Shrek was one of the more odd films to come out of the early 2000s, but the film was one of the most successful animated features of its time. It stayed a novel take on the fantasy film genre that broke the mold Dinsey had set up for fairytales.

As technological advances make even more astonishing imagery possible for many of the leading contenders in the animated feature Oscar race, they’re still leaning toward the skilled hands of the artisans who’ve mastered their craft and away from AI or machine learning.
While some may use machine learning — a type of AI — in the early stages of motion capture or to iterate ideas, the knowledge of experienced VFX artists and the performance capabilities of animators are central to creating the unique imagery sought by the filmmakers behind these movies. Some films, like “Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim,” are more focused on traditional low-tech tools to create their look.
“Transformers One,” an origin story helmed by Josh Cooley, was designed with heavy research on both previous Transformers storytelling and the types of metals that could be used to create the impact the filmmakers wanted. Cooley’s...

In its nearly 30 years of existence, DreamWorks Animation has had a remarkable trajectory marked primarily by the bulk of franchises it created, as much as through the quality of the films themselves. Consider that one of its chief competitors, Pixar Animation Studios, started making feature-length computer-animated films in 1995 and has made just 28 features in the intervening 30 years. DreamWorks? Well, it's made 49 features in just over 25 years. Some of these films are best left forgotten or have only been rediscovered over time courtesy of oddball memes (see: "Bee Movie"). But DreamWorks Animation, amidst the Trolls and boss babies, the chatty penguins of Madagascar, and silent horses who embody the spirit of the Cimarron, has made 10 genuinely solid movies. And with the arrival in late September of DreamWorks' "The Wild Robot," there's no better time than right now to rank those 10 films and see if the studio's latest title makes the grade.

DreamWorks Animation has officially announced that Shrek 5 is in development, and is set to hit theaters on July 1, 2026.
Original voice actors Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey) and Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona) are all set to return, but we're not sure if Antonio Banderas will be back as Puss in Boots despite the massive success of his recent solo adventure, The Last Wish.
The movie will be helmed by Walt Dohrn, who served as a writer and artist on Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third, and as head of story on Shrek Forever After, in which he also voiced Rumpelstiltskin. Shrek 5 will be produced by franchise regular Gina Shay and Illumination founder Chris Meledandri; Brad Ableson will serve as co-director.

DreamWorks Animation has more green in its future.
The studio announced on Tuesday that the beloved franchise “Shrek” is coming back to theaters with a fifth installment. What’s more, “Shrek 5” has planted its flag on a date two years hence—July 1, 2026, to be precise. The studio made its declaration via social media, deploying Smash Mouth’s “All Star” and its earworm herald of “someBODY once told me.” An ogre-ifi-ed numeral 5 then did a little dance.

Confirmed for the voices are Mike Myers, the titular gassy ogre with a pure heart, Cameron Diaz as his beloved Princess Fiona, and Eddie Murphy as Donkey, the wisecracking donkey. It is unclear if Antonio Banderas, who voices Puss in Boots, will make an appearance.

Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz will all return for the antic fairytale sequel Shrek 5, DreamWorks Animation has announced. It’s out in July 2026.
“Not too Far, Far Away,” DreamWorks Animation wrote on Twitter/X/Muskbook last night (the 9th July) as it announced that fairytale comedy sequel Shrek 5 will emerge in 2026.
Respectfully, this is a lie. The space year 2026 is an incredibly long two years away. By then we’ll all be flying around using jetpacks and taking regular trips to a branch of McDonalds on the moon, where we’ll eat burgers and fries in pill form. Also, AI will have taken over the planet and none of us will have jobs.
On a more positive note, DreamWorks has confirmed that Mike Myers will return to voice the grouchy, green ogre of the title, Eddie Murphy will reprise his role as the voluble Donkey, and...

It’s been a couple of truly wild days for Shrek fans, who were left with two major news promising exciting new installments in the franchise.

The popular Shrek franchise is perhaps the most recognizable property to come out of DreamWorks Animation, with How To Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda following closely behind. The series has had four films, two spin-off films, and a mountain of other forms of merchandise, including video games. Not to mention his popularity in the internet meme community.
The last film in the series, Shrek: Forever After, aka Shrek: The Final Chapter, was released in 2010, meaning that audiences have not seen the green ogre in 14 years. While the character of Puss in Boots received his series with a film in 2011 and a sequel in 2022, the main series has been stagnant. Rumors of a fifth film have been talked about for years, with there even being a small teaser at the end of the last Puss in Boots film.

Rumors of a fifth film have been talked about for years, with there even being a small teaser at the end of the last Puss in Boots film.
Now, we may finally be returning to a land far, far away as actor Eddie Murphy,...

Eddie Murphy has confirmed that recording sessions for Shrek 5 have begun, and there’s a Donkey spin-off happening too.
Shrek is one of the most successful animated film franchises in history. With four films and the Puss In Boots spin-offs collectively grossing $4 billion, it is perhaps no surprise that Shrek 5 is on the way.
What is a surprise is how long it is taking to make. The last instalment, Shrek Forever After, was released in 2010 (although the last two Shrek films – while successful – were received nowhere near as well as the first two).
Now, 14 years later, production on Shrek 5 appears to be underway. Not only that, but once it is finished, work will begin on a Donkey spin-off film.
Eddie Murphy confirmed as much during an interview to promote Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, the incoming fourth instalment of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, which streams on Netflix from the 4th July.

In a surprising revelation, Eddie Murphy has announced that production on “Shrek 5” is already underway, with a potential release date set for 2025. The comedian, known for voicing the beloved character Donkey in the franchise, shared this information during interviews for his upcoming film “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley.”
“We started doing ‘Shrek 5’ months ago,” Murphy told Collider. “I recorded the first act, and we’ll be finishing it up this year.” He added, “I think it’s coming out in 2025.”
But the excitement doesn’t stop there. Murphy also confirmed that a Donkey spinoff movie is in development, following the success of the “Puss in Boots” films. “Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well,” he stated.
This news comes after reports from Variety in April 2023 suggesting that Universal and DreamWorks Animation were considering a fifth “Shrek” movie with the original cast, including Mike Myers...

The past few years have been far from how things should have turned out for movie studios. It would be wrong to suggest that we have not come across any blockbuster movie, but it is no secret that we’ve failed to witness a repeat of the exploits that was a characteristic of the pre Covid days. In spite of everything, in an era highlighted by the lackluster performance of movies across the board, there is a genre that has managed to script a comeback – animated flicks.

Eddie Murphy revealed in a new interview with Collider that he has already begun voice recording for “Shrek 5” and will next do a Donkey spinoff movie. Variety reported in April 2023 that Universal and DreamWorks Animation were eyeing a fifth “Shrek” movie with the original cast and a Donkey spinoff film for Murphy. It now seems like those projects are definitely happening, according to Murphy.
Variety has reached out to Universal for comment.
“We started doing [‘Shrek 5’] months ago,” Murphy told Collider. “I did this. There’s actually no reason for Netflix to do so anyway, but the streaming service is about to say goodbye to one of its most watched movies of all time as it keeps showing up in global charts more than twenty years after its initial release.
Probably DreamWorks Animation’s best and highest-grossing franchise ever, Shrek will soon be nowhere to be found for Netflix’s viewers unless they’d opt for another streaming platform.
Launched back in 2001, Shrek was quick to become an international long-standing hit that surely remains on a yearly rewatch list for millions of fans across the world. The plot revolves around unsociable and often pretty much aggressive ogre Shrek whose serene lonely life in a swamp surrounded by other fairytale creatures is jeopardized by ambitious Lord Farquaad who sees Shrek’s territory as another source of profit.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation have unveiled the latest trailer for The Wild Robot, a new adaptation of a literary sensation, Peter Brown’s beloved, award-winning, #1 New York Times bestseller.
The epic adventure follows the journey of a robot—Rozzum unit 7134, “Roz” for short — that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling.
Check out the super cute trailer below and see the movie in theaters September 27.
I love this trailer… can’t wait to see this!
The film definitely looks to be among this year’s Oscar nominees for Best Animated Feature. Mediawan Kids & Family is unveiling a raft of prestige animated feature projects at the Annecy Film Festival, including “Meow-woof” by Louis Clichy (“Asterix: The Secret of the Magic Potion”) and “Twisted” by Lino Disalvo (“Playmobil”).
Emmanuel Jacomet, who worked for over a decade alongside Aton Soumache and Dimitri Rassam on high profile IP’s such as “The Little Prince,” “Miraculous Ladybug” and “Playmobil,” took over the film division of Mediawan Kids & Family under a year ago with the ambition to develop a mix of mainstream franchise-based projects and auteur-driven 2D titles.
The executive, who lived in Los Angeles for a number of years, said also he aims at bringing together European and American talent and sensibilities on projects that are personal, yet boast an international appeal. The list of movies is only guaranteed to be available until the end of June, but until then Apple TV+ customers can watch some true classics.
Apple TV+ is continuing to step out of its wheelhouse and try something new in 2024. At the start of March, the streamer imported a wide selection of movies from various Hollywood studios, marking the first time in its history that Apple TV+ had added on a substantial number of non-original titles. Those films were only available for a limited time, some as short as a few weeks, but it proved popular enough for the platform to add more in April. Now, as first reported by 9to5 Mac, Apple TV+ is rolling out another wave of licensed films as it tries to determine which ones its audience are responding to the most.

Our beloved orange tabby Persian cat Garfield is back on the big screen after a long while with Chris Pratt voicing the character in The Garfield Movie. However, things were far from good which eventually affected the project at the global box office as it garnered negative reviews from critics and audiences alike.

While there’s still time for the movie to head to its streaming debut, it was unable to bring the same success that Puss in Boots: The Last Wish gained after its release two years ago.
What Went Wrong With Chris Pratt’s The Garfield Movie?
Sony’s The Garfield Movie has met with an underwhelming response from audiences and critics alike, leading to it becoming a disappointing project from what it was initially intended. One of the reasons that led to that outcome is the lead voice actor himself.

Of all the films premiering at Cannes this year, “The Most Precious of Cargoes” is both an anomaly (the first animated feature to compete for the Palme d’Or since “Persepolis” in 2007) and the most likely to become a classic. Blending the heavy lines of early-20th-century woodcuts with the gentle pastels of watercolor painting, “The Artist” director Michel Hazanavicius finds a poignant way to address not only the horrors of the Holocaust, but the kindness that combated it, crafting an indelible parable destined to be watched and shared by generations to come.

With each new month comes a strong desire to let go of some things in order to make room for what is new. And it seems that even the biggest streaming platforms feel the same way.
That's why they update their libraries every month. There are a lot of different movies leaving Netflix in May, but these 5 are a must watch (or rewatch) if you are a fan of quality cinema.
1. Uncut Gems (2019) – May 9
Many of you may not think much of Adam Sandler, at least that's what a lot of people say out loud, even though there's a good chance they fall asleep watching Sandler's best rom-coms. But every once in a while he stars in a movie that ends up proving how brilliant of an actor he really is.
Uncut Gems has a 91% on Tomatometer and features the actor in a serious role, portraying a man named Howard Ratner.

"Shrek" was a very important movie in animation history. It provided DreamWorks with its first true breakthrough hit, taking in $492 million in 2001. It ensured that Disney would have meaningful competition in the animation space for years to come, which has only been furthered in recent years with the dominance of Illumination in the marketplace. For DreamWorks though, it birthed what would become the studio's flagship franchise, one that has generated more than $3 billion since its inception. That franchise's biggest moment came in 2004 when "Shrek 2" hit theaters.
The animation house founded by former Disney executive Jeffrey Katzenberg hit a home run by pairing Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy as Shrek and Donkey in the first film, in no small part thanks to the stellar supporting cast.

After The Flash actor Ezra Miller faced a string of controversies, it seems that Amazon’s Invincible opted to play it safe and replace the actor with voice acting legend Eric Bauza. And it appears, Prime Video executed this change rather subtly, as Miller had previously voiced the character, Mad Scientist Da Sinclair who first appeared in the episode called You Look Kinda Dead in Season 1. However, when Sinclair reappeared in the latest episode of the series, the character was voiced by Bauza. But who is Eric Bauza?

There’s a compelling idea in anthropology that many ancient werewolf legends are derived from our species’ need to rationalize the more animalistic side of humanity – which is why lycanthropy has historically been used to explain everything from medieval serial killers to cannibalism. While I personally think there’s a lot more to unpack when it comes to tales of wolfmen and women, this is still a great example of why so many of our most enduring fairy tales involve big bad wolves.
And in the world of film, I think there’s only one feature that really nails the folkloric origins of werewolf stories, namely Neil Jordan’s 1984 fairy-tale horror classic, The Company of Wolves. Even four decades later, there’s no other genre flick that comes close to capturing the dreamlike ambience behind this strange anthology, and that’s why I’d like to take this opportunity to...

Warner Bros/Legendary Entertainment’s Dune: Part Two held strongly in its sophomore session at the international box office, adding $81M to handily cross the $200M overseas milestone, and reaching $367.5M globally.
We’ll dig further into Dune 2’s second frame below, including its China start. In the meantime, let’s look at what’s new this weekend.
Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 4 came out kicking as it begins a staggered overseas rollout. The fourquel opened to $22.2M in 41 markets which rep just 23% of the international landscape, and put the global debut at $80.5M. Spain was the only major in this first suite as the Jack Black-starrer will continue adding markets in the coming weeks to align with holiday play; it goes to China on March 22.
The offshore start, excluding previews, is bigger than Kung Fu Panda 2 and 3 in like-for-like markets at today’s rates.

It’s no secret that James Cameron waited years for the technology to catch up before he could hop on to filming Avatar: The Way of Water, which pioneered new underwater film technology. And it seems, similar was the case for DreamWorks’ upcoming film, Kung Fu Panda 4, which will be the first mainline entry in one of the studios’ most beloved franchises in 8 years.
Even though the third film in the franchise was a box-office hit, DreamWorks didn’t resort to working on the fourth one right away, and director Mike Mitchell has revealed the reason why.

Nearly a year ago, Dreamworks Animation released Puss In Boots: The Last Wish. The sequel to the somewhat successful mostly forgotten movie Puss In Boots. ‘Puss In Boots: The Last Wish’, also known as just Puss In Boots 2, follows Puss as he reaches the last of his nine lives. When gaining knowledge about a wishing star, he goes on an ambitious quest to find the star and wish for more lives. Encountering friends and foes along the way.
Upon its release, existing as a sequel to a spinoff of a popular franchise, the public’s expectations of Puss In Boots: The Last Wish weren’t high at all. When the film was released in America on the eleventh of December, 2022 (then elsewhere in other countries and territories), it surprisingly came with positive reviews. Surprising audiences away with its rich storytelling, great characters, and quite shockingly dark moments, Puss In Boots...

The new DC cinematic universe is entering a fresh new stage, and the latest news shows it's not afraid to do stuff that's a little weird or out of left field. According to a report by The InSneider, DC Studios is developing an untitled animated feature based on the comic series "Jurassic League," which was released in 2022 as a limited six-issue run. The movie will be about "a prehistoric version of Earth that see heroes and villains as dinosaurs." James Gunn, co-ceo of DC Studios and director of "The Suicide Squad," is set to produce, with Brian Lynch writing the script.
If Brian Lynch sounds like a familiar name, you might recognize it from the credits for "Puss in Boots," the "Secret Life of Pets" movies, and both "Minions" and "Minions: The Rise of Gru." All signs seem to confirm that this new dinosaur superhero film will be for children first and foremost,...

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has everything you could ask for from an animated Oscar contender, including sterling reviews, stellar box office and a proven awards track record. There’s one potential hitch, though: it’s a sequel. In the history of Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, only two sequels have ever won, and they were both from the “Toy Story” franchise: “Toy Story 3” (2010) and “Toy Story 4” (2019). Can “Across the Spider-Verse” achieve the same rare feat?

The following 12 sequels have been nominated for Best Animated Feature, with the only two winners highlighted in gold:

2011: “Puss in Boots”
2013: “Despicable Me 2”

January is generally a quiet time at the box office as studios give their big Holiday hits some breathing room while also avoiding the massive draw that is the NFL playoffs. Last year at this time, the record breaking Avatar: The Way of Water was still riding high with a $20.1 million take in its sixth week while Puss in Boots: The Last Wish continued its epic run from a $12 million opening to a $186 million domestic finish. We even had a surprise horror hit with M3GAN entering her third week with just under $10 million while the Tom Hanks starring A Man Called Otto continued to see solid numbers for a drama aimed at adults.
This year sees this third weekend of January hit a bit of a snag with the remake/ Broadway adaptation Mean Girls landing in first place for a second week in a row with $11.7 million. That number represents a 59% drop off,...

For the past seven years, Netflix has been gradually releasing a collection of interactive, choose-your-own-story games within the Netflix Ui, known as Interactive Specials. According to a recent report, we may not see many more of these, if any, in the future.
Netflix began rolling out this feature in 2017, and to date, 28 of them have been released, with the majority targeting family-oriented audiences. IP such as Carmen Sandiego, The Boss Baby, Barbie, Johnny Test, and Jurassic World have all featured interactive specials, along with Netflix’s own array of shows receiving this treatment, including Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and We Lost Our Human.
Black Mirror: Bandersnatch was undoubtedly a major breakthrough for this technology, targeting adults and pushing the feature to its limits with numerous branching storylines. The last major interactive movie came over the summer in the form of Choose Love, a rom-com starring Laura Marano, Avan Jogia,...
