(at around 18 mins) When Caleb first removes the numbers from the envelope, we see the end of the sequence of numbers. The final two numbers on the page are clearly threes (rounded on the right edge), not the backwards E's seen in the rest of the film.
(at around 55 mins) While John is looking up the location of the New York disaster, the paper clearly shows "10 7 09 178" followed by the long/lat info. The disaster is supposed to occur on 10 17 09.
When John swings the bat at the tree you can see the bat broke in half briefly as he brings it back up but in the next scene it is whole.
(at around 38 mins) When they first spot Flight 74, John and the state police officer are both looking back along the centerline of the highway - 90 degrees from the jet's actual line of flight, which crosses the highway at a right angle. At the beginning of the next shot, when the jet appears in frame, John's head is turned 90 degrees to the right.
In the opening classroom sequence, the clock on the wall behind the teacher remains at 1:10 throughout the majority of the scene, despite the obvious passage of time. The next time the clock is seen the hands have jumped to 3:00.
When the police and teachers go searching for Lucinda in the school at night, they all use flashlights. They could have easily put the lights on instead, as nothing indicates a power outage.
(at around 1h 30 mins) When the emergency alert comes on at the convenience store, three short warbling beeps are heard as the message begins. These tones are encoded messages to broadcasters regarding the message enclosed in the emergency alert; however, the short tones heard in the film indicate the end of an emergency alert, not the beginning of one. Opening tones are much longer.
The degrees are shown to just hundredths. A hundredth of a degree is more than half a mile. John would certainly have known he couldn't pinpoint a street intersection with just that data.
When John looks up the information about the 9/11 attack, the page says 'In memory of the 2996 lives that were lost that day'. The 9/11 attacks claimed 2977 victims. The number 2996 comes from adding in the 19 terrorist hijackers, something a memorial page would not do.
(at around 1h 11 mins) In Lucinda's house in the woods are newspaper articles attached to the walls, depicting past tragedies. The last one tells of a mine collapse in East Germany that killed 238 people. It was supposed to have happened in Luisenthal. The incident did actually happen, but Luisenthal is in Saarland, which is the most western part of Germany, which back then was a different country. Also the number of people who tragically died was higher, amounting to 299 persons dead.
(at around 1h 30 mins) Towards end of the movie when the cell phones are not working, Caleb calls his dad, John, from a payphone at the gas station and John answers his cell phone. However, Caleb calls John at night, while the solar interference happened in the daytime. There would have been less interference at night.
Lucinda's first set of numbers predict a disaster on February 12, 1959. The time capsule is buried on October 13, 1959, which means it had already happened. It's likely the "Whisperers" included this disaster as a way to identify what the numbers meant to those who would remember the then-recent incident, similar to the way John ultimately recognizes the 9/11 sequence.
(at around 1h 30 mins) When Diana is driving away from John (and toward the caves) she tries to call John on her cell phone. It says "no service" when it clearly has all bars of signal strength. However, while the cell phone has full bars, the network may be jammed, on certain carriers the bars turn to a different color when this happens but remain at full strength.
After the whisperers "kidnap" the kids at the gas station, Diana takes someone else's car and after a while crash happens. It's illogical that John found her in the instant; he didn't know what car she was driving after the children were taken.
-- Except that John drove in the direction indicated by the gas station employee, and shortly came upon the same intersection the major car accident had occurred, which was hard to miss. He pulled up to the scene of the accident and discovered Diana was the victim.
(at around 18 mins) When the fifty-year-old time capsule is opened, the envelopes are handed out to the elementary school students. The envelopes and paper inside them may appear as though they are new, but they have been sealed in an air-tight container that would vastly limit the degradation of the paper inside.
(at around 38 mins) The windscreen wipers on most of the vehicles caught in the traffic jam on the freeway before the plane crashes are sweeping the windscreens as they would on right hand drive cars (as in Australia), that is from right to left as seen from the front of the vehicle. The windscreen wipers on left hand drive cars (as in the U.S.A.) sweep the opposite direction.
(at around 13 mins) In Dr. John Koestler's classroom scene, camera movement shows chalkboard writing not moving in sync with surrounding chalkboard smudges, which is highly suggestive that the writing was added in post-production.
When John first looks up the 9/11 incident, he is shown just typing three characters (presumably 911), no specific website address, and it somehow takes him to a specific website that just happens to have the relevant information on its main page.
Right after the subway crash sequence, the camera moves up into a wide shot. You can clearly see that the fire engine is shaking because the tracking of the digital truck does not fit perfectly.
(at around 58 mins) When John goes down into the subway station in NYC at Worth and Lafayette, there are apparently lengthy escalators. Other than in the WTC itself going down to the PATH trains to NJ, there are no escalators than long in that area.
In the subway crash, the train takes out a large number of pillars. In a real subway station, they would have substantial concrete or steel girders inside them. Subway trains, however, are thin-walled structures, with the only real strength being in the bogies underneath. It's just not realistic; the train should rip apart or fold around the first pillar it meets. And, with all those pillars removed, why doesn't the ceiling collapse?
The fifth flag in the 1959 classroom is not Russian flag, but flag of the People's Republic of Bulgaria with white, green and red colors with small coat of arms in the left upper corner. That's why it is between Brazil's (B) and China's (C) flag.
When John is stopped in traffic, gets out of his truck and approaches the Policeman to ask what is wrong the Policeman looks in the distance in fright at the approaching Jet going down. His gaze however is not in the direction of where the plane at that time actually is.
In 1959, some 50-star flags are seen. The 50-star flag was not introduced until July 4, 1960. The scene should have used the short-lived 49-star flag of 1959-60, although most people didn't replace their 48-star flags until the 50-star flag came out.
(at around 5 mins) During the search of the 1959 elementary school for the lost Lucinda, modern fluorescent light fixtures can be seen.
(at around 2 mins) In the 1959 classroom scene, there are a number of flags above the chalkboard, where the white-blue-red Russian flag (used by the pre-1917 Russian Empire and post-1993 Russian Federation) can be seen amongst them. In 1959, Russia was the U.S.S.R. which used the yellow hammer and sickle on a red flag.
A New York City subway operator is seen wearing an MTA logo on his uniform, of a kind discarded since 1994.
The 1992-1997 Ford Crown Victoria taxi in the beginning of the NYC scene is too old to be a taxi as regulations require newer vehicles to be used as taxis.
At 21:45 into the film John is watching a TiVo recording on T.V., he the goes to pour more alcohol into his glass. As he's doing that he isn't paying attention and over fills his glass and spills his drink. the noise it makes sounds like the liquid hits a hard surface (like hardwood flooring) but the next scene clearly shows him spilling it over an area rug.
After the spaceship departs with the children on board, and the rocks fall back to Earth, the lighting used to illustrate the area where John is standing fades out, but one in-ground light (at Nicholas Cage's 7 o'clock) stays lit, bouncing off a single rock at full intensity, instead of going out.
When John goes after the whisper person there is a split second before he goes into the cornfield where you can see Caleb was replaced with a mannequin head in the car.
When John first sees the pattern on the paper, it is the 0911012996 that catches his eye. This would be incorrect because 2,996 was the total deaths on September 11 from all 3 locations (New York, Pentagon, and United 93) yet the paper gives GPS coordinates for individual locations.
(at around 55 mins) When John enters the coordinates of the impending NYC disaster in Google Maps he enters the longitude without a negative sign, which should have brought up a map in the eastern hemisphere.
(at around 1h 30 mins) The gas station has gas pumps unlike anything found in the USA, and a sign that says "Ice Cold Beer." In Massachusetts gas stations are not allowed to sell beer.
When John and Diana are sitting and talking at their table at the rooftop café, traffic in the background can be seen driving on the left as it does in Australia where the scene was filmed.
The NYC subway station (filmed in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) has an interior, cars, and a painted plywood sign unlike anything in New York. After the subway accident, there are types of fire trucks that are not used by the New York City Fire Department.
At 1 hour 30 minutes, after John went back to the school looking for the last of the numbers on the back of the door. John says the numbers are the key to everything and that the girl (Abby) was interrupted, but in the very previous scene, he stopped Caleb from frantically writing the numbers down. He should have just let his son finish writing the numbers and he would not have needed to go to find them on the back of the door at the school.
The latitudes and longitudes in Lucinda's letter do not specify whether they are North, South, East or West, but John assumes they are North and West. The numbers alone could each refer to any one of four spots in the world, but this vagueness is never addressed.
The time capsule was apparently sealed only with a screw-on lid and was just placed in a hole in the ground, left uncovered and unsealed except for a manhole which was itself unsealed (and manhole keys are held by just about every construction and utility company, no matter how small they are). While we, the viewers, know the number sequence to have genuinely been put in by Lucinda, 50 years ago, to any of the characters in the movie it should seem like an obvious hoax made after the "future date" disasters happening. That John, someone who apparently does not believe in determinism, is so readily convinced that the paper was written 50 years ago seems more than a little implausible.
The Lat/Lon (Latitude/Longitude) numbers are limited to two decimal places. That is insufficient for precisely specifying locations for some of the event locations as shown by the time capsule numbers, but also matches too conveniently with John's car navigation system.
The dates, number of casualties, and locations of all of the many thousands and thousands of natural disasters that have occurred between 1959 and 2009 on Earth could not fit on a single piece of paper, especially if they include comparatively minor disasters such as train and plane crashes.
In John's lecture on Determinism/Randomness, what he's actually describing are (anthropic) teleologism and metaphysical naturalism - both descriptions being causally deterministic. Only when questioned what he believes does he describe a random element.
(at around 13 mins) In John's lecture on Determinism/Randomness,the word "intergrate!" is written on the chalkboard, which is spelled incorrectly.
The main character is supposed to be an astrophysicist. He says that Earth-like planets will only be found around Earth-like stars, which is not the current belief.
When Diana refers to "Caves off Route 40 past Groton", this isn't possible. Route 40 ends in Groton center.
In John's lecture on Determinism/Randomness, the detailed blackboard derivation involving one of Maxwell's equations is out of place for the discussion topic.
