The Tonight Show bandleader is set to make the short walk from his drumkit to the guest chair to promote Hip-Hop Is History, which will hit bookstores on Tuesday.

The new book sees Questlove, who grew up as an obsessive fan of the then-emerging genre and ultimately became a six-time Grammy Award–winning musician himself, trace the first half-century of hip-hop as only he can.

In recent years Questlove has emerged as America’s unofficial historian of hip-hop, and of music in general. Hip-Hop Is History is a follow-up to his 2021 bestseller Music Is History, and he famously won an Oscar in 2022 for his documentary film Summer of Soul.

The next collaboration between Jason Statham and David Ayer (with a Sylvester Stallone script) – Levon’s Trade – is now shooting, with further casting announced.

Earlier this year we were treated to a rip-roaringly good time when director David Ayer and star Jason Statham brought us The Beekeeper. You can catch our review for that film here, but in short, it was lots of fun and following a theatrical run where it grossed north of $150m, it likely made a profit for all involved.

As such, the production companies behind The Beekeeper have once again acquired the services of Ayer and Statham and are hoping to repeat the trick once again, this time with Levon’s Trade.

As with The Beekeeper, Amazon MGM has agreed to handle distribution in the US, and none other than Sylvester Stallone has adapted the screenplay from Chuck Dixon’s novel.

Exclusive: In a lucrative pact, Amazon MGM Studios has landed U.S. theatrical rights to Levon’s Trade, with Prime Video taking streaming rights in a slew of major international territories, we can reveal.

As we told you last year, the film helmed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad) will star Jason Statham (Fast & Furious franchise) and hail from producers Black Bear and BlockFilm. The screenplay was adapted by Sylvester Stallone (Creed), with revisions by Ayer, and is based on prolific comic author Chuck Dixon’s first novel in the “Levon” series.

Amazon MGM has signed a deal for a wide theatrical release in the U.S. Outside of the Prime Video international territories (where the film conceivably might go online only), Black Bear has sold Levon’s Trade independently to theatrical distributors in multiple overseas markets.

People recently reported in its Barbie special issue that before the start of shooting principal photography, Margot Robbie hosted a sleepover for her fellow Barbie actresses. The outlet quoted Barbie actor Simu Liu describing what took place.

When Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels thinks of those who inspired him, Patrik-Ian Polk easily comes to mind.

Known for telling groundbreaking stories centered on Black gay life — including the independent film Punks, which premiered at Sundance in 2000, and Noah’s Arc, which ran on Logo TV for two seasons from 2005-06 — Polk is a creative force who has chronicled (and continues to chronicle) the lives of underrepresented people while championing diversity way before “Dei” became a buzz term.

Out today, The Handel Project contains three of the 28-year-old South Korean pianist’s favourite suites from Handel’s first collection of Suites de pièces pour le clavecin. The two previous editions of Jeonju were disrupted by Covid. But this year the festival, with 217 films from 52 countries, was held predominantly as an in-person event. The film will play as a special screening out of competition at the non-fiction festival in Nyon. Elizabeth looks at the life of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-serving female head of state in history.

Pure Flix / Quality Flix sales head Ron Gell has started talks with AFM 2020 Online buyers this week on a slate of rom-coms staring Kristy Swanson, Lee Majors, and Scott Baio.

The sales agency known for working on faith-based titles has also announced a raft of sales on the new films and other titles.

Courting Mom & Dad features Swanson (Buffy The Vampire Slayer), Baio, John Farley, Vanessa Angel, and Bailey Baio.

The title translates in english as ‘exchange’, and in this case that definition takes on multiple meanings.

Rialto picks up with 46-year-old dockyard worker Colm (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor), who is married with kids and living comfortably but he is secretly gay, and the shame he feels, not to mention the increasingly changing direction of his life, all begin to consume him. However, in teenage sex worker Jay (Tom Glynn Carney) he finds some kind of connection but with potentially further devastating consequences.

Colm’s self-destructive decisions, spiralling addictions to alcohol, desperate clinging to his paid sex with Jay, increasing frictions at home and tough upbringing, all amount to a compelling but shattering, and sometimes harrowing, portrait of a troubled soul.

Emmy award-winning television producer Kevin Burns, known for his work on the 2006 “Poseidon Adventure” remake and the “Lost in Space” reboot died Sunday of cardiac arrest, Prometheus Entertainment confirmed to Variety. He was 65.

In a statement to Variety, Prometheus Entertainment vice president of marketing and development Derek Thielges said all members of the company, of which Burns was the president, are deeply saddened by the loss.

Established in 1999, Prometheus’ productions include docudramas such as “The Curse of Oak Island” and Playboy-centered “The Girls Next Door,” as well as non-fiction History series “Ancient Aliens” and documentary special “Star Wars: The Legacy Revealed.”

Burns garnered a Primetime Emmy in 2002 for “Biography,” which traces the lives of celebrities and historical figures, in the outstanding non-fiction series category. The following year, he won a Daytime Emmy for producing “Hollywood Rocks the Movies: The 1970s.”

Kevin Burns, president and creator of Prometheus Entertainment and a producer of Netflix’s Lost in Space reboot, died Sunday of cardiac arrest at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 65.

Burns’ death was confirmed by Derek Thielges, vice president marketing and development at Prometheus. The company has produced such non-fiction series as Ancient Aliens, America’s Book of Secrets, Food Paradise and Star Wars: The Legacy Revealed. Docudramas include The Curse of Oak Island and Kendra.

“I am heartbroken to learn of the passing of Mr. Kevin Burns yesterday,” tweeted Ancient Aliens narrator Robert Clotworthy. “Not only was he my boss, he was my friend. He was creative, funny, generous, brilliant, tough, wise, curious, opinionated, loyal and loved life.”

Amazon Prime’s new releases in June 2020 is fairly lacking in original material. That’s to be expected for a streaming service that focuses on quality over quantity to begin with now going through a pandemic content crunch.

Standup special Gina Brillon: The Floor Is Lava, Joseph Gordon-Levitt film 7500, and Pete the Cat season 2 are the only originals arriving this month. And that’s fine as Amazon is about to be home to one of 2019’s most fun films. That’s right – Knives Out makes its debut on June 12. It might be awhile before we get to see the next Benoit Blanc mystery so hopefully this will tide us over.

June 1 also sees the arrival of Dirty Dancing, Kingpin, and the tragically underrated Sex Drive. It’s not the most impressive month Amazon has ever had, but at least you still get free shipping.

Not only will ESPN+ have the entirety of The Last Dance on its servers for late-adopting sports fans to catch up with, but Disney+ will be premiering its long-awaited Artemis Fowl film. Over on its biggest streaming service in Hulu, however, Disney is taking things a bit more slowly.

This month finds only three major original releases for Hulu. Animated medieval comedy Crossing Swords premieres on June 12, then Ya love story Love Victor and cooking show Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi both arrive on June 19. All in all, that’s not a bad haul for originals for the typically slow summer months.

June 1 sees a pretty impressive crop of movies coming to Hulu’s library as well. October Sky, The X-Files (1998), and Casino will all be ready to stream at the beginning of the month.

Exclusive: Frolic Media, an entertainment media company co-founded by former E! President Lisa Berger and former AwesomenessTV executive Sarah Penna, has signed a first-look deal with CBS Television Studios. Additionally, the company, devoted to all things romance, has hired former Dynamic Television exec Elena Blekhter as head of TV and Film. Blekhter was Director of Scripted Content at Dynamic, where she developed and served as co-executive producer on the upcoming Netflix series Ginny & Georgia. 

Under the pact, Frolic will develop female-focused  content for broadcast and streamers.

Frolic Media, a media company and website that has built a community of authors, bloggers, bookstagrammers and storytellers in the romance space, is headed by Berger, a veteran traditional media executive, and Penna, an experienced digital media entrepreneur who recently sold her last company, BigFrame, to DreamWorks.

Formed in 2018, Los Angeles-based Frolic caters to the $1 billion dollar Romance industry in the U.S.

Arturo Castro’s Alternatino is headed to Quibi. The short-form mobile streaming platform has ordered the critically-acclaimed sketch series from the Broad City alum and Comedy Central Productions.

The first season of Alternatino debuted on Comedy Central in June 2019, and showcased Castro’s provocative, unique voice in the comedy landscape. Memorable sketches included “Welcome to America,” about a student in a class of recent immigrants trying to wrap his head around the reality of tragedy as well as “What the Sex Talk Looks Like Now” and “A Sick Child’s Dying Wish”. Castro is known for using modern LatinX identity (misconceptions and all) as a fresh filter for cultural commentary about our daily lives and the zeitgeist — and it is all rooted in his personal experience.

Reinaldo Marcus Green is directing the drama, written by Zach Baylin, about Richard Williams helping daughters Venus and Serena Williams to become tennis stars. Smith plays Richard Williams and his daughters will be portrayed by Saniyya Sidney as Venus and Demi Singleton as Serena. Cohen also worked with Pete Sampras and John McEnroe.

Jon Bernthal and Aunjanue Ellis also star in “King Richard,” produced by Smith via his Westbrook Studios banner along with Tim White and Trevor White through Starthrower Entertainment. Warner Bros. has set the film for a Nov. 25 release.

The Netflix series “Narcos” chronicles the life of Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar (played by Wagner Moura) and the two DEA agents desperate to hunt him down. As Escobar takes control of Colombia, cocaine from the country starts to take over America, and drug-related violence follows not far behind. The DEA sends Steve Murphy (Boyd Holbrook), Javier Peña (Pedro Pascal), and a whole task force to work with Colombian authorities to put an end to the drug trade. But as they arrive in the country, Escobar has problems of his own with rival gangs, business associates, and political violence that brings unwanted attention to his gang. At the start of the second season, Escobar escapes from prison untouched and has taken over the reigns of the drug business once again while the authorities are planning a full invasion to bring him down. "The Good Wife" (Sunday on CBS at 9 p.m.)

This is it. The end of an era. After seven seasons of heartbreak (she'll always love you, Will!), headaches, incredibly sharp writing, and powerful performances from Julianna Margulies down to the many amazing guest stars, Alicia Florrick's story is coming to an end on May 8. The series finale, appropriately titled "End," was written by showrunners Robert and Michelle King, and directed by Robert King. Margulies told Entertainment Weekly the finale will be "satisfying, uplifting and sad." The showrunners have Not shot down that Josh Charles return rumor, so here's hoping for some kind of flashback/vision/cameo/thing. Also, here's hoping for more of this, from Alicia and Jason:
