I am a huge fan of early comedies and love many of the films of Snub Pollard. So, when I saw this one on YouTube AND realize I hadn't seen it before, I simply had to see it. Unfortunately, while I did enjoy the short, I soon realized that part of the beginning of the film is missing...something not at all uncommon in old films, as the nitrate film stock tends to easily degrade. If you do see it, be aware it is not complete but this is probably the most complete version possible at this time.
The story starts with cops chasing an old fashioned carriage, with Snub as the driver. You have no idea why they're chasing him and the scene soon switches to some fancy society party. Snub and his young friends, Sunshine Sammy Morrison, enter the party in tuxedos and pretend to be fancy. But the party turns out to be pretty bad.... Snub gets nothing to eat and when he tries to smoke his cigar, he's told to leave. On the way out, he bumps into a thief and gets the bag of stolen goods back....and soon everything thinks Snub and Sunshine Sammy are thieves...and give chase.
This film is modestly enjoyable but isn't exactly brilliant. I cannot blame the director (Charley Chase) nor cast, as after all the film isn't complete. But for old time comedy fans like me, it's pretty complete...complete enough to merit watching.
