Alexander “The Tall Dude from ‘True Blood'” Skarsgard in 2018. The most recent victorious pair was Michelle Williams and Sam Rockwell for “Fosse/Verdon” in 2020, with the latter winning in an upset.

Though the Continental Congress severed political connections with Great Britain on July 4, 1776, with the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. has never detached with their obsession with the British Royal Family. Just look at 2021 Emmy nominations.
The fourth season of Netflix’ “The Crown” reaped 24 bids — the show has already won 10 Emmys — including series, for leads Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II, Emma Corrin as Diana, the Princess of Wales and Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles and for supporting players Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher, Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret and Emerald Fennell as Camilla Parker Bowles. And Oprah Winfrey’s blockbuster interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was nominated for best hosted nonfiction series or special.

“The Good Lord Bird” premiered on Showtime October 4 of last year telling the true story of abolitionist John Brown (played by Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke), including how he made his mark within the movement to abolish slavery and how his failed raid on the Federal Armory in Harpers Ferry helped light the spark that resulted in the American Civil War.
The seven-part limited series is told through the point of view of Henry Shackleford (Joshua Caleb Johnson), a teenage slave whose father is killed by Brown’s army in Kansas. Having nowhere else to turn, Shackleford becomes a part of Brown’s outfit, though everyone in the group believes him to actually be a young girl whom they give the nickname, “Onion.” Shackleford travels with Brown’s gang as they seek to undermine the institution of slavery while also evading capture by authorities. Last month, Anya Taylor-Joy became the second youngest Golden Globe winner of the Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress category when she took home the statuette for “The Queen’s Gambit.” And now the 24-year-old can duplicate that same feat at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where she’s again the heavy favorite.
Just like at the Globes, Taylor-Joy would be blocked from the “youngest winner” title by the same person, Angelina Jolie. Jolie was 23 when she nabbed the Globe and SAG Award for her turn in the HBO film “Gia” in 1999. But Taylor-Joy’s potential SAG achievement would be more notable because while the Globes have now awarded four women in their 20s in limited series/TV movie actress, Taylor-Joy would only be the second twentysomething to win the corresponding SAG category.

“Borat Subseqent Moviefilm” star Sacha Baron Cohen made history at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night, becoming the first actor to win twice for playing the same character in an original film and its sequel.
Cohen took home the Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy award for the “Borat” sequel. He previously won in the same category in 2007 for the first “Borat” film. In addition to Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, Cohen also accepted the Golden Globe award for Best Musical or Comedy, which “Borat Subseqent Moviefilm” won earlier in the ceremony.
While Cohen is not expected to garner an Academy Award nomination for “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” he is a top contender in the Best Supporting Actor category at the Oscars. Sacha Baron Cohen scored three Golden Globe nominations on Wednesday, tying Jamie Foxx and Helen Mirren’s record for the most nods by a performer in a single year. Very nice!
Baron Cohen was a double acting nominee, earning recognition in comedy or musical acting for his return as Kazakh journalist Borat Sagdiyev in “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and in drama acting for his portrayal as Abbie Hoffman in “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” Cohen’s third nod was for producing the “Borat” sequel, a nominee for best musical or comedy.
“Wawaweewah! I’m shocked and humbled to be nominated for 3 Golden Globes,” Baron Cohen wrote Wednesday morning on Twitter.

While there were several double Golden Globe nominations this year for actors and actresses, Sacha Baron Cohen is in rare form earning three noms, tying with Helen Mirren and Jamie Foxx for the most ever by a performer in one year at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association ceremony.
Cohen earned Golden Globe noms as a producer in the Best Comedy or Musical feature category and Best Actor Comedy or Musical for the sequel to his 2006 movie, Amazon’s Borat Subsequent Movie Film, in addition to a Best Supporting Role nod for his turn as Abbie Hoffman in Netflix’s The Trial of the Chicago 7.
Previously, Helen Mirren earned three noms in 2007 for Miramax’s The Queen (Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama), HBO’s Elizabeth I (Best Actress, Miniseries or TV Movie), and PBS’s Prime Suspect: The Final Act (Best Actress, Miniseries or TV Movie). Mirren won two out...

Last September, Zendaya made history when she won the Emmy for Best Drama Actress for her work on the first season of HBO’s “Euphoria.” She followed in the footsteps of ground-breaker Viola Davis (“How to Get Away with Murder”) to becoome the second Black actress to ever win the award. And, at 24, she was the youngest winner in the category’s history. As noteworthy and well-received as her win was, it came as quite a surprise to most awards prognosticators.
By our odds, hers was the most unexpected acting victory of the night. She ranked fourth in our predictions, ahead of Jodie Comer, the previous year’s winner, and Sandra Oh, who were both up for their performances on “Killing Eve.” She was running significantly behind predicted champ Laura Linney (“Ozark”), Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), and Olivia Colman (“The Crown”), but managed to overcome those odds and prevail over them all.

He reprised his role as Pius Xiii this year for a second season titled “The New Pope,” with John Malkovich joining the cast in the new title role as John Paul III. Are we underestimating Jeremy Irons (“Watchmen”) at the Emmys? He’s nominated for Best Movie/Limited Actor for playing Ozymandias, a superhero with a supreme intellect and a major superiority complex. Based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, he currently ranks fourth with 9/2 odds. But we might want to move him up in our forecasts because he rarely loses at the Emmys.
In fact, the only time Irons ever lost an Emmy when nominated was his very first bid: Best Movie/Limited Actor for “Brideshead Revisited” in 1982. That award went to Mickey Rooney for playing the intellectually disabled title character in “Bill.” After that, though, Irons went three-for-three, winning Best Voice-Over Performance in 1997 for “The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century,” Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor in 2006 for “Elizabeth I” and Best Narrator in 2014 for the “Big Cat Week” episode “Game of Lions.”

“I like my sleep,” admits Jeremy Irons about whether he plans to participate in the Emmys next month, which will for the first time be a live virtual ceremony across countless locations worldwide. While the actor is thrilled to be nominated for an Emmy, he says its unlikely he’ll be able to be on camera in the middle of the night where he lives in Ireland. “It goes out at three o’clock in the morning my time, so I shan’t be up for it, I shall probably leave some sort of message and wait and see when I wake up!”
“But ‘Watchmen’ got 26 nominations, which is amazing. Had I not got one, I would’ve been a bit peeved,” he laughs. This is Irons’ fifth career Emmy nomination, this time for HBO’s “Watchmen,” which leads all programs at the Emmys this year with a whopping 26 nominations.

Hulu‘s “The Great” premiered its entire 10-episode season on May 15, 2020, recounting the early years of Russia’s Catherine the Great (played by Elle Fanning) when she married the brutish Peter III (Nicholas Hoult) and plotted to bring revolutionary change to the country. It’s an unconventional take on world history described by the show itself as an “occasionally true story.” Will the Emmys appreciate its comedic skew? Scroll down for our exclusive video interviews with top Emmy contenders from the show.

Tom Hooper just won Worst Director at the Razzie Awards for the movie musical “Cats,” which led these kudos with six wins overall including Worst Picture. That’s bad enough in and of itself, but it also puts him in rarefied air: he’s only the third filmmaker ever to win both an Oscar and a Razzie for directing. Check out the complete list of Razzie winners here.
SEERazzies: Every Worst Picture Winner 1981 to Today
The first was Michael Cimino, who claimed Best Director and Best Picture for “The Deer Hunter” (1978). But then he went and made the notorious western flop “Heaven’s Gate” (1981), which won him Worst Director, though the film mercifully lost Worst Picture to “Mommie Dearest.” Cimino went on to earn two more Razzie nominations for writing and directing “Year of the Dragon” (1985), but he didn’t win.

Almost from the moment the trailer for “Cats” premiered it looked like it might be destined for the Razzies and not the Oscars despite its strong pedigree. That turned out to be true as the film is nominated nine times including Worst Picture. If Tom Hooper ends up claiming Worst Director for it, he’ll be only the third filmmaker ever to achieve an unfortunate feat: winning both an Oscar and a Razzie for directing.

British actor Jeremy Irons, who plays Ozymandias in the HBO series “Watchmen” and won an Oscar in 1991 for “Reversal of Fortune,” will serve as president of the International Jury at the 70th Berlin Intl. Film Festival, the event revealed Thursday.
Berlinale artistic director Carlo Chatrian said: “With his distinctive style Jeremy Irons has embodied some iconic characters that have accompanied me throughout my journey in cinema, making me aware of the complexity of human beings. His talent and the choices he has taken both as an artist and as a citizen make me feel proud to welcome him as president of the jury for the 70th edition of the Berlinale.”
Irons said: “It is with feelings of great pleasure and not inconsiderable honor that I take on the role of president of the International Jury for the Berlinale 2020, a festival that I have admired for so long and that I have always enjoyed attending.

Kaitlyn Dever earned her first Golden Globe nomination this year: Best TV Movie/Limited Actress for her role as a sexual assault survivor in Netflix’s “Unbelievable.” But can she win for it? The Hollywood Foreign Press Association could essentially honor her for two performances for the price of one since she also co-starred in the film “Booksmart.”
It’s fairly common for an actor to be nominated for multiple projects at the Globes and then to win for one of them. In this category alone Kate Winslet won in 2012 for the HBO limited series “Mildred Pierce” when she was also nominated for her film role in “Carnage.” Before that Helen Mirren earned a trio of nominations in a single year in 2007; she won this race for “Elizabeth I,” where she was also nominated for “Prime Suspect: The Final Act,” and she won Best Film Drama Actress for “The Queen.

Patricia Arquette spent 2019 pulling off upsets at award shows. With last year’s late-breaking “Escape at Dannemora,” the Oscar winner swept the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice and Screen Actors Guild Awards in limited series/TV movie actress, knocking off presumed frontrunner and “Sharp Objects” star Amy Adams (they tied at Critics’ Choice). Then at the Emmys, where she was expected to lose in lead for “Dannemora” to “Fosse/Verdon’s” Michelle Williams and did, Arquette still walked away a winner when she beat favorite Patricia Clarkson (“Sharp Objects”) in supporting for “The Act.” She’s already scored Globe, Critics’ Choice and SAG bids for the Hulu anthology series, and if she can manage another upset at SAG, she’ll be the first person to win the limited series/TV movie actress category back to back.

Scarlett Johansson went from zero to two career individual Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations in the span of a minute last week when she earned bids for her lead turn in “Marriage Story” and her supporting part in “Jojo Rabbit” — the 11th time an actor has scored double individual bids in film. But can she win both?
Only two people have won two individual SAG Awards in one night: Helen Mirren and Idris Elba. But their victories were across film and TV, so Johansson would be the first to win two for film, which, needless to say, is much more difficult. Mirren nabbed lead actress en route to her Oscar coronation for “The Queen” (2006) and was honored for playing another monarch in the miniseries “Elizabeth I,” for which she later won an Emmy. Elba received statuettes for his supporting turn in “Beasts of No Nation” (2015) and in limited series/TV movie actor for “Luther.
