The After Dark Horrorfest was a game-changer back when it premiered in 2006. Not only was this film festival devoted to the horror genre, it was accessible. Founder Courtney Solomon (An American Haunting) chose the best possible venue for this “ultimate celebration of horror”: the big screen. So from November 17 to 21, these hand-picked titles were shown at select theaters across the U.S.
There have been four “sequels” to the After Dark Horrorfest since then, but for many horror hounds like myself, the original one is a bit more meaningful. It was an exciting time for discovery, developing one’s own taste, and for learning what the genre had to offer in the non-mainstream sector.
So in honor of this momentous film fest, we look back at the first “8 Films to Die For”.

Director Ridley Scott has been having a field day during the press tour for "Napoleon," his latest blockbuster epic starring Joaquin Phoenix, generally telling every historian within earshot to shove it whenever someone points out a historical inaccuracy in his film. And quite frankly, he has the right. At 85 years old, with more than a few masterpieces under his belt, Scott should be allowed to make the movies he wants to make, and adjust the facts to fit his vision as much as he wants. Especially when the quotes about his process have proven so dang entertaining. Go off, king.
But this is the part where I invite Scott to narrow his gaze at me, and practically beg him to tell me to get f*cked. Because I've spent the past few months reading "Napoleon: A Life" by Andrew Roberts, the 2015 biography that spans over 900 pages and utilizes tens of...

For a horror fan, the month of October is naturally designated for everything related to Halloween. So this month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies that take place on or around October 31st. As usual, though, these selections can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s Halloween-themed offerings include zombies, witchcraft, killers, and more.
The Midnight Hour (1985)
Image: The Midnight Club (1985)
Directed by Jack Bender.
The Midnight Hour is a great warm-up for the Halloween season, right before diving into heavier or scarier movies. This telefilm originally aired on ABC, then later showed up on cable. While it didn’t open to rave reviews, it has certainly found an audience over the years. The plot is simple enough: teens fool around with magic and accidentally raise an evil sorceress on Halloween. As the night goes on, the town is taken over by ghouls and monsters.

Exclusive: Regal Cinemas will release Craig Singer’s independent film 6:45 exclusively in theaters in the U.S. and Canada on August 6
The director and former Disney creative executive Singer said the agreement marks the first time since the pandemic that the nation’s second largest chain has supported an independent horror release.
“As the country comes out of the pandemic, we can all use an escape from reality, and nothing does that quite like the movies. We’re thrilled that Regal will be distributing 6:45, giving [it] widest possible audience,” said Singer.
“There is only one way to truly enjoy a horror movie and that is on the big screen,” said Rob Westerling, Regal’s head film buyer. “Through our partnership with Cascrator Film & Media [Singer’s production company], we are excited to bring our guests the psychological thriller 6:45. This...

Halloween is right around the corner. The season for creepy costumes, pumpkin carving, and candy collecting is nigh. Above all, it’s the season for haunted hayrides, menacing mazes, eerie escape rooms, and spooky spectacles. These attractions are more popular now than ever. Forbes reported on the numbers: Halloween spending reached $8.4 billion in 2016, and it was estimated to reach $9.1 billion last year, so the timing is perfect for a big-screen horror film that’s set almost entirely in an amusement park on All Hallows’ Eve.
Hell Fest falls back on a familiar formula: put archetypal, good-looking young people in peril on a dark night and let the body count commence. The “Hell Fest” of the title is a traveling carnival that features a labyrinth of horror-themed rides, diversions, and themed rooms, and attracts thousands of fans wherever it goes. Thus far the pictures in this years 8 Films to Die For look mighty promising. Suspension may actually have the most potential. Weve got a new killer on deck and he looks pretty bad ass (and a little similar to the antagonist in Dark Ride) factor in a cool comic angle and an examination of teenage life and what youre faced with is a piece of work that has all the potential to be genius. Of course well have to wait to find out whether the flick can live up to its promise as these movies wont be headed our way until the Halloween season arrives.

The King is dead. Long live the King.
I couldn’t help it: I thought of Elvis.
It’s not the first time when reading The Sandman that Elvis came to mind, but it was the most instinctive and in some ways the least appropriate such moment. We’re at the end of the wake for Morpheus and Matthew says to the new Dream, “Just remember what the French say. No, probably not the French, they’ve got a president or something. The Brits, maybe. Or the Swedes. You know the one I mean?” Dream does not. Matthew says, “The King is dead. Long live the King.”
And my free-associating brain did its annoying thing of sending out random names and words: “Elvis!” it screamed into my consciousness.
Not quite a random name, of course. Elvis was, after all, called The King. I don’t really care about Elvis, though.

What will February bring to Netflix? "House of Cards" returns for its much awaited third season, but not until Feb. 27. If you can't wait for your Kevin Spacey fix until then, "Now: In the Wings on a World Stage" (2014), a documentary of Spacey starring in a production of Shakespeare's "Richard III," is available on Feb. 1.
And the 2004 "King Arthur," starring Clive Owen and Keira Knightley, isn't exactly Shakespearean, but look at how many great actors -- like Mads Mikkelsen, Ioan Gruffudd, Hugh Dancy and Joel Edgerton -- have gone on to much bigger things.
You can also stream "Joe," one of Nicolas Cage's best films in recent years; the overlooked indie "The Brothers Bloom" with Mark Ruffalo, Adrien Brody and Rachel Weisz; and the barely-in-theaters thriller "The Two Faces of January," starring Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst.

Netflix has just released their lists of what films and TV shows we will see added in February…and what films and TV shows will vanish.
First, the good news: quite a few classic and popular TV shows are making the grade on the streaming service, including the first five seasons of Mash, Hawaii 5-0, and the new season of House of Cards. New additions to the film list include RoboCop, The Brothers Bloom, and Gimme Shelter. While there’s not a lot of quality stuff on offer, there are at least a few new films and TV shows that we can enjoy on the Netflix streaming service.
Now for the bad news: quite a number of favorites are going to vanish from Netflix come February 1. Among these are several James Bond films, Zodiac, Jane Eyre, and Dredd. The TV shows fare even worse, with tons of BBC shows expiring,...

It's not quite the end to another month, although we're just 11 days away; it's also a time when Netflix releases its latest list of films and TV shows coming to the streaming service the following month, which will be February this time around. Other than the upcoming 3rd season of "House of Cards," I can't say there's much else here to get excited about - at least for me to get excited about. You might feel differently. Below, you'll find the list of films coming to Netflix in the month of February: Feb. 1 "Bleach the Movie: Hell Verse" "Dark Ride" "Departures: Season 12" "Gimme Shelter" "Gucci: The...

Earlier this month Paramount announced the creation of a new theme park with BBC Worldwide involvement. Based in Kent and opening around 2020, the idea is that it will utilise some of the BBC’s most popular shows and characters including Sherlock, Top Gear and, of course, Doctor Who?
Naturally fans up and down the country got a little excited at the prospect – a Doctor Who theme park!? – as it’s never been done before. What would it be like? What could be there? With the rumour mill already in overdrive about a potential Doctor Who-themed Dark Ride opening at Thorpe Park in 2016 (not confirmed, just very heavily rumoured), this announcement was pretty exciting indeed. Doctor Who rollercoasters? Actual Whovian rides? New attractions?
The truth is, Whovians are spoilt. There’s the fantastic Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff, an interactive museum of sorts incorporating set and walking tours, there’s...

Killer Holiday could have delivered some good fun despite the shitty screenplay. It could have been a selfaware production that knows it isnt worth attempting to sell with a serious disclaimer. In fact if youre looking for a somewhat analogous picture (this one actually rips off quite a few flicks including the most obvious Saw thievery shot Ive ever seen) that recognizes its general feebleness and embraces it rather than attempting to mask it check out Dark Ride. Its basically Killer Holiday with a far more believable cast far fewer pointless twists a menace that actually frightens and a couple characters you can actually get behind. Its goofy as all hell but its supposed to be goofy because the concept itself is just a...

Most horror films have a jokester, prankster, or trickster in them. Sometimes he or she is a disposable character who dies a gruesome death in the first half of the film; sometimes the role is fulfilled by the lead or main supporting character. Whether they live or die, the jokester is almost always responsible for breaking up the tense atmosphere with well-timed pranks, tricks, or smart-assery. Writers and directors have recognized the need for comic relief since the dawn of film, but it seems that the jokester role in horror has become more finely tuned over the last few decades. So for your reading pleasure, we bring to you nine of the most memorable jokesters in horror cinema... Marty – The Cabin in the Woods Marty (Fran Kranz) is the quintessential silver screen stoner, and represents almost every character that’s ever sparked up a joint in a horror film, but...

Last year we ran a schedule of every TV/Cable network schedule we could find that could be construed as Horror or Halloween related for the month of October. Let’s just say it proved useful for our readers and even for our staff when they were looking to find something to watch, wanted to program their DVR’s or didn’t want to miss out on some great “live” Horror. Isn’t there something about having a movie fed to you on TV as opposed to watching it on Blu-ray or DVD or streaming? We may not like commercials, but the randomness that you can associate with a TV program itinerary is novel. It removes a little bit of control from the audience who is all to concerned with being in control these days (just look at the reasons behind publishing a piece like this).

So they say "She's Better Now." But, we don't really believe that... do we?
Regardless of whether or not Mona's cured (or if she was ever crazy at all), she is baaaack. I just wish her return wasn't in one of the most dull episodes of Pretty Little Liars Season 3. Despite all the drama and excitement drummed up by this year's Halloween episode, "This is a Dark Ride," can we all agree this return was rather boring?
Mona's back in Rosewood after a little stint in the nuthouse, but as Pretty Little Liars fans already know, this isn't her first outing. She's escaped a few times to do some A business, most recently on the Halloween train ride from hell. But she's back (from outer-space) to show the whole town of Rosewood she can survive being branded a psycho. But, obviously that's not all.

And in out first clip from the return episode, we see a very angry Aria, peeved over Garrett's story of her dad being with Alison the night she died.
What else do we witness? The return of Mona to school! Watch both these events collide in the following sneak peek:

Welcome to a super special haunted Halloween version of the Pretty Little Liars Round Table!
There were costumes, there was murder, there were ghosts and there was Adam Lambert (what?!) on last night's "This is a Dark Ride," as staff writers Leigh Raines, Nick McHatton, Teresa Lopez and Carissa Pavlica gather around below to discuss the latest Pll-based thrills and chills...
-------------------------------------------
Who would have won the best costume contest?
Leigh: Spencer and Toby for Bonnie and Clyde, purely for the irony that Spencer is actually dating the bad guy.
Nick: Well, I was wishing Noel had decided it was a Toga party, but since that didn't happen I really dug what Spencer and Toby had going on.
Teresa: Definitely Emily. I'm kind of a sci-fi geek, so I enjoyed the authenticity of her Barbarella getup.
Carissa: I liked Caleb's choice because his was the one that could have been anyone.

Trick or treat? When it comes to Pretty Little Liars highly anticipated Halloween special "This Is a Dark Ride," airing tonight at 8 p.m., we're pretty sure viewers are in for both. While the ABC Family series will surely provide us with crazy costumes and cute couple moments, we're positive the show will also throw us some crazy plot twists, cliffhangers, and oh yeah, a major death! We chatted with Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell about tonight's spooky outing, the fallout from the big Toby (Keegan Allen) twist and what's next for Emily and Paige (Lindsey Shaw)... Of course, the girls start off the Halloween special, which Mitchell calls "one of her favorite" episodes,...

The Halloween special of Pretty Little Liars is on the way, and you probably don’t want to miss something that puts “A” together with Halloween.
It isn’t a lot of notice, but here’s a preview of the episode.
“This Is a Dark Ride” – Aria, Emily, Hanna and Spencer are looking forward to some good old Halloween fun now that the traumatic events with Nate are behind them. But once aboard the Rosewood Ghost Train, the girls are in for much more than just some childish trick or treats. With “A” running amuck and unexpected party-goers popping up at every turn, this Halloween event becomes one killer party, in “This Is a Dark Ride,” a special Halloween-themed episode of ABC Family‘s hit original series “Pretty Little Liars,” airing Tuesday, October 23rd (8:00 – 9:00 Pm Et/Pt), as part of ABC Family’s “13 Nights of Halloween” programming event.

'A' has the residents of Rosewood in his/her/their crosshairs! Which of these 13 potential victims will bite the bullet? It sounds like "A" is opting for more tricks than treats on the Oct. 23 Halloween special of Pretty Little Liars, titled "This Is A Dark Ride," as ABC Family revealed today that one the show's main characters will be killed off! And in keeping with the episode's spooky theme, the network has narrowed down the list of potential victims to 13. Find out who could be on the chopping block! 1. Aria (Lucy Hale) 2. Hanna (Ashley Benson) 3. Spencer (Troian Bellisario) 4. Emily (Shay Mitchell) 5. Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) 6. Ezra (Ian Harding) 7. Jason (Drew Van Acker) 8. Jenna (Tammin Sursok) 9. Noel (Brant Daugherty) 10. Lucas (Brendan Robinson) 11. Paige (Lindsey Shaw) 12. Toby (Keegan Allen) 13. Garrett (Yani Gellman) While it's safe to assume the four mail liars will survive their trip on the "A" train, everyone else is fair game.

While I'm about 95% sure that the last place you want to be on Halloween is in Rosewood—you know, being that it's a certified crazy town full of mass murderers in American Apparel hoodies— the four leading ladies of Pretty Little Liars seems to think that getting the hell out of town would just be too easy (like, that seems way too difficult and they'd rather get their heads chopped off by Toby). So as Hanna, Spencer, Aria, and Emily get all dolled up for a certain night of horror for "This Is A Dark Ride", does the fact that Mona has dastardly plans of her own honestly surprise you? Let's watch a spoiler clip of her talkin' all crazy and get spooked out:

Pretty Little Liars is coming back to ABC Family for more, and at full-strength, getting a full 24-episode order set to kick off at some point in the middle of next year. Of course, you have more Lucy Hale, Ashley Benson, Troian Bellisario, and Shay Mitchell coming you way this year to complete season 3, with Pretty Little Liars returning on October 23rd for a Halloween special called, “This Is a Dark Ride“.
That’s right, that means you will hardly be without Aria, Hanna, Spencer and Emily, the Pretty Little Liar A Team, for the foreseeable future, with the rest of season 3 picking up early next year after the Halloween special and leading into season 4. The girls just have 2013 on lock.
Speaking of Pretty Little Liars, fans will also be able to catch one of the show’s family, Jackie Molina, on another show this month, as Paloma Guzman will...

Halloween is coming up on ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars, which this year means one thing: a spook-filled ride for ‘A’ & Co. on the Rosewood Ghost Train.
The special standalone installment (airing Oct. 23, 8/7c) finds Aria, Spencer, Hanna and Emily, having finally put Nate’s recent reign of terror behind them, celebrating the holiday in adorably costumed-style. The four friends, however, have no idea what (creepy stalkers in babydoll masks) and who (evil Toby?) awaits them on the nightmarish train of terror.
