At the 2021 Comedy Central Roast of Bruce Willis, host Joseph Gordon-Levitt delivered this classic joke: "I loved 'The Sixth Sense.' It's a great movie. And the ending, I did not see that twist coming ... At the end of 'The Sixth Sense,' Bruce goes back to making sh***y movies."
It's funny because, well, it's sort of true: "The Sixth Sense" is widely considered one of the last truly good Bruce Willis movies. Sure, he gave some fun performances in "Lucky Number Slevin" and "Moonrise Kingdom," but the spooky 1999 M. Night Shyamalan drama was pretty much the last time Willis was the leading man in a massive critical and commercial hit.
On IMDb, "The Sixth Sense" has an 8.2 rating, ranking it 144th among the site's top 250 list of best-ranked movies. It's not a surprising placement, given how influential it became in pop culture. People were quoting "I...

For many moviegoers, there is pre- and post-Tarantino cinema. Before "Reservoir Dogs," movies couldn't be so brazenly self-referential up to the point that characters discussed pop culture like they were all the savviest kid in your friend circle. For those of us who wolfed down movies, music, books and the rest of it like a large deluxe pizza, early Tarantino validated our fixation; his successes made it seem possible for us to tell stories via our own referential patois. It sounds absurd now, but no one outside of scenarists like Daniel Waters and Shane Black dared to write like this.
Somewhere in between "Kill Bill" chapters, Hollywood types began wondering if Tarantino's style of filmmaking had pigeonholed him to the point of self-parody. Factor in the countless Tarantino wannabes that began sprouting up in the mid-1990s, and it felt like the most daring thing the filmmaker could do...

Spoilers for "Trap" follow.
One of the more surprising aspects of "Trap," M. Night Shyamalan's absurd new thriller, is how much of the movie is still left after Josh Hartnett's character (Cooper) escapes the titular trap. Even after he escapes the concert, after his serial killer identity is revealed to his family, after his attempt to capture Lady Raven fails, the movie keeps going. His last hurrah before the feds catch him for real is a quiet conversation with his wife Rachel (Alison Pill), in which they talk about how Rachel secretly sort of knew he was a serial killer the whole movie, and how Cooper is heartbroken by how his relationship with his kids has been permanently broken. Oh and also, Cooper takes off his shirt.
It's a sequence that's already gotten plenty of buzz online, mainly because Hartnett's been a decades-long Hollywood heartthrob. You might've thought...

Trap may not be Hartnett's best movie but it could still be profitable with its low production costs. Shyamalan's films tend to make money despite mixed reviews, with Split being a recent standout. Saleka Shyamalan debuts as Lady Raven in Trap, showcasing her real-life musical talent in the film.
Josh Hartnett stars in M. Night Shyamalan's new psychological horror thriller Trap, which was released in theaters on August 2, 2024. Being a superhero is probably a dream role for a lot of actors. After all, with huge universes like Marvel and DC, landing a part in one of their movies or shows can seriously boost an actor’s career. In other words, it’s kind of like hitting the jackpot.

But not everyone is on the same page. Take Josh Hartnett, for example. He’s so set on his stance that he actually turned down one of DC’s biggest roles — not once, but twice.

For years, Josh Hartnett was trapped in the dreamboat status of Hollywood. He tried to break free of it by taking on darker roles in films like “The Faculty” and “Black Hawk Down,” but his chiseled features made it hard for audiences to see past his good looks. In a recent interview with Variety, Hartnett addressed this challenge, saying his role in Michael Bay’s “Pearl Harbor” was the straw that finally broke the camel’s back.
“I was still trying to figure out who I was,” Hartnett said. “Something of that magnitude that everybody knew about and sort of thought of me as the character, had an effect on me that I kicked back against. It was always something that I had to contend with at that age, and I was still trying to figure out what I meant to myself and to people around me.”

Great movies shouldn't overlook the importance of a great title, as it acts as the introduction to the film and sets the tone for the audience. Some movie titles can confuse and complicate viewers' expectations, misleading them about the actual content and tone of the film. A good title should draw the audience in, hint at the movie's theme or tone, and give viewers a clear idea of what to expect without being awkward or difficult to pronounce.
Making a great movie requires just the right combination of elements, but unfortunately, finding a great title is often left out of the equation. The story needs to be interesting, the script needs to properly convey that story, and the actors need to bring that story to life. The wardrobe needs to fit, the lighting needs to work, and the score needs to complement the action on screen. The list goes on and on,...

Josh Hartnett's big return to Hollywood in 2023 is prefaced by his notable disappearance from the entertainment industry. Once referred to as the next Tom Cruise in the early 2000s, Hartnett walked away from his remarkable potential to become one of Hollywood's biggest stars throughout the 2010s. While Hartentt has kept his finger on the pulse and maintained relevancy in the acting world over the last two decades, 2023 brings him back to the spotlight in a major and nostalgic way.
Hartnett rose to fame as Jamie Lee Curtis's fictional son in Halloween H20: 20 Years Later in 1998. Hartnett became a Hollywood heartthrob from his performance as Trip Fontaine in The Virgin Suicides before appearing in blockbusters Pearl Harbor and Black Hawk Down. Written by showrunner Charlie Brooker and directed by BAFTA-winner John Crowley (Brooklyn), "Beyond the Sea" is set in an alternate version of 1969 and follows two men on a dangerous mission who must face an unimaginable disaster. Perhaps the most star-studded episode of Black Mirror season 6, "Beyond the Sea" is a perfect example of what makes the show so popular. Despite huge acclaim from critics, The Banshees of Inisherin may puzzle some fans with its odd title. Of course, this is not the first great movie that is somewhat challenged with a title that either confuses or fails to draw audiences.
Beloved classics like The Shawshank Redemption and underseen gems like Lucky Number Slevin are just some of the movies fans on Reddit have loved but that they admit could have chosen a better name. Whether it doesn't fit the story it tells or it is too strange to entice fans, these are some great movies with bad titles.
The Nice Guys (2016)
Shane Black is a master of the buddy-cop genre and he returned to this kind of story in The Nice Guys. Set in the 1970s, it follows an enforcer and a private eye who reluctantly team up to solve a missing person case.

The food-loving actor and author on playing an evil genius in Inside Man, the brilliance of Whitney Houston and running out of space for booze
The actor Stanley Tucci, 61, was born in Westchester, New York, to parents of Italian descent. His debut film role was in John Huston’s Prizzi’s Honor (1985). He later starred in The Devil Wears Prada, The Lovely Bones, Spotlight and The Hunger Games and has directed five films, including cult comedy Big Night. Tucci has also written two cookbooks and food memoir Taste and hosted the Emmy-winning culinary travel series Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy. He now stars in new BBC One drama Inside Man, written by Steven Moffat.
Were you a fan of Steven Moffat’s writing before signing up for Inside Man?
Very much. I adored Sherlock. Steven has a very dark sense of humour, as do I, so I was excited to read the Inside Man scripts.

If your summer holiday entertainment menu is in need of a colourful kick up the arse, Bullet Train comes barrelling into cinemas this week. The Japan-based comical caper – weaned on a diet of liquidised Guy Ritchie mockney monologues and lesser Statham Transporter fights – might be as woefully Westernised as its influences sound but there are worse ways to kill two hours.
Returning to his deadly day job after a period of self-reflection, Ladybug (Brad Pitt) is feeling ambivalent about the whole gun-for-hire biz. To the extent that he’s reluctant to pack a piece at all. But his honey-voiced handler Maria (Sandra Bullock) persuades him to step into the shoes of a colleague from the assassin community who is off sick with a dicky tummy. Board an iconic train, grab a case, deliver the case, and pocket the fee. How hard can the assignment be?
Double hard bastard hard, as it transpires.

Nehemiah Persoff, who appeared as Barbra Streisand’s rabbi father in “Yentl” and had roles in hundreds of films and TV series including “Some Like It Hot” and “Twins,” died Tuesday in San Luis Obispo, Calif. He was 102.
His death was confirmed by his daughter, Dahlia Reano. Beyond prolific, Persoff racked up almost 200 credits in film and TV in a career that began in the very earliest days of television.
Persoff broke through in the 1959 movie “Some Like It Hot,” in which he played mobster boss Little Bonaparte. (The actor had been the last surviving member of the cast.) Early in his career, he was known for playing villainous tough guys, such as in Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Wrong Man,” starring Henry Fonda, and “Al Capone,” starring Rod Steiger, in which he had a substantial role as Johnny Torrio, the mobster who mentored Capone only to be replaced by him.

This celebrated dysfunctional family story won four Oscars, the most deserved easily being Alvin Sargent’s superb adapted screenplay. The viewer buzz initially centered on the surprise of Mary Tyler Moore’s unexpected casting against type, but even more alarming was author Judith Guest’s scary message that ‘perfect’ families are an illusion. We found the drama absorbing and bought the performances 100 — Sutherland, Hirsch, Hutton, McGovern. It’s clearly Robert Redford’s best job of direction.

They’re set to star alongside previously announced cast members including Jamie Foxx, Tommy Lee Jones, Jurnee Smollett, Mamoudou Athie and Bill Camp.
Based on the New Yorker article by Jonathan Harr, The Burial follows a charismatic personal injury lawyer famous for his impressive track record and loudly unconventional approach who decides to help a funeral home owner save his family business from a predatory corporate behemoth. In a move to bring emotional resonance to a dry contract law case, the lawyer digs up an unexpected and complex web of race, power and oppression that forces everyone to examine long-buried prejudices they didn’t know they had.

Czech showrunner and screenwriter Štěpán Hulík (“Burning Bush”) and Slovak director Michal Blaško have landed their new drama miniseries “Suspicion” in this year’s Berlin Series sidebar, making history as the first series from the region to do so.
The series follows callous and bitter nurse Hana Kučerová (Klára Melíšková) as she is accused of euthanasia following rumors of her violations and poor treatment of patients. When she is jailed, her frayed relationship with her daughter Tereza (Denisa Barešová) is put to the test as she is left with very few options to prove her innocence.
Hulík’s screenplay is foundationally built on the character of Hana, whose icy disposition challenges the assumed innocence of a protagonist. Melíšková’s portrayal brings a chill to every scene, whether one questions her guilt or not. “Suspicion” is a snapshot of social conspiracy, and points as much at presupposition as it does at justice.

A man wrongly accused and on the run. A beautiful blonde woman with secrets. A cross-country suspense-filled adventure that brought the two together in a way that just barely escaped the censorship board of '50s America. These were the ingredients of a classic Hitchcock film. And in 1959, they were perfected. Shortly after the release of more psychologically intense films like 1956's "The Wrong Man" and 1958's "Vertigo," Hitchcock longed for something lighter. While collaborating with writer Ernest Lehman on a different project, the two realized they could create "the Hitchcock picture to end all Hitchcock pictures."Hitchcock and Lehman brainstormed possible setpieces before anything else: a...

Gotta love that title! Producer Walter Mirisch’s small-scale Monogram noir was once assumed lost, but now it’s making its home video debut on Blu-ray. A luckless young entertainer finds himself neck deep in murder trouble, when an unbreakable string of circumstantial evidence points directly at him. As the date of his execution nears, the only way his desperate wife can help him is to encourage the detective on the case to think he has a chance with her. Taken from a Cornell Woolrich story, the show tries hard despite its low budget — we can almost feel Mirisch behind the scenes, making sure the picture has heart and sincerity.

Though Marvel has decided to consolidate all of its cinematic universe offerings onto Disney+, some outliers still live on for other streaming services. In May 2021, Hulu is set to premiere the latest non-canon Marvel series.
The animated comedy Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere on May 21 and stars Patton Oswalt as the titular Marvel villain. Oswalt’s Modok is every bit the devious floating head that he’s depicted as in the comics. He’s also your every day family man and the show will take on the format of a workplace sitcom. In non-Marvel offerings this month, Shrill will debut its third and final season on May 7. This comedy based on Lindy West’s memoir and starring SNL‘s Aidy Bryant has been a consistently bright presence on the streaming scene since...

Rhonda Fleming died last Wednesday in Santa Monica, California. The 97-year-old actress, who had left a successful 15-year career as a leading lady in studio films 60 years ago, was correctly noted in her obituaries as “the Queen of Technicolor” because of her flaming red hair, as well as her significant presence as a film noir actress, particularly in Jacques Tourneur’s masterpiece “Out of the Past” (1947).
Her films included a number of now-acclaimed auteurist titles like Budd Boetticher’s “The Killer Is Loose,” Allan Dwan’s “Slightly Scarlet” and “Tennessee’s Partner,” and Fritz Lang’s “While the City Sleeps,” to go along with more mainstream titles like “The Spiral Staircase” and “The Gunfight at O.K. Corral.”
Unlike actresses like Ingrid Bergman, Grace Kelly, Tippi Hedren, and others who made multiple films with Alfred Hitchcock, Fleming is less identified with the master. But he provided her with her breakout role in 1945’s “Spellbound.

Milan Peter Sova, who was the cinematographer on such revered films as Diner and Donnie Brasco during his long career, has died. He passed Aug. 27 at his home in South Kortight, New York. No cause of death was given. Born in Czechoslovakia, Sova emigrated to the US in the mid-1960s. Early in his career, he shot the award-winning Short Eyes,” a 1977 film directed by Robert M. Young and starring Bruce Davison. The film was shot in a Manhattan prison and featured real inmates in the cast.
From there, Sova went on to shoot many of Barry Levinson’s early films, including Diner, Good Morning Vietnam, and Tin Man. He also was the director of photography on Mike Newell’s Donnie Brasco and worked with director Paul McGuigan on the films Gangster #1, The Reckoning, and Lucky Number Slevin.
His most recent work was on the documentary Driven to Abstraction.

When Sherlock debuted a decade ago on the BBC, it was unlike anything else on television. For one, the format was a bit odd: one season of three 90-minute episodes. For another, it didn’t look like anything else on TV: Text messages that appear as part of the mise-en-scène. Edits and scene transitions that move us elegantly and efficiently through space and time. All part of a visual language that brings us into the mind of one of the cleverest characters in all of pop culture as he does what he does best: solves mysteries.
