Canadian series "Heartland" has been cleared in 94% of the U.S. by Genesis TV and Film for the fall season.
The CBS, Tribune, Sinclair, Hearst, Lin, Meredith, Nexstar and Belo station groups are the key station groups acquiring the drama. The show is likely to air mostly in weekend primetime slots. No financial details as to license fees per episode were available.
Now filming its fourth season, the series leads in households and all key individual, female and male demos when it airs at 7 p.m. Sundays on pubcaster CBC in Canada.
" 'Heartland' is an addictive and heart-warming family drama, akin to a modern-day 'Little House on the Prairie,' set in the Rocky Mountains with rich production values and a first-rate cast," Genesis president Wayne Lepoff said. "Stations are in need of quality scripted weekly first-run hours like this one, which is a proven performer that...

Pruner to head ACTRA branch
TORONTO -- Canada's largest performers union, the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists, said Wednesday that veteran actor Karl Pruner has been voted in as president of its Toronto branch for a two-year term, replacing fellow actor Richard Hardacre. Pruner, an ACTRA member for 25 years, most recently took part in negotiations with independent producers on workplace rates and conditions. His film and TV credits include Total Recall 2070, The Elizabeth Smart Story and Dick. ACTRA, representing around 13,000 domestic actors, maintains reciprocal relationships with the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, and members of both Hollywood unions can qualify for ACTRA membership when working in Canada.

CBS grabs more young viewers
When it comes to chasing young viewers, NBC is getting some strong competition this month from ... CBS? Healthy numbers for Sunday's telepic The Elizabeth Smart Story -- which held its own against NBC's similarly ripped-from-the-headlines telefilm Saving Jessica Lynch -- have poised the eye for an unlikely second-place finish in the key 18-49 demographic for the current sweep, which ends Nov. 26. CBS, traditionally the oldest-skewing of the Big Four networks, is projecting that when the final weekly numbers are released today, it will tie with NBC in the demo (a 4.6 rating, according to figures from Nielsen Media Research). If so, it will be the first time CBS has been first in a November sweep week since the advent of Nielsen PeopleMeters in 1987. NBC seems in little jeopardy of losing its grip on first place for the sweep overall. The peacock has a 7% demo margin over CBS sweep-to-date and projects that it will carry the sweep by a comfortable one-half of a demo rating point.
