And just like that, winter has come again. HBO Max’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by the return of the king. Or more accurately: the return of the queen … of the Seven Kingdoms.
Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Aug. 21, just over three years after Game of Thrones concluded in controversial fashion with “The Iron Throne.” This new series is a prequel, depicting the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons from George R.R. Martin’s lore. When dragon fights dragon, the realm will be torn asunder. But the viewer will certainly delight in all the Targaryen action.

Let The Right One In (Magnolia) An awkward 12 year-old boy, ignored by his mother and the target of bullies, finds himself drawn to his new neighbor: a girl his own age who only appears at night, and seems herself to be as lonely an outcast as he. Haunting film from Sweden is best described as The 400 Blows meets Nosferatu, and contains some of the most haunting imagery of any film in recent memory. Truly a unique and memorable work. Bonuses: Deleted scenes; Featurette; Photo and poster gallery. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
Paramount Centennial Collection Paramount offers two more classic titles, restored, remastered and loaded with extras. Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch A Thief stars Cary Grant as a retired jewel thief trying to enjoy his sunset years on the French Riviera with a minimum of drama, until he catches the eye of a high-maintenance heiress (Grace Kelly,...

Disney's "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" broke out of a crowded pack to take best of show at the weekend boxoffice.
The movie full of conversing canines -- Drew Barrymore leads the voice cast as pampered pooch Chloe, who must fend for herself south of the border -- took in an estimated $29 million, posting Disney's biggest October opening by easily surpassing the $22.1 million that "Ladder 49" grabbed in 2004.
With six wide releases jostling for attention, none of the other newcomers could fend off continuing strength on the part of DreamWorks/Paramount's thriller "Eagle Eye." The Shia Labeouf starrer fell by just 39% in its second weekend as it collected an estimated $17.7 million to bring its domestic boxoffice cume to $54.6 million.
Of the other newcomers, Sony's teen-oriented "Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist," starring Michael Cera and Kat Dennings, showed the most promise, securing the No. 3 spot with $12 million. Warners' Western "Appaloosa," expanding to 1,045 theaters in its third weekend,...

Dunst Banned Writer From Film Set Over Acting 'Snub'
Hollywood actress Kirsten Dunst banned a writer from the set of her new movie after he allegedly criticised her acting ability.
British novelist Toby Young wrote the book on which the actress's new film - How to Lose Friends + Alienate People - is based, and visited the set on several occasions.
And on his second visit, Young made comments regarding Dunst's performance to a producer - and it led to the actress asking movie bosses to bar him from the studio.
Young says, "She overheard me giving the producer a note on her performance in a particular scene. At the time, I didn't think of it as a criticism, more as a helpful bit of advice, and the producer took it in that spirit.
"But Kirsten overheard this exchange and interpreted it as a complaint about her acting ability. It was after this, apparently, that she took Bob (Weide, the director) to one side and asked if I could be kept at arms length in future.
"Bob carried out this edict with a good deal of tact. I didn't realise it, but this was, in effect, Bob carrying out Kirsten's instructions."...

U.S. pics boost U.K. bank
LONDON -- Inward investment, overseas cash invested in filmmaking here, stood at 324 million pounds ($667.5 million) for the first six months of the year compared with 253 million pounds for the first half of 2006 thanks to films like Sweeney Todd and The Dark Knight, according to the latest report from the U.K. Film Council.
Overall, the first six months of 2007 saw 420 million pounds ($865.3 million) pumped into film production in the U.K. both here and from abroad, hitting the same combined levels as the year-ago period.
U.K. co-productions plummeted from 42 in the first half of 2006 to just nine in the first six months of 2007, the Council said.
But such productions "have significantly picked up" in the third quarter of 2007, with another 20 co-productions made in the U.K., bringing the total this year to 29.
Hollywood productions adding to the investment boom include Mamma Mia!, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and The Tale of Desperaux.
Homegrown U.K. productions keeping the overall 420 million pounds production figure on track include How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, Brideshead Revisited, St. Trinian's, The Edge of Love and Revolutionary Road.
