Jurnee Smollett (“Lovecraft Country”) has joined the cast of Apple TV+’s “Firebug,” in which she’ll star opposite Taron Egerton. Smollett will play Michelle, a “rising star detective.”

Lehane also developed and executive produces “Firebug,” which reps a reunion of the team behind Apple TV+’s “Black Bird.” Other exec producers include Richard Plepler (via Eden Productions), Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas (through Imperative Entertainment), and Kary Antholis.

Westworld season 4 is set to premiere June 26 on both HBO and HBO Max. What will this season of the increasingly confusing sci-fi drama be about? Per HBO’s synopsis it will be “A dark odyssey about the fate of sentient life on earth.” So you know, only that.
Irma Vep is the only other Max Original of note this month. Based on a 1996 cult classic of the same name, this limited series stars Alicia Vikander as a disillusioned movie star looking to remake the early 20th century French silent film serial Les Vampires.

Exclusive: FX’s Mayans M.C. is patching in Frankie Loyal, Joseph Lucero, and Vincent Vargas as series regulars for season 4 of the biker drama slated to return in early 2022.
The trio took on larger roles in season 3 which saw their characters Hank Loza, Neron “Creeper” Vargas, and Gilly Lopez, respectively, flourish and develop into fully rounded characters with storylines fans embraced fully. Loyal, Lucero, and Vargas have been a part of the series throughout its three-season run.
Mayans M.C., a spin-off series of the network’s hit Sons of Anarchy, follows a motley crew of Latino men who found a family in the motorcycle club charter Santo Padre on the California and Mexico border. While the story is about the M.C., it also features powerful female characters that are bold and powerful in their own right.

Vin Diesel and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s feud during the making of several “Fast and Furious” films has been well documented (and immortalized by The Rock calling out a “chicken shit” and “candy ass” co-star on social media), and now Diesel is owning up to the part he played in stirring up the set tension. It’s just not in the way you might think. As part of a new Men’s Health profile (via Uproxx), the “Fast” actor and producer said the “tough love” he gave The Rock in trying to get a great performance out of him is what led to the reported tension.
“It was a tough character to embody, the Hobbs character,” Diesel said. “My approach at the time was a lot of tough love to assist in getting that performance where it needed to be. As a producer to say, ‘Okay, we’re going to take Dwayne Johnson,...

Today is March 1st, which means we have a whole new set of titles to tell you about that just dropped on Netflix. The streaming service has 54 new movies/TV shows from nearly every major studio, including Warner Bros., Paramount and Sony, and while that number is still ten less than what we got last March, there’s far more original content on the service than there was a year ago. So, trust me when I say you’ve got plenty of options.
So many options, in fact, that I often find myself browsing for so long that I can’t decide on what to watch until it gets too late and I go to bed instead. First world problems, right?
In any case, below you’ll find the full list as well as a few descriptions of some personal favorites. Or some that I just felt like commenting on.

We have a list of the new Hulu movies and shows arriving in March 2020.
March sees the beginning of one of TV's more interesting experiment in 2020. Hulu's new releases for March 2020 are highlighted by the launch of the torturously-named "FX on Hulu" in which certain FX shows will premiere exclusively on Hulu.
Yes, when Disney set out up the entertainment industry, it gained more brands than it knew what to do with. And that's how you get stuff like FX on Hulu. The streaming/cable hybrid begins in earnest in March with two series, Alex Garland's sci-fi Devs and the weird Lil Dickey comedy Dave. More FX on Hulu is set to arrive in April as well.
Hulu's only $5.99/month now, grab the deal here!

Adam Sandler has taken home the 2020 Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead thanks to his critically acclaimed performance in Josh and Benny Safdie’s “Uncut Gems.” Sandler earned the best reviews of his career for his performance as Howard Ratner, a self-destructive New York City gambler whose escalating addiction to gambling derails his personal and professional career. The Spirit Award victory gives Sandler his second major Best Actor prize of the 2019-20 awards season. Sandler previously won Best Actor at the National Board of Review awards. Sandler won the Spirit Award over fellow 2020 nominees Chris Galust (“Give Me Liberty”), Kelvin Harrison Jr. (“Luce”), Robert Pattinson (“The Lighthouse”), and Matthias Schoenaerts (“The Mustang”).
Despite the Spirit Awards prize, Adam Sandler will not be repeating his victory at the 92nd Academy Awards as he was shut out of the race in favor of nominees Antonio Banderas (“Pain and Glory”), Leonardo DiCaprio...

The Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday afternoon in Santa Monica got a pep in its step when the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles took to the stage inside of the tent and delivered what can only be described as a totally epic and hilarious tribute to the gayest moments in film of 2019. That culminated in an ode to “Marriage Story” Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee and all-around screen icon Laura Dern. Count “Laura Dern ordering a kale salad” and “Laura Dern dressed slutty in court” — referring to her lurid performance as hotshot lawyer Nora Fanshaw in “Marriage Story” — among 2019’s gayest movie moments. Watch the video below.

The 2020 Film Independent Spirit Awards is set to honor the best in independent cinema, from Oscar contenders like Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” to beloved indie darlings such as Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell,” the Safdie brothers’ “Uncut Gems,” Robert Eggers’ “The Lighthouse,” and Joe Talbot’s “The Last Black Man in San Francisco.” A24 leads all studios at the Indie Spirit Awards this year with 18 nominations, which differs from tomorrow’s Academy Awards where Netflix is the most-nominated studio. The Spirit Awards have become known over the last decade for showcasing nominees that are a mix of underdog films and higher-profile awards contenders, and the 2020 ceremony will be no exception. The Spirit Awards are a welcome opportunity for great films overlooked by the Oscars to have a moment in the awards season spotlight.

As time marches on and tedium vitae sets in more and more with each passing day, we find ourselves with fewer ways to distract ourselves from the encroaching existential malaise. But wait — what’s that you say? All three “Cruel Intentions” movies are coming to Netflix next month? Maybe it’s not so bad after all.

Like most famous people, Dwayne Johnson’s Wikipedia page includes a nifty sidebar that includes bare bones facts, like birthday and age, with a couple of lines reserved for “occupation.” Johnson’s “occupation” line is almost amusingly slim — it simply reads, “Actor, producer, singer, professional wrestler,” which is an understated way of saying “this guy does a lot.” And it doesn’t even mention his best-selling memoir, or his charity work, and “professional wrestler” hardly indicates the tremendous success he’s had in the ring.
And “actor”? That’s a very concise tribute to his blockbuster career on the big screen, one that’s amounted to dozens of credits and an estimated lifetime box office gross (domestic only!) that totals over $2.7 billion. With Johnson toplining the early summer’s biggest hit so far, the box office-dominating “Fate of the Furious” and a non-stop barrage of other features on the way,...

Image Source: Getty / Aaron Davidson Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was a big part of my childhood. I've watched him wrestle on WWE since I was 8 years old; while my father and I were never close, sitting on the couch and watching Raw and Smackdown was one of the things we did together, and I looked forward to it every week. Dwayne was recently crowned People's Sexiest Man Alive, and while it makes me so proud to see how far he's come in his career, the coveted honor means so much more given all the trials and tribulations he's overcome in his life. Not only does his win bring back a special pastime between my dad and I, but the half-Samoan and half-black actor is the first person of color to earn the title in 20 years (Denzel Washington was named in 1996) - and while that's a huge feat in itself, the...

Kevin Spacey, Steven Seagal and, erm, Kangaroo Jack: they all nabbed the box office top spot last decade...
By the end of the 2000s, getting number one at the American box office was a valuable marketing commodity. As such, studios pumped more and more money into making sure they at least had a great opening weekend for their product.
The consequence of this was that it was harder and harder for smaller and quirkier films to take a brief spot in the sun. Certainly towards the second half of the decade, it seems that the number one movie each week was pre-ordinained in a marketing meeting somewhere.
Still, there were some films that have since fallen out of public view that clawed their way to number one. How many of these do you remember?

The single biggest flaw within director Brett Ratner’s vision of Hercules is one that came from a self-conscious decision to create a Hercules story that is grounded in reality. While that is an interesting concept, the frustration comes from the fact that the movie was marketed as a fantasy inspired adventure where the titular character completes the Twelve Labors. Instead, what we got is a movie that not only rushes through those trials and tribulations in a five minute montage opening sequence, but one that attempts to debunk every piece of mythology as the film goes on.
This means that the remaining 90 minutes or so are a painfully generic narrative about Hercules and his friends as a group of mercenaries for hire. Not exactly the kind of Hercules movie I imagine people wanted to see, especially when it stars Dwayne Johnson as the mythical demigod; a man who truly...

The 2014/2015 NFL season is well under way, with some teams already looking like genuine Super Bowl contenders and others looking so bad they seem to be playing a different sport entirely.
With the time difference between the UK and Us meaning that most games don't kick-off until the evening hours over here, there's plenty of time to kill on Sundays waiting for the matches to start. Digital Spy picks out nine American football-based movies to pass the time on Sundays and get in the mood for the real thing...
1. Friday Night Lights (2004)
Based on the book of the same name (the TV series came later), Friday Night Lights tells the story of a high school American football outfit struggling to be the best they can be under the extreme pressure of expectation placed on them by the small Texan community they represent.

No Good Deed easily took first place ahead of Dolphin Tale 2 on another quiet weekend at the domestic box office.Playing at 2,175 locations, the Screen Gems thriller opened to an estimated $24.25 million. That's in the same general range as 2009's Obsessed ($28.6 million), which shared a producer (Will Packer) and star (Idris Elba) with No Good Deed. More impressively, it debuted significantly higher than last year's The Call ($17.1 million), which was also a Sony thriller featuring a female protagonist in a confined location. No Good Deed managed to successfully combine a few key ingredients. First, and most importantly, it was well-positioned within the perennially successful home invasion subgenre. These movies manage to tap in to one of our most common fears (harm to our home/family), while also promising an element of wish fulfillment (taking control and fighting back against these invaders). Another key element to its success was its...

It's a cliche: before, during or after the big game, the sports team gathers in the locker room, usually when things look the absolute worst. And then someone (usually the coach) steps forward and says something that changes everything. The change isn't just in the characters on-screen… it's in you, watching from the comfort of your living room. Suddenly, you feel like you can take on the world! Congrats, you've fell for a Motivational Locker Room Speech and you're not alone. These are the best of 'em. Gridiron Gang It's one thing when an old white guy tells you to play your heart out. But when Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson tells you? Ohhh, boy. Now that's proper motivation. He may appear fairly gentle in this scene, but...

With HBO.s True Detective currently winning over critics and audiences, along with Mitchell Altieri.s Holy Ghost People and Ti West.s The Sacrament's recent and upcoming releases, it.s clearly a popular time for religious cult thrillers. Jason Blum.s microbudget genre film mill Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures recently performed the ancient ritual to hop on that bandwagon with The Veil, and American Horror Story.s Lily Rabe is the latest to sign on, joining the previously cast Jessica Alba and Thomas Jane. This is excellent news, as Rabe was consistently one of the most enjoyable parts about these last two seasons of the FX anthology series. Directed by Gridiron Gang filmmaker Phil Joanou, The Veil has a foundation in the religious cult called Heaven.s Veil, whose members all simultaneously committed suicide decades ago. In the present day, a documentarian (Alba) wants to discover the...

(Cbr) Jessica Alba might be sticking around the Blumhouse. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress is circling the role of documentary filmmaker in "The Veil", alongside Thomas Jane. She worked with the micro-budget producers recently on "Stretch". Alba’s character films the lone survivor or a religious cult called Heaven’s Veil who returns to the site of their mass suicide. While recounting what happened to her when she was 5 years old, the now-grown survivor, Alba and their crew discover the truth might be even scarier than they originally thought. The film is directed by Phil Joanou who helmed "Gridiron Gang"...
