- On a planet Pern that resembles Earth during the Middle Ages, dragons and their riders defend the planet from a deadly space spore every few centuries. One dragonrider, D'Kor, must investigate a suspicious sudden viral outbreak.
- In the future, people of Earth attempt to colonize other inhabitable planets. One of them is a planet dubbed Pern (short for Parallel Earth, Resources Negligible). The colonists settle in and develop an agrarian culture, but then discover that a comet that passes the planet every couple of hundred years carries in its tail a deadly viral pathogen that kills all life. Some colonists try to evacuate, but most hide in the underground caves. Believing that the colony is dead and planet uninhabitable due to the viral danger, Earth ships leave Pern for good. The survivors are many, however, and they develop dragon-like creatures from fire lizards through bioengineering. These "dragons" have telepathic link with a human of their choosing who becomes their rider. These dragonriders with the help of their fire-breading flying dragons manage to destroy the spores. Slowly, the history of Man's arrival on the planet is forgotten and medieval culture develops. The dragonriders become very influential, but also unnecessary, since the threat is gone for a long while. The story of the game begins when one dedicated dragonrider, D'Kor, is assigned to find a candidate for the new female dragonrider that shall lead his clan. During his search, he learns that there's a new viral outbreak spreading, although there's no comet this time. He believes it's just another form of the old virus, but soon finds evidence of a conspiracy.—Anonymous
