Tatino Films, a French production and consultancy company involved in industry events in Asia and Europe, is launching the Full Circle Lab, a new workshop program which will take place in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in France.
Spearheaded by industry veteran Matthieu Darras, the Full Circle Lab will support six film projects during each session. Selected projects will have to be connected to the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, which spans the West and Southwest France, with colourful cities including Bordeaux and La Rochelle. The Lab is co-headed by Alexis Hofmann, head of acquisitions at Bac Films, and Julie Marnay, who was previously in charge of the selection of short films at Cannes’ Critics Week.
Filmmakers participating in the Full Circle Lab will receive support through the development phase, as well as the post-production and promotion of their movies.
For its inaugural edition, the Full Circle Lab will welcome four projects at script stage and two films in post.

Ahead of her solo debut You and Me, Nancy Wilson released her cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “The Rising,” a tribute to Eddie Van Halen, and the title track about her late mother. It doesn’t arrive until Friday, but you can hear the whole album exclusively in the video above.
At the 16-minute mark — following her cover of Pearl Jam’s “Daughter” — Wilson teams up with Duff McKagan and Taylor Hawkins for “Party at the Angel Ballroom.” The Foo Fighters drummer backs her on vocals along a fiery riff,...

After nearly a half-century of dividing her time between bands like Heart, the Lovemongers, and Roadcase Royale, guitarist Nancy Wilson is finally releasing her debut solo LP. She’s still putting the finishing touches on the album, but she’s tentatively calling it The Lab, and her lead-off single, a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “The Rising,” is available right now.
“Under the conditions we’re all living in now, this song is something that might help people,” Wilson tells Rolling Stone. “It’s a spiritual song and a call to a greater good,...

Mitsuko, a young adult, is soaking in a warm bath. She is also stalking her ex-boyfriend on Instagram (can’t really blame her- the description is quite funnily accurate). He can’t access afterlife; he still has a few songs to finish and perform. She can see him because she is heartbroken and hence ‘half dead’. Canadian hip-hop crew Grvment came to the “World of Dance” Qualifiers with plenty of heart, but also a lot to live up to. This Junior Division troupe is hoping to follow in the footsteps of season two winners The Lab. But first they had to perform for Jennifer Lopez, Ne-Yo and Derek Hough when they thought they were just supposed to be meeting producers for their final audition. So how did they do? Watch their routine above.
See‘World of Dance’ season 4 premiere recap: ‘Qualifiers 1’ ambushed the new contestants when they least expected it [Updating Live Blog]
You could tell the reviews would be mixed from the judges’ initial reactions after the routine ended, which were positive, but not exactly rapturous — they didn’t quite give Lopez goosies. Hough said they did a “nice job,” and it was “well rehearsed,” but there was a point in the routine when he felt the “energy...

A version of this story about Antonio Banderas was first published in the Miniseries/Movies issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
When “Genius” producer Kenneth Biller went to the Spanish town of Málaga to visit Antonio Banderas, he quickly learned the hierarchy. The Andalusian coastal city, he was told on his way in from the airport, has two local heroes who are particularly esteemed by the town in which they were born.
“They explained to me, in Spanish, ‘El primero is Picasso,'” Biller said. “‘El segundo is Antonio.'”
And No. 2 played No. 1. In “Genius: Picasso,” Banderas takes on a role that had long haunted him, and one he’d spent years avoiding, of the protean artist who cast a huge shadow in his hometown, where he grew up during the reign of dictator Francisco Franco.
“Picasso was enormous in Málaga,” Banderas said. “We didn’t have many heroes.

Mubi is showing Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's The Small Back Room (1949), The Tales of Hoffmann (1951) and Michael Powell's Peeping Tom (1960) in November and December, 2017 in the United States in the series Powell & Pressburger: Together and Apart. The story goes that when they were casting their first flat-out masterpiece together, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger sent a letter to an actress outlining a manifesto of their production company, called "the Archers." At the time, the Archers was freshly incorporated, with Powell and Pressburger sharing all credit for writing, directing, and producing, and their manifesto had five points. Point one was to ensure that they provided their financial backers with "a profit, not a loss," which may raise eyebrows among those who are used to manifestos burning with anti-capitalist fire—but then, in a system like commercial cinema, profitability buys freedom.

When Harvey Weinstein was trying to lose weight and visited one of his sets, handlers advised the crew to remove certain foods from the craft service table. With a crew of well over 100 people, the solution wasn’t to provide an enticing, healthy alternative for the visiting boss, who had to be followed with cans of diet soda like a nurse with an oxygen tank. The solution was to eliminate any food that could be a possible temptation. The assumption was clear: Weinstein’s appetite was huge, his discipline nonexistent, and the entire company needed to cater to his shortcomings.
This isn’t meant to be a metaphor to explain the avalanche of sexual assault accusations against Weinstein. It is one of thousands of examples that show how an entire business was built around his failings as a human being. The traits that he forced his staff to account for...

Last year, the Academy rewarded George Miller’s Best-Picture contender “Mad Max: Fury Road” with 10 Oscar nominations and six wins. Jon Favreau’s “The Jungle Book” belongs in the same cinematic groundbreaker category, but partly because Disney marketing wasn’t able to pull the movie out of its family movie ghetto, only the Visual Effects branch of the Academy nominated this wondrous achievement that wowed global moviegoers to the tune of $964 million worldwide.
Favreau and screenwriter Justin Marks took Rudyard Kipling’s classic tales of Mowgli and his brothers and, with help from James Cameron and Martin Scorsese’s go-to VFX master Rob Legato (“Titanic,” “Aviator,” “Hugo”), created a seamlessly natural digital world with many vibrant animal characters — and one live boy (Neel Sethi).

Just as George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” James Cameron’s “Avatar,” Alfonso Cuaron’s “Gravity,” and Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi” were cinematic groundbreakers for the ages, I believe Oscar voters should take Jon Favreau’s “The Jungle Book” more seriously.

“You’re all hearing this the same way?”
It’s 1973, and the streets of New York are swamped with the morning upchuck of a hungover sexual awakening. Vinyl, brainchild of Mick Jagger, Martin Scorsese, Terence Winter, and Rich Cohen, climbs deep into the world of record production in the skin-submersible of one Richard “Richie” Finestra, protagonist and (briefly) narrator. We meet our hero ripping off his car’s rear-view mirror in his hunt for a surface to snort coke off of, a symbolic destruction of introspection and reflection, and leave him staggering like Frankenstein’s monster from the wreckage of a collapsed building. That collapse sequence is the episode’s flourish and its mission statement, a moment so hugely surreal that it flirts with stupidity. The New York Dolls demolishing a building with the power of rock? How easily could that have gone bad, right?
It doesn’t, though. It’s a searing,...

While some Afm buyers were sitting on their wallets and spilling blood this year in hopes of scoring Quentin Tarantino’s Hateful Eight, others were ponying up for the schlock and genre awe that still sells in Santa Monica. This year a new trend brought heat to the halls of the Loews: Ebola. Not just ebola, but ebola zombies. Is anyone out there ready to see ebola spread to the undead?
Here’s one way to defuse the tacky sensationalism of Afm schlock-hawking: Apologize in advance. “Is it too soon?” genre seller Rob Hauschild asked the buyers and lookyloos who stopped, did double takes, and even took selfies with the poster for Ebola Zombies this year. He’d break the ice with a smile and a sheepish shrug. “I’m sorry!”

It has been dismissed over the years as cheesy, cheap and laughable but, as has been the case on many occasions, Hammer Films have had the last laugh. They boast a back-catalogue that is to horror movies what The Rolling Stones’ discography is to rock music. Fifty-nine years after the release of their first horror movie proper (The Quatermass Xperiment), Hammer’s films have survived scrutiny and re-evaluation and have now attained National Treasure status. Moreover, in terms of sheer importance, the Hammer films were some of the most influential of the past half-century. The ripple-effect of their imitators cashing in on their success would beget the careers of some of the biggest names in Hollywood today.
And yet since 1984 Hammer has been a dormant entity, existing only in the memory: a pile of ashes, a cape and a signet ring waiting to be reanimated by the crimson, jugular discharge of some poor,...

As Noah arrives in cinemas, and with Ridley Scott's Exodus around the corner, James ponders the return of the biblical epic...
"Then God said, 'Let there be Industrial Light & Magic'; and there was Industrial Light & Magic." (Genesis: A New Hope. 1:3)
It is the Year of our Lord 2014 (other Lords and religiously-orientated calendar systems are available) and things are getting old-school. To be precise, things are getting Old Testament. They're bringing the Bible back into movie theatres, for this year sees the release of two major movie adaptations of Judeo-Christian scripture.

The upcoming film Backmask is the latest horror effort from Marcus Nispel, a director who went from the world of music videos to genre projects like the television adaptation of Dean Koontz's Frankenstein (2004) and remakes of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th. As someone who has seen Backmask, a project we've been tracking for a while now, I'm now allowed to tell you that I enjoyed it quite a bit. It has a manic energy and polish to it that should please horror fans. I walked away from the film looking at it as a contemporary "Night of the Demons meets Evil Dead" blood-soaked ride that turns a lot of horror tropes on their head.

Martin Scorsese's tale of financial excess holds firm at the box office, pulling ahead of American Hustle and 12 Years a Slave
Wolf pulls ahead
A week ago, contenders for the best picture Oscar American Hustle, 12 Years a Slave and The Wolf of Wall Streetstood more or less neck and neck with around £11m apiece. Now the Scorsese comedy has pulled ahead with just shy of £15m, compared with £13.69m for Slave and £12.2m for Hustle. The Wolf of Wall Street is already the ninth-biggest 18-certificate movie at the UK box-office, behind Hannibal (£21.6m), American Beauty (£21.3m), Seven (£19.5m), Silence of the Lambs (£17.1m), Bruno (£15.8m), Django Unchained (£15.7m), Basic Instinct (£15.5m) and Fatal Attraction (£15.4m). Wolf will very soon overtake the last four films on that list, and has a good shot at £20m lifetime. The Bruno figure includes some box-office for the 15-certificate version. Including Monday takings, Wolf is now at £15.17m.

Aaron Eckhart and Miles Teller have both signed on to star in the Vinny Pazienza boxing biopic, Bleed For This.
Oscar winner Martin Scorsese (The Wolf Of Wall Street) will executive produce the project which Synchronicity Entertainment, the cutting edge division of The Solution Entertainment Group, will sell at the European Film Market in Berlin.
Based on the incredible true story of one of boxing’s most charismatic and exciting figures, Bleed For This centers around Vinny Panzienza (Teller), who quickly shot to stardom when he dominated undefeated champion Gilbert Dele. A near-fatal automobile accident left him with the news that he would never walk again. After months of recovery and against doctors’ orders, Vinny returned to the gym under infamous trainer, Kevin Rooney (Eckhart), and made a triumphant return to the ring just over a year later.

His latest film – I, Frankenstein – took something of a beating from both critics and the box office results, but perhaps that's just helping Aaron Eckhart get in some early training for a future project, signing onto a boxing biopic called Bleed For This that will also star Miles Teller. With Boiler Room writer-director Ben Younger once more scripting and calling the shots, Bleed For This will chart the real-life story of slugger Vinnie Pazienza, who broke his neck in three places in a traffic accident in 1991 while he was at the peak of his career. Against doctors’ orders, Pazienza returned to the gym with his neck still encased in a metal halo, began working out and eventually won three more titles and went on to retire with a 50-10 record. The film boasts Martin Scorsese – no stranger himself to boxing biopics – as executive producer.Despite his fondness for roles where he gets physical,...

Boy, it sure is great to be in the month of February, where movies like I, Frankenstein and That Awkward Moment are a part of our past. Granted, it.s a very recent past, as both films are currently still in theaters, but we.re grateful nonetheless. Stars from both of those movies will soon come together to create what will hopefully be a late fall release, as Aaron Eckhart and Miles Teller are attached to join Bleed for This, a boxing biopic that Martin Scorsese will oversee as executive producer. That.s a good thing, right? Bleed for This will follow the tumultuous life of world champ Vinny Pazienza, with Teller inexplicably taking on the lead role. The way THR explains it, the film will focus on the Pazmanian Devil.s 1991 car accident that nearly killed him and his career, as well as his somewhat miraculous return to the...

Los Angeles (AP) - With Super Bowl Xlvii weekend in full swing, "Ride Along" remained strong, steering Universal Pictures into the No. 1 slot in a surprising three-week takeover at the box office.
Topping multiplex sales since setting a January debut record when opening over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend with $48.6 million, the buddy cop comedy, starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube, made $12.3 million, as it nears a $100 million domestic total, according to studio estimates Sunday.
"I don't think anyone would have seen that coming," Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak, said of "Ride Along."
Despite the looming viewpoint that films with a primarily African-American cast don't do well overseas, the domestic success of "Ride Along" could fuel its popularity overseas.

“The Wolf of Wall Street,” director Martin Scorsese’s black comedy starring Leonardo DiCaprio, was the biggest foreign box-office earner this weekend with $31 million from 27 markets. That raises the international total for “Wolf” to $85 million, not far behind its domestic haul of $98 million, giving it a worldwide total of $183 million. Paramount is distributing the movie here, but its foreign rights are held by multiple distributors. With its bizarre, poorly-explained premise and derivative fantasy action, I, Frankenstein was dead on arrival this weekend. As a result, Ice Cube/Kevin Hart comedy hit Ride Along easily cruised to a second consecutive victory. After setting a new January opening record last weekend, Ride Along fell 49 percent to $21.3 million. Through 10 days, the buddy comedy has banked $75.5 million, and it's on pace to reach $100 million in the next two weeks. Don't be surprised if Ride Along 2 gets formally announced soon.In its third weekend, Lone Survivor dropped 42 percent to $12.9 million. The Afghanistan war drama has now earned $93.9 million, and is on pace to pass Zero Dark Thirty ($95.7 million) sometime this week.Universal Pictures has now held the top two spots for two weekends in a row. According to the studio, that's the first time a distributor has accomplished this feat since Warner Bros. did so in February 1994 with On Deadly Ground...

I, Frankenstein is having a disastrous debut. It was expected to have an $11 to $14 million opening weekend, but it appears the film will fall short of even those low estimates, with $7.75 million. The film is now destined to join 47 Ronin as the latest film to flop in 2014. The budget is estimated to be around $60 million, and that is not including marketing costs. There is a bit of good news, audiences gave the film about Frankenstein's monsters battling gargoyles and demons a B Cinemascore. Better than what Martin Scorsese's Wolf of Wall Street (C) and Spike Jonze's Her (B-) received. Scary! In other box office news: the comedy Ride Along, which stars Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, will pull in $20.5 million this weekend, taking first place in consecutive weekends. It experienced a 51% from last weekend, and now has earned an impressive $74.8 million. Lone Survivor...

This dreaded dump month is only going to look worse considering all the terrific December releases we just saw: Martin Scorsese, Spike Jonze, and the Coen Brothers’s three incredible films; Ron Burgundy’s hilarious return; and David O. Russell‘s pretty good movie. Even with 47 Ronin kind of stinking up the joint, it couldn’t ruin last month’s holiday filmgoing spirit. December ended a satisfying year on a tremendous note. Of course the start of 2014 can’t live up to all those award contenders, not even with I, Frankenstein going to bat for it. Frankenstein’s monster turned pretty boy action hero should at the very least give us something to talk about, but if the trailers are any fair indication, I, Frankenstein is not one of the five must see movies of the month. Here are the films you should kick this new year off with: The Best Movies of 2013 Now (mostly) available. Our...

It is a new year in cinema, at least for everyone who isn.t still coked up from Martin Scorsese.s Wolf of Wall Street. Unfortunately, January tends to be a dumping ground where studios release all of the films that weren.t good enough to push for Oscar consideration or big enough to release during the summer tentpole season. I guess they figure everyone celebrated enough during the holidays and no one needs to get excited for cinema so early in the year. There are some exceptions to the rule here, as Hercules, Frankenstein and Jack Ryan are characters that seem better suited for warm weather releases. Will they be the first blockbusters or 2014, or merely the first batch of disappointments? Take down the Christmas tree and hang those lights on our January preview, which starts off with a bang, or at least a bump in the night. Paranormal...

Last August Dread Central had the opportunity to head up to Toronto, Canada, to visit the set of Screen Gems' upcoming remake of Carrie, and here's Part 1 of our Set Report.
Carrie is a project that first piqued our interest because of the studio's intriguing choice of director for the project: Kimberly Peirce. Peirce is a storyteller not necessarily known for her horror prowess, but she is a filmmaker who has the ability to masterfully tackle challenging and often thought-provoking material alongside some of her more seasoned peers. Her feature film debut was the Oscar-nominated drama Boys Don't Cry, which made people quickly forget that Hilary Swank was also The Next Karate Kid, and her stunning follow-up, the 2008 war-themed drama Stop-Loss, proved that then up-and-coming actor Channing Tatum was more than some kid who could dance.

What if time were running backwards, and the remake of The Evil Dead actually came first? We'll let James explain this one...
Evil Dead is, according to one of its advertising posters, "The most terrifying film you will ever experience". That may be true, but perhaps not because it has brutal psychological and physical horror in a cabin in the dark woods and various other types of harrowing trauma. What might make it the most terrifying film experience is the actual experience of watching a remake of The Evil Dead - not the content we're swallowing, but the concept itself.
The poster also features the words, "A new vision from the producers of the original classic" and there are a couple of key points in that sentence if you break it down. The credibility of the 'new vision' claim can be contested, but I...

Update: Daniel Radcliffe will go from playing upright wizard to creepy assistant. The Harry Potter star is in final talks to play Igor, Dr. Frankenstein's hunchback assistant in 20th Century Fox's Frankenstein.
One can only assume Radcliffe will take inspiration from Dobby in how to say "Master" in the most disconcerting manner.

The appealing thing about it is that it panders to horror fans with a short attention span that don’t always want to sit through a single story line for 90 minutes.
