Robert pleads to stay but the state will no longer fund his treatment. Most of all he wants to stay because of the safety he feels from Vernon who is a dangerous, menacing man that continues to stalk and haunt Roberts mind. The hospital tried numerous times to explain to Robert that the man he fears is only a figment of his overactive imagination however Robert remains firmly convinced that Vernon is real and determined to kill him.
Bumbling across the countryside to evade the continuous visions of the ominous man that he believes wants him dead he constantly encounters mishaps along the way. Robert tries to be discreet to avoid problems but his fish out of water persona stands out making it difficult.
Along the way Robert meets Haley and they travel together. Haley is a young, perky, upbeat girl that is leaving her small town home and controlling boyfriend behind. She finds Roberts antics and tales of a dangerous man that only he can see to be amusing.
Her amusement by the story changes when she also thinks she saw Vernon. Haleys tries to dismiss the thoughts, telling herself that her mind must be playing tricks but that becomes impossible as Vernon has developed into a virtual self sufficient, individual that wants her and Robert dead. Vernon, who was born into reality by Roberts imagination, can only exist if he eliminates his creator so that he may change from an imaginary figure into a living being. Between Robert and Vernon there is only one life space and Vernon intends to claim it for himself at any cost.
Vernon continues to inflict psychological and torturous mayhem on the two as they attempt to flee for their lives. It soon becomes clear that there is no escaping Vernons relentless pursuit. Haley and Robert must fight for their lives. Someone has to go.
