Kiyohara Yui’s Remembering Every Night is so relaxed that it’s easy to feel that it was less written and shot than casually observed. The film follows three women at various stages in life as they navigate the sprawling Tama New Town residential area in Tokyo over the course of a single day. Though their paths intersect occasionally, the women’s stories lack the connective tissue that typically defines network narratives, with the biggest shared trait between the women being their general listlessness in going about daily routines. Nonetheless, their quotidian behaviors subtly reveal personal and larger social portraits of contemporary life in Japan, and certain aspects of that life affect the characters in different ways.
One of these threads is the role that Japan’s conservative social values play in shaping women’s lives. We first meet Chizu (Hyodo Kumi), the eldest of the main characters, as she...

Until 15 years ago or so, zombie cinema was still a fairly narrow subgenre. These days, however, it seems to be one size that fits all — or at least is stretched to fit every other genre, from comedy to romance to globe-trotting action, with the occasional traditional gorefest thrown in for old time’s sake.
Whether it’s really well suited to a drama about child abuse is something viewers of “The Dark” will have to decide for themselves, though perhaps the better questions are: Did we even need to find out? Aren’t there (many) better ways of approaching such a difficult theme than via a shotgun marriage with horror conventions? On its own terms, writer-director Justin P. Lange’s debut feature (with Dp Klemens Hufnagl credited as co-director) is well-crafted and well-acted. But in trying to succeed as something both metaphorical and very literal-minded, the movie ends up being...

The creepy housekeeper in Shirley Jackson's classic The Haunting of Hill House gives an ominous warning to her newly arrived guests at that titular mansion - that nobody's coming to save them, not "in the night, in the dark." Shelf sitters aren’t always bad news in my eyes; take for instance Superstition (1982). This Canadian curiosity was filmed in ’81, released abroad in ’82, and finally washed ashore in North America in early ’85; it is by turns goofy, gory, dumb, and creative in its kills, and is a great addition to a sub-genre I’m just going to call Italiadjacent, where films from this side of the pond look to that side for aesthetical inspiration and end up with nonsensical storylines. And while Superstition tries to keep it together, it can’t help but let loose and summon up its inner Argento from time to time.
Also known as The Witch, Superstition was part of the U.K.’s notorious early ‘80s Video Nasties scene, but landed on the non-prosecutable Section 3 list, which I guess were films still really bad for you, but not “go to jail” bad for renting or selling them.

Directed and written by Justin P. Lange, The Dark is a different kind of teen film. Considering one of the characters is an undead teen girl, you’d think it would be a horror, but based on the clip above, it seems to go beyond the normal zombie narrative.
Nadia Alexander stars as Mina, the aforementioned undead, flesh-eating teen — and she’s not too fond of her new lifestyle. She has been cursed to haunt her childhood home in the woods so that nobody gets in and nobody gets out alive. Then she meets Alex (Toby Nichols), a blind teen boy who is dealing with his own problems. Instead of devouring him, Mina lets him live and the two begin to bond and some of her old human feelings begin to resurface. From this, they develop an interesting friendship.
The Dark will make its World Premiere on April 21 at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Beware the rain.
This spring, most of us are more worried about the snow, but in this upcoming Netflix Ya post-apocalyptic thriller, it's all about The Rain.

Teen boys feel Impact of horror, vid game pics
Paul W.S. Anderson still hasn't come down from the high of having two No. 1 films at the boxoffice this summer. As the writer-director of 20th Century Fox's Alien vs. Predator and the writer-producer of Screen Gems' Resident Evil: Apocalypse, the British-born filmmaker has seen the two movies gross more than $127.3 million domestically. And, in the process, he also has proved that he knows what teenage boys want when they go to the movies. That talent has raised Anderson's profile in Hollywood, which always is keen to capture the imagination of teenage boys. By working in both the horror and video game genres, Anderson and his production partner, Jeremy Bolt, have demonstrated a knack for capturing that sector of the audience. With 1995's Mortal Kombat, which reaped $70.4 million domestically for Paramount Pictures, Anderson directed one of the first video game adaptations. He and Bolt then had a hand in both Resident Evil titles; the first, in 2002, took in $40.1 million, while its sequel has attracted $47.6 million to date. Partnered under their company banner, Impact Films, Anderson and Bolt have three pictures in development: Two of them are video game adaptations -- D.O.A. and Driver -- and the third is a low-budget supernatural thriller titled The Dark.

Bello turns to 'Violence' for NL
Maria Bello is in negotiations to star opposite Viggo Mortensen in A History of Violence at New Line Cinema. David Cronenberg is directing. Adapted by Josh Olson from John Wagner and Vince Locke's graphic novel, Violence tells the story of an ordinary family's life after the father (Mortensen) receives unwanted national attention for a seemingly vigilante-style self-defense killing at his diner. Bello would play Mortensen's character's wife. New Line execs Kent Alterman and Cale Boyter are overseeing for the studio. JC Spink and Chris Bender are producing through their Benderspink shingle, while Roger Kass and Josh Braun are executive producing. Bello has been working nonstop since receiving acclaim for last year's The Cooler. She will next appear in John Sayles' Silver City, which Newmarket Films is distributing, and she just wrapped a lead role in Assault on Precinct 13 and a starring role in the indie feature The Sisters, based on Anton Chekhov's The Three Sisters. She is currently shooting The Dark. Bello is repped by CAA and manager John Carrabino.
