And so the “life-changing cab ride” sub-genre expands with Driving Madeleine, directed by Christian Carion and starring Line Renaud and Dany Boon. One likes to imagine this new film exists in the same universe as all of the rest. Somewhere in Atlanta, Morgan Freeman drives Jessica Tandy (Driving Miss Daisy) and gets a handle on prejudice. Meanwhile, Winona Ryder and Gene Rowlands (Night on Earth) have reunited in Los Angeles. Elsewhere in the City of Angels, Tom Cruise has just stepped into Jamie Foxx’s car (Collateral). Finally, in North Carolina, Souléymane Sy Savané and Red West (Goodbye Solo) carry on a gentle conversation.
Carion often trades in sentimentality (see his Joyeux Noël), and Driving Madeleine is as sentimental as it gets. Cab driver Charles (Boon) is in a bad situation. His marriage is strained, he has debts he cannot pay, and he’s one traffic stop away from losing his license.

Hallmark has revealed that it will have 40 all-new, original movies for both its flagship channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, as well as special content for Hallmark Movies Now, the company’s subscription streaming service.
Even though the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes impacted TV and film productions, Hallmark anticipated the labor dispute by getting a head start on production in Canada. “Christmas is a year-round business at Hallmark, so we were able to mitigate early in the year understanding that the strikes were unfortunately imminent,” Lisa Hamilton Daly, EVP of programming at Hallmark Media, was recently quoted as saying. “We’re grateful to meet all our goals for a full, all-new holiday slate and to bring our viewers the content they love most to celebrate the season.”

A deranged killer clown…
A mad bride covered in blood…
A desperate man sells his soul to the Devil…
Horror movie villains? Of course. But also, surprisingly, protagonists of world-famous operas.
Because while it might not seem immediately obvious, opera and horror are genres with many commonalities. Like horror, traditional classical opera thrives on grandiosity, with overwhelming visuals and soaring soundtracks to imply the conflict, intrigue and drama. Like horror, opera focuses on the extremes of human emotion and interaction: obsessive vengeance, unresolved despair, consuming passions. Both genres are stereotyped by outsiders–opera as a tedious or incomprehensible ordeal, horror movies as tawdry and tasteless. And fans of both will cry betrayal at anything that deviates from long-standing, deeply cherished genre tropes–they like what they like and they’ll throw down to defend their opinions. (Forget about your heated Freddy vs. Jason arguments; start a debate on whether a...

Kevin McHale and Justin Thorne first worked together when they were members of the boy band Nlt in the mid-aughts. Now, the two are thinking about a bear band.
McHale, best known for his work as Artie on “Glee,” and Thorne are the creators of the AlphaBeatZ, five animated singing and dancing teddy bears; they launched the group over the holidays with a short video on social media featuring the cuddly creatures coming to life in a young boy’s bedroom and performing a portion of the original tune “Christmas Everyday.” They also released “The AlphaBeatZ Christmas!,” a five-song EP of holiday music, including covers of “Feliz Navidad” and “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town.”
The AlphaBeatZ are voiced by McHale, Thorne, McHale’s “Glee” co-star Jenna Ushkowitz, Chris Moy and Shelby Rabara.
“We joke that it’s the Spice Girls meets One Direction but for kids,” Thorne tells me.

‘Tis the season. Well almost. And perhaps that is why AMC+ and Rlje recently swooped in and took the new holiday-themed dramedy Silent Night off the market (domestically at least) before its Toronto International Film Festival premiere tonight. Who doesn’t love a good ‘ol Christmas movie, perhaps the most reliable genre for feel good feelings?

The Zebra has been the most entertaining of the season 1 contestants on “The Masked Dancer.” Even he can’t believe he has made it to the Top 4 competing on February 10 for a place in the final. He made it to this stage of the competition by impressing the four judges with his lively routine set to “Take You Dancing” by Jason Derulo on the February 3 quarter-final.
We’ve been trying to figure out who the Zebra is all season long. We’ve watched that performance again as well as his first three appearances: “Magalenha” by Sérgio Mendes on January 6; “All My Life” by K-Ci and JoJo on January 13; and “Mi Gente” by J Balvin on January 2y. “The Masked Dancer” is only three episodes old but it is already one of our favorite shows of the year. We love watching stars wearing elaborate costumes doing difficult dance steps. On the second episode of season 1, which aired on January 6, five celebrities danced and four of them made the cut; Ice Cube was revealed to be Bill Nye, “The Science Guy.” We’ve been been busy since then scouring the clues and performance videos and have all of your “The Masked Dancer” spoilers, including the identity of the most energetic dancer of the bunch, Zebra, who performs again on January 13.
On episode 2, the Zebra dazzled us with his fancy footwork set to “Magalenha” by Sérgio Mendes. The four judges were way off with their guesses of Ricky Martin, Pitbull, or Kevin Richardson. “The Masked Dancer” continues on January 6 with the second set of five celebrities competing as Group B. Among these famous five is someone disguised as a Zebra. We think that the Zebra is Mario Lopez.

James McAvoy and Claire Foy will star in the upcoming English-language remake of the French thriller “My Son.” STXfilms has bought the worldwide rights to the film.
McAvoy will portray a man whose only son goes missing, leading to him travel to the town where his ex-wife (Foy) lives in search of answers. To play a man whose life is clouded by mystery, McAvoy will not be given a script or dialogue, so his character will only be aware of basic aspects of his story, and he will have to improvise and react to each moment as it unfolds. The rest of the cast and crew will be aware of the scenes.
The original film was released in 2017 with Christian Carion directing and Guillaume Canet starring in McAvoy’s role an absentee father searching for his kidnapped son in the mountains of southeast France. Carion has been attached to direct the English-language version,...

Filmmaker Joe Swanberg is best known for his work in the mumblecore subgenre, writing and directing micro-budget films with an emphasis on naturalistic acting and improvised dialogue. His movies, like 2013's Drinking Buddies and 2014's Happy Christmas, are indie comedy-dramas concerned with the interpersonal relationships and the romantic entanglements of people in their twenties and early thirties. Occasionally, however, Swanberg works in the horror genre, as an actor and director. Now, he's collaborating with Dave Franco on the actor's directorial debut, a film titled The Rental, which combines Swanberg's mumblecore and horror sensibilities with mixed results. To celebrate the success of their tech start-up, business partners Charlie (Dan Stevens from The Guest and Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga) and Mina (Sheila Vand from A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night) ...

A+E Networks says there is plenty of content in its production pipeline.
The company will renew its successful “Live Pd” franchise for an additional 160 episodes on A&e, while launching a live showcase led by comedian Jeff Foxworthy and a series featuring WWE wrestlers tracking the professional-wrestling organization’s memorabilia – a sign that many TV companies will likely rely on reality programming in weeks ahead as production is crimped by the coronavirus pandemic. And it will also unveil a spate of original movies for its Lifetime cable network, says Paul Buccieri, president of A+E Networks Group, in an interivew.

Once again, a new documentary tops the specialized top 10 with “The Biggest Little Farm.” And, once again, a high-profile narrative film from a major director and well-known cast — “All Is True” — struggled in its opening weekend.
It’s a pattern we’ve seen repeatedly, most recently with Aretha Franklin documentary “Amazing Grace” and Judi Dench drama “Red Joan.” And where “Tolkien” might have been a platform release in the past, it opened in over 1,400 theaters. The emphasis on wider play shifts from the conventional paradigm, as well as a lack of faith given its mediocre reviews.

Playtime, the Paris-based co-production and sales company which will be presenting Francois Ozon’s anticipated “By the Grace of God” in competition at the Berlin Film Festival, has acquired three offbeat French comedies: Geraldine Nakache’s “I’ll Go Where You Go,” “The Bare Necessity” with Fanny Ardant, and Valerie Donzelli’s “Our Lady of Paris.”
“Our Lady of Paris” marks Donzelli’s fifth feature film, following “Marguerite & Julien,” which competed at the Cannes Film Festival; “Hand in Hand”; “Declaration of War,” which played at Cannes’ Critics’ Week and earned six Cesar nominations; and “Queen of Hearts.”
Donzelli stars in the film as Maud Crayon, a failing architect and single mom of two who unexpectedly wins the contest to spearhead the renovation of the esplanade of Notre-Dame de Paris, and who has to deal with a pair of exes – both of whom she still has feelings for.

Daniel Bruhl was “immediately fascinated” by “The Alienist” when he first read Caleb Carr‘s original novel. That novel was adapted into a TNT limited series in which Bruhl plays Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a criminal psychologist (known at the time as an alienist) who teams up with a newspaper illustrator (Luke Evans) and a headstrong NYPD secretary (Dakota Fanning) to investigate a serial killer in 19th century New York City. The actor, who grew up in Germany, was particularly struck by the show’s combination of “gripping, dark thriller” and “entertaining history lesson about New York … I learned so many things I didn’t know.” He was also excited by the opportunity to go “back in time” to explore “the beginning of so many sciences that now we know so much better.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Brühl above.

The greatest thing about the best foreign-language film category is the recognition of works from all around the world. Throughout the years, movies made outside the United States of America have gotten the recognition they deserve thanks to the implementation of this specific award. With the 2017 Oscars right around the corner, let’s take a look back at the distribution of nominations and wins across the seven continents that make up this big world we inhabit.
This year’s best foreign-language film contenders are: Toni Erdmann (Germany), The Salesman (Iran), Land of Mine (Denmark), A Man Called Ove (Sweden), Paradise (Russia), The King’s Choice (Norway), My Life as a Zucchini (Switzerland), It’s Only the End of the World (Canada), and Tanna (Australia). This site’s namesake, The Hollywood’s Scott Feinberg, lists the first five of those as frontrunners and the other four as major threats.

In an unusual take on the World War II movie, French director Christian Carion focuses on a group of French villagers attempting to flee on the eve of the German invasion, in Come What May. Carion directed Joyeux Noel, the crowd-pleasing film about the real World War I Christmas Truce, when some soldiers on both sides called a one-day unofficial truce. Carion’s new film, in French with some German and English and with subtitles, centers on a group of people whose stories are drawn from those of real civilian refugees. It is a well-made historical film with a talented international cast, fine period detail and filmed in lovely rural locations but the story leans towards the sentimental and conventional.
Carion co-wrote the film, which opens (and closes) with photos of real French refugees and a few words about their struggles, plus a dedication to the director’s mother, who...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As expected, Labor Day weekend wasn’t good for the two new wide releases at all, although the romantic drama The Light Between Oceans (DreamWorks), starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, ended up doing far better of the two. Also as expected, Fede Alvarez’s Don’t Breathe (Screen Gems) won the weekend with a four-day total of $19.7 million, a little less than I predicted. The Light Between Oceans ended up with slightly over $6 million, roughly the same as my original prediction but 20th Century Fox’s thriller Morgan, starring Kate Mara, bomb-bomb-bombed with a ridiculously bad four-day opening of just $2.5 million in its first four days. The Mexican comedy No Manches Frida (Lionsgate/Pantelion) ended up faring better in just 362 theaters,...
