Up to this point, filmmaker Scott Derrickson has been primarily known for his horror output. Movies like “Sinister,” “The Black Phone,” and “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” make clear that the writer/director has a knack for the genre. While on the surface, his newest feature, “The Gorge,” sounds like just another scary flick to add to his resume, there’s actually more to the upcoming feature than scares and suspense, as he stressed in a recent article for IGN.

Horror movies have been with us for a very, very long time. This genre, despite inducing shock and fear among the viewers, is extremely popular, and starting with Alfred Hitchcock, some directors have made careers by making horrors. George Romero, John Carpenter, and Wes Craven are considered classics, while today, we have a series of new, young directors who are great in the genre.
And since we’re writing this in a period of year when horrors are even more popular than usual, we have found a very interesting report that has seemingly determined the scariest horror movie of all time based on objective scientific criteria.
If you want to know how the guys at Science of Scare determined this and which horror movie actually won the prestigious title, we advise you to stick with us until the end as we are going to reveal absolutely everything you need to know.

After being an executive producer on the BET+ supernatural horror film The Reading, Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels decided to try his hand at making his own horror flick. That horror movie is The Deliverance, which has just been released on Netflix after a limited theatrical release.
Like The Reading, The Deliverance is a supernatural horror film. It was helmed by Daniels from a screenplay co-written by David Coggeshall and Elijah Bynum. It's inspired by the horrifying true story of Latoya Ammons, a single mother who claimed that she and her family had experienced a series of supernatural experiences in their Gary, Indiana, home.
In The Deliverance, we follow Ebony Jackson, a struggling single mother trying to make ends meet. In search of a fresh start, Ebony moves her family into a new home in Pittsburgh. However, shortly after moving in, the family begins to experience strange, demonic occurrences. These increasingly...

And we’re back. We’re back to possession and we are back to it being heavy on the religious side and everything purported to be a true story. This time we are looking a little deeper into the legal implications of what happens when someone is injured or even dies during an exorcism, sanctioned or not. The Exorcism of Emily Rose (watch it Here) was a massive commercial hit and garnered middle of the pack reviews when it came out in 2005. 2005 was not a banner year for horror and it was different from the slew of remakes as well as setting itself apart from nearly everything else that came out that year. While The Asylum, known for schlock takes on popular products, would release their version of the true story in 2011 and German film Requiem would come out to far better acclaim the next year, Emily Rose would be...

Actor Meagan Good was known for starring in lighthearted projects like Cousin Skeeter at the start of her career. She has since branched out to include a variety of movies in her resume. But she might be understated as a horror movie star as well, having starred in her fair share of slashers and paranormal films. This made sense, however, as it was the Halloween franchise that inspired Good to be an actor in the first place.

As is the case with many actors, Good knew that she wanted to be involved in the film industry as a child. But she told Cigar & Spirits that it was all a matter of how badly she wanted to pursue a career in film.

The filmmaking duo behind the 2021 sleeper hit The Black Phone, based on Joe Hill's short story, have just inked a new deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment! Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill have signed a first-look agreement with Sony, specifically their genre-focused division Screen Gems, reports Deadline.
Derrickson previously worked with Screen Gems on his breakout horror film The Exorcism of Emily Rose, one of my favorite possession films of all time. Screen Gems is also the studio behind last year's huge hit Insidious: The Red Door and the recently released Tarot. The studio's upcoming projects include the sixth Insidious film and the John Cho-led horror film They Listen.
Besides The Black Phone, Derrickson and Cargill collaborated on Sinister and Sinister 2, which collectively made over $140 million at the box office. The duo is currently in post-production on the romantic action film The Gorge, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Miles Teller,...

Screen Gems has put out a whole lot of horror movies over the years, with titles including The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Don’t Breathe, Resident Evil, Underworld, Deliver Us from Evil, The Grudge, Carrie, The Stepfather, Prom Night, The Pope’s Exorcist, Insidious: The Red Door, and the recently released Tarot – and they’re making moves to ensure they’re going to be seen as a source for interesting horror in the years ahead. They’re working with Platinum Dunes on the “District 9 by way of The Purge“ werewolf movie Wolf Night and recently signed a first-look deal with Gary Dauberman that will see him “creating projects for himself while curating a slate featuring established and up-and-coming filmmakers.” Now Deadline reports that Scott Derrickson, the director of such films as Sinister, Doctor Strange, The Black Phone, and the previously mentioned The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Deliver Us from Evil,...

Joaquin Phoenix "didn't really belong" in 'Doctor Strange'.The 49-year-old actor was once eyed to play the lead role in the Marvel movie - but director Scott Derrickson now admits that Benedict Cumberbatch is much more suited to the part.Scott, 57, told SlashFilm: "I met with a bunch of actors, and Joaquin was the one that I spent the most time with. "As we continued to talk, it became clear to me that Joaquin didn't really belong in that movie and probably never belonged in the MCU. "He's a very specific guy with very specific goals as an actor, and a very specific way of performing. I think it became clear to both of us that this might not be a good fit, really is what it came down to."Scott "spent a couple of long afternoons" with Joaquin, but Benedict was always his number one choice for the role.

The horror genre is generally best known for its monsters, ghosts, ghouls, zombies and other weird and wonderful supernatural creatures. Which is great, because we love it all the more for those classic staples. However, some of the most effective horror movies do not rely upon those things, and as playfully gross as they are, they live in the realm of fantasy, so audiences can generally dissociate them from the real world. So, when a horror movie begins and you see the words ‘based upon a true story’, it makes the terror that follows, all the more serious and intense. If you’re one of those people who’s scared easily by horror movies, you can comfort yourself by saying, ‘well, it’s only a movie’, but if you know that what you’re watching actually occurred, then it’s harder to escape from. The genre has many examples of...

What are the chances that two films called The Piper, both horror films involving the legend of The Pied Piper, would come out in the same year? And that both would be hard to see? While I haven’t seen the one starring Liz Hurley yet, I did get a chance to see the one written and directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen and featuring the late Julian Sands in one of his last roles.
It opens with the voice of Gustafson (Sands) on the phone trying to talk Katherine out of destroying the last copy of her Concerto for Children. She tells him “It is evil, no one must ever know about it” before rushing outside to try and burn it in her fire pit. But something with glowing eyes intervenes, and she burns while the manuscript survives.

Traditionally the best horror films have been rated R to provide fans with the appropriate blood, guts and chills required to give a proper scare, but every so often one comes along that the MPAA doesn’t think warrants such a harsh rating yet still gives that blood curdling, spine tingling spook fest you would want from a horror movie of any rating. Ever since the first Exorcist movie, we’ve been bombarded by religious horror with similar iconography, symbols, and ideas. Sister Death is a unique film that doesn’t quite fit the bill perfectly, but that makes it all the more powerful due to its unpredictable nature. The slow-burn film is not like others in the same genre, but it still uses similar visuals to propel the story, which in its own way makes it a little uninteresting. Sister Death tells the story of Sister Narcisa, a character from the 2017 Spanish-language horror film Veronica. A young novice who doubts her status as a “holy girl” begins to find strange things when she joins a convent to teach young girls. As the story unfolds, nothing is as it seems. Burning crucifixes, suffocation, and objects falling from nowhere are all common traits of this genre that this film uses extensively. So, taking some liberties,...

The Enfield Poltergeist, directed by Jerry Rothwell, is a montage of the supernatural, science, childhood trauma, and many other aspects. This mini-documentary series pulls lightly at the strings of horror while focusing more on the scientific aspects. The events surrounding the Hodgson family and the experiences that they have had have been explored here. The intervention of Maurice Grosse, a member of the Society for Psychical Research (Spr), between 1977 and 1978 with more than 200 hours of tape recordings has been highlighted. The four-part mini-documentary series brings out a real-life infamous case of the haunting at a house in Enfield, reminding us of similar movies based on real-life stories like The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Amityville Horror, and others. Was Maurice able to rid the Hodgsons of the torture of the poltergeist? Was Janice really possessed, or was she faking things to garner attention? Let us look into what several witnesses...

Thanks to Netflix, every week another bygone movie flickers into our consciousness like some long-forgotten dream, lingers momentarily, then fades into the recesses of our collective memory. It's like our cultural life is flashing before our eyes before we all tumble into oblivion... Anyway, while we're on the theme of existential horror, this week we've got a scary movie for you that's winning over the Netflix crowd.
"Deliver Us from Evil" is a 2014 horror effort from director Scott Derrickson, of "The Black Phone," "Doctor Strange," and "Sinister" fame. Even after moving up a week to escape the all-consuming drawing power of Taylor Swift, “The Exorcist: Believer” is thus far holding its own as the key new wide release this weekend. The $30 million-budgeted legacy sequel to the late William Friedkin’s 50-year-old Oscar-nominated blockbuster earned $2.85 million in Thursday preview showings. Barring massive frontloading or unexpected legs, that positions the film for a domestic debut weekend between $25 million and $30 million.
While the film itself cost a reasonable (if high for Blumhouse) $30 million, the overall package deal to nab the rights to the IP went for $400 million. That deal, made in the summer of 2021, seemed to be a byproduct of Netflix throwing around money like it was tissue paper.
Comcast was arguably making a show of saying that it too would spend and spend big on potentially big-deal IP. Recall that Netflix had just spent $450 million on acquiring and producing the...

The sequels — or, in two cases, prequels — to “The Exorcist” have all been unqualified turkeys. There is now a movement at hand to declare that John Boorman’s crackpot insect-swarm fantasia “Exorcist II: The Heretic” (1977) was some sort of misunderstood masterpiece, but that’s an act of revisionism every bit as loony tunes as “Heaven’s Gate” revisionism.
That said, the “Exorcist” genre has never left the culture. It has spawned successful pieces of claptrap, like “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” (2005), whose opening-weekend gross of $30 million in the dead zone of early September was more shocking than anything in the film. Fifty years ago, the very essence of William Friedkin’s “The Exorcist” was its obscenely eruptive, pea-soup-in-the-face, borderline-demonic-child-porn shock value. The film marked nothing less than the birth of extreme culture, and we’ve never looked back. It also influenced the rise of the Evangelical movement, since if Satan was now in our face,...

With “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” exceeding all expectations over Easter weekend, it’s likely to be the #1 movie this weekend and maybe one or two more after that. Undaunted, four studios studios are releasing movies that will try to bring in business despite the overwhelming success and popularity of Universal’s animated movie.
In fact, Universal will be making a play for the top two spots this weekend with its latest horror-comedy “Renfield,” which comes from “The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman‘s Skybound Entertainment with Chris McKay (“The Lego Batman Movie”) at the helm. It stars Nicholas Hoult (“The Favourite”) as the title character, henchman to the legendary vampire Count Dracula, as played by Nicolas Cage. Akwafina, Ben Schwartz and Oscar nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo all have key roles, as well.

Before 2012, you’d be forgiven if you didn’t think it was possible for filmmaker Scott Derrickson to become a master of the horror genre. He’d had three directorial credits to his name up until that point: the forgettable Hellraiser sequel, Inferno, the mediocre horror-courtroom drama The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and the unfortunate The Day the Earth Stood Still remake. While surely a competent director, it’s safe to say no one was necessarily clamoring for the next Scott Derrickson feature. That all changed in October of 2012 with the release of Sinister, a genuinely disturbing low-budget horror effort that remains one of the creepiest movies within the genre over the last ten years.
After directing Deliver Us From Evil, and a little Marvel movie called Doctor Strange, Derrickson returned to the shadows with The Black Phone, based on a short story by Joe Hill and starring newcomer Mason Thames.

It seems like the box office is slowly rebounding after a couple slower months, but this weekend, “Black Adam” won’t have much in terms of competition for the top spot, so it will score an easy second weekend at #1 probably with around 28 to 30 million or a little more. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
That doesn’t mean that there aren’t any new movies in wide release. In fact, there’s just one, and that’s Lionsgate’s much-delayed and name-changed horror flick “Prey for the Devil,” an exorcism horror drama directed by Daniel Stamm (“The Last Exorcism”). It stars Jacqueline Byers (“Salvation”) as Sister Ann, a rare female exorcist, who has to deal with a few cases of demonic possession. It also stars Virginia Madsen and Colin Salmon, both of whom have quite a bit of genre experience.

It is Halloween season, and there is no better time to revel in the festivities than by catching a truly haunting movie. “The Possession” is the fourth entry in the dabbe series of movies which introduced the ‘Djinn’ archetype into Turkish cinema. Apart from that, it also unveiled many fresh takes on the genre that makes it truly unique and thrilling to watch. There is its highly realistic camerawork that puts you right into the action as if you were witnessing an exorcism in a claustrophobic room. And then there it is its audacity to poke at Islamic dark arts and demonic possessions, a macabre marriage that is not only taboo but also a gutsy headfirst trudge into an unspoken and unheard chapter of the horror playbook.

Director Scott Derrickson is known for jumping around different genre sandboxes. His work ranges from science fiction ("The Day the Earth Stood Still") to Marvel superheroes ("Doctor Strange"), but arguably his most effective films are those that exist within the horror sphere. After all, Derrickson's latest film, "The Black Phone," is one of 2022's biggest hits. Even though it's been well over a decade since I last saw "The Exorcism of Emily Rose," I find it difficult to shake Jennifer Carpenter's haunting performance.
If there's one film of Derrickson that gives me the creeps more than the others, it undoubtedly has to be "Sinister," which just celebrated its 10th anniversary. It's the kind of horror movie that you can't quite shake from your memory. Even a scientific test deemed "Sinister" the scariest movie ever made.

Filmmaker Scott Derrickson can seemingly track his reputation as a director by what projects he was offered following any one of his movies. After writing the modest 2000 horror sequel "Urban Legends: Final Cut," Derrickson had an opportunity to write and direct the newest installment in a popular film series. Sadly, "Hellraiser: Inferno" went straight to video and was not terribly well-received by "Hellraiser" fans. In 2004, Derrickson garnered a story-by credit on Wim Wenders' post-9/11 drama "Land of Plenty," which, in terms of genre, was quite the gearshift. "Landy of Plenty" never emerged as an arthouse darling and the director moved back to horror to make "The Exorcism of Emily Rose." On a budget if 19 million, that film made 145 million worldwide in 2005.
In an upcoming oral history of Derrickson's "Sinister" compiled by /Film's own Ryan Scott, the future "Doctor Strange" filmmaker says he "was a big darling around town" following the...

Shudder & Studio71’s Cinepocalypse & Bloody Disgusting-produced V/H/S/99 isn’t even out yet and we’re already rewinding all the way back to the 1980s with V/H/S/85!
The news was announced out of the New York Comic Con where Shudder is putting our V/H/S/99 on display ahead of the October 20th release date.
Directors are already locked for V/H/S/85 and filming is currently underway for release in 2023.
Here’s who we lined up:
The only legacy filmmaker is David Bruckner, who will be spearheading the latest entry. Bruckner directed the “Amateur Night” segment of the first V/H/S which featured the breakout performance of Hannah Fierman as a succubus. Bruckner, who also directed Searchlight’s The Night House, just celebrated the release of his Hellraiser reimaging. We’ve been huge fans of Bruckner since he co-directed The Signal and also absolutely love his Netflix creature feature The Ritual.

Spooky Season is in session on Hulu, as the streaming service is adding a ton of horror-themed content this month. But not to worry, there’s plenty of other non-spooky new movies and shows to watch, too.
In the horror realm, director David Bruckner’s new (and well-received) take on “Hellraiser” arrives on Oct. 7, while horror films ranging from “Annabelle: Creation” to “The ABCs of Death” to “Monster House” to “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” arrive throughout the month.
In decidedly non-scary new arrivals, the entire series of “Schitt’s Creek” comes to Hulu on Oct. 3 after streaming on Netflix for the last few years, while the Hulu original film “Rosaline” – which tells the “Romeo and Juliet” story from a different point of view – streams on Oct. 14.
Other noteworthy library titles include Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch” on Oct. 25 and David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” on Oct. 31.

When the name of your streaming service so neatly fits into the word “Halloween,” you have a moral imperative to bring the goods come spooky season. Thankfully Hulu is abiding by that obligation with its list of new releases for October 2022.
Halloween…or rather Huluween is set to be a big deal for the streamer. This month sees a bevy of horror offerings. On the TV side of things, the series adaptation of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser premieres on Oct. 7. That will be accompanied by two animated specials from Solar Opposites co-creator Justin Roiland. The first is A Sinister Halloween Scary Opposites Solar Special on Oct. 3, which is followed by The Paloni Show! Halloween Special! on Oct. 17.
Hulu’s original movies are decidedly spooky-centric this month as well. The horror meme movie Grimcutty premieres on Oct. 10 and will be followed by Matriarch on Oct. 21. Of course, many of the library...

When TheWrap recently spoke with producer Jason Blum, he explained that Scott Derrickson’s “The Black Phone” would be something of a test for whether original horror films are still viable at the box office. But with the film crossing 100 million globally this week, Derrickson is warmed by the film’s success, and he’s not saying no to the idea of a follow-up.
Derrickson is still in the midst of international press trying to get the most out of this movie before he starts actively thinking about a sequel to “The Black Phone.” But he tells TheWrap he has been talking with “The Black Phone” short story author Joe Hill about exploring more with these characters.

The Joe Hill short story that inspired Scott Derrickson’s latest horror film, “The Black Phone,” isn’t based on actual occurrences, but the ’70s-set abduction chiller is suffused with plenty of authentic horror. The film follows 13-year-old Finney (newcomer Mason Thames), who becomes the latest victim of prolific child abductor and serial killer The Grabber (Ethan Hawke), a local magician who uses his own North Denver neighborhood as a personal hunting ground.
When the film opens, the threat of The Grabber looms large over Finney and his friends, who are extremely aware that they might be scooped up by the vicious criminal and never seen again. For Derrickson, who adapted Hill’s short story alongside his long-time creative partner C. Robert Cargill, the fear that Finney feels even before he’s snatched felt uncomfortably relatable. After all, just like Finney, he grew up during a time when American children were granted enormous freedom,...

Six years after directing the Marvel blockbuster “Doctor Strange,” Scott Derrickson is returning to his roots with “The Black Phone,” an intimate, low-budget horror movie that hearkens back to his early work on “Sinister” and “The Exorcism of Emily Rose.” But more than getting the chance to play in the horror genre again, “The Black Phone” is a movie that Derrickson says grew out of three years of therapy, in which the director dove into “the traumatic nature of my own childhood” and “the violence” he experienced in his school, neighborhood and home.
Of course, all of his movies — even “Doctor Strange” — are in ways personal stories, but “The Black Phone” goes deeper than ever before.
“‘Doctor Strange’ is a personal movie. I think that it feels personal to me, and I don’t think anybody but me would have made that movie the way I made it,” he told TheWrap.

After a few years toiling away in the Marvel Cinematic Universe where he directed and co-wrote 2016’s Doctor Strange before leaving the sequel, director Scott Derrickson is back where he belongs. The purveyor of two of the best horror films of the past 20 years—2005’s The Exorcism of Emily Rose and 2012’s Sinister—Derrickson is again in his genre element with The Black Phone.
He’s also put his preferred team back together too, as The Black Phone reunites Derrickson with Sinister co-writer C. Robert Cargill, as well as that picture’s star, Ethan Hawke. Scott Derrickson really wanted to direct "Doctor Strange." No, seriously. The filmmaker who is known for directing horror movies such as "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" and "Sinister" helmed the Sorcerer Supreme's debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as a former gifted surgeon who gets trained in the mystical arts after a car crash leaves his hands scarred, shaking, and unfit for surgery.
