In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week: Justin Timberlake's No Angels, directed by Ti West. Ti West is obsessed with several themes, among them hedonism and the hive-mind of cults. In films as diverse as House of the Devil, The Roost and especially The Sacrament he has explored the nature of cultish behavior. From devil-worshippers (in a Satanic Panic send-up) in House of the Devil, to a Jonestown situation in The Sacrament. According to those who have seen it, MaXXXine, the final chapter in his X-trilogy, also returns to this well. Likewise, in films like the X-trilogy, House of the Devil ,but also an earlier (disowned) film like Cabin Fever 2 , he...

Justin Timberlake has had a multifaceted career, full of talent and charisma. Once a member of the popular boy band Nsync, he quickly took the world by storm with his soulful voice and catchy lyrics. However, Timberlake has been arrested on the charges of intoxicated driving and was arrested in Sag Harbor, New York, on Tuesday morning.

The cops arrested him after he was pulled over when he drove through a stop sign while failing to stay on the right side of the road. The entire incident seems unbelievable because the fans never expected to see him in cuffs.
Though he was released with bail after being charged with his crime, the entire incident has left his wife, Jessica Biel grief-stricken, where she had shared a heartfelt post before the arrest of her spouse.

The pair will play friends Jess and Liz in the “tense and compelling” six-part psychological thriller, which also stars Shelley Conn and Emily Taaffe. Who says the pop star is dead? At his triumphant tour stop in Los Angeles Saturday night, Justin Timberlake led a revival for the reigning Prince of Pop, with a setlist of greatest hits and new material that proves the Grammy-winning entertainer is here to stay.
Timberlake took the stage shortly after 9 p.m. at Kia Forum in Inglewood, for the tenth stop on his Forget Tomorrow World Tour, and the second of two nights in L.A. The sold-out tour, in support of his sixth studio album, Everything I Thought It Was, was billed as a chance for fans to hear songs from the new LP along with “everyone’s favorite hits,” and Timberlake expertly blended them into a two-hour, feel-good fest.
Dressed in a glittery black suit and trousers, the singer opened with “No Angels,” a disco-lite cut off Eitiw that immediately had the crowd on its feet.

Listening to Justin Timberlake’s Everything I Thought It Was feels like plugging your headphones into a giant gray styrofoam block. While the album manages to steer clear of the misguided Americana pitfalls of 2018’s Man of the Woods, it instead delivers a sound that’s devoid of a distinct artistic identity. Its predecessor at least found Timberlake daring to venture into new territory and trying make a statement of some kind, no matter how ridiculous.
Everything I Thought It Was’s lead single, “Selfish,” is an underwhelmingly mopey nice-guy anthem marked by humming organs and pre-programmed drum patterns. Timberlake’s vocal performance emits small doses of insecurity that feel sincere and unaffected, but one would be hard-pressed to remember a lead single from a major star with a chorus this weak or production choices this humdrum.
The same can be said for “Drown,” which aims something in the “Cry...

You might know Monday night’s host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! from … Justin Timberlake. This is a fact since the singer who subbed for Kimmel told the audience: “Welcome to Jimmy Kimmel Live!, I’m going to be your host tonight, Justin Timberlake.” [Huge applause.] “Now you all might know me from … being … Justin Timberlake.” [Dampened applause.]But don’t worry, Timberlake, being Timberlake, saved the moment the way Timberlake does best with a charming callback to the previous Oscars and calling for a rimshot to a joke about Joey Fatone hitting him.

‘NSync fans might want to sit down for this one. After teasing a possible collaboration on TikTok last week, Justin Timberlake has confirmed that he has linked up with his former bandmates on a new track for his upcoming album Everything I Thought It Was. The new track is called “Paradise” and is the second to last song on the album.
In the cheeky TikTok video, a fan asked him to blink twice to confirm if ‘NSync is on a song called “Paradise,” and Timberlake pulled his sunglasses down to oblige.

London outfit the Big Pink have released another new song, “Rage,” which will appear on their first album in 10 years, The Love That’s Ours, out Sept. 30 via Project Melody Music.
“Rage” is a steady, shimmering bit of immersive shoegaze balanced by some energetic jolts, like the clattering drums and the way singer/guitarist Robbie Furze sings the chorus, “So rage/Against the day/You know there is no wasted time/I know I’m not wasting mine.” ‘Rage” also arrives with a music video directed by Irmak Altiner.

To lose ourselves in a world of winks and wisecracks from quick-witted showgirls, ditzy heiresses and fast-talking career women may seem like a borderline irresponsible choice in These Troubled Times. But the blast of pure pleasure that is the Berlin Film Festival’s 27-movie tribute to Mae West, Rosalind Russell and Carole Lombard is an act of cinematic self-care with a precedent. The “No Angels” Retrospective, which co-ordinator Annika Haupts says was conceived as “mood-lightening” counter-programming during Germany’s first corona lockdown, comprises comedies that were themselves developed during America’s Great Depression. Spanning 1932 to 1943, there are ordained classics like “My Man Godfrey,” “His Girl Friday,” “Twentieth Century,” “To Be or Not to Be” and “The Women.” But there’s also a trove of less well-known treasures, united by irreverence and leading ladies whose charisma transforms the contrivances of Hayes Code-era Hollywood into escapism so effervescent it froths the blues away.

The 2021 festival will take place in two parts.
The Berlin International Film Festival has unveiled the first films selected for its 2021 edition which will take place in two parts, starting with the industry-focused, online-only event from March 1-5.
They are the titles that will comprise the Generation and Retrospective strands, and come nearly two months later than last year’s equivalent announcement as organisers prepare to host the first virtual edition of the festival.
A second event, titled Summer Special, is scheduled to run June 9-20 and set to include physical screenings of the selection and their filmmakers, at 10 venues in Berlin.

The planned adaption of Mervyn Peake’s “Gormenghast” book series has found a home at Showtime.
The premium cabler has given the project a script-to-series order and will co-produce along with Fremantle, with a writers room set to be opened soon. Fremantle announced last year that they were developing a series based on the books.
The books center on the inhabitants of the city-sized castle Gormenghast. Its denizens are only vaguely aware of how or why the castle came to be, but over the course of the series the powers that have held the castle in place are challenged and the ensuing disruptions reveal its fantastical secrets.
Toby Whithouse will serve as executive producer and showrunner. Neil Gaiman, Akiva Goldsman, Dante Di Loreto, Oliver Jones, Barry Spikings, and David Stern will also executive produce.
Whithouse previously created the BBC series “Being Human,” with an American version airing on Syfy in the U.

Could Toby Whithouse be the next Doctor Who showrunner? “No-one has asked me, no-one has approached me,” he has said…
There’s no indication that Steven Moffat will be leaving Doctor Who any time soon. He’s signed in at least until the end of series 10, and recently it’s been suggested that series 10 might not land until 2017. Naturally, though, these facts haven’t slowed down speculation of who the next showrunner should be.
On a lot of people’s wishlists would be Toby Whithouse, the Being Human, No Angels and The Game creator who has had a decent road-testing in Who writing over the last few years. He wrote Sarah Jane’s comeback adventure School Reunion for David Tennant’s Doctor, and The Vampires Of Venice, The God Complex and A Town Called Mercy for Matt Smith’s incarnation. Ordinary Lies has become one of BBC One's most talked-about new drama series of 2015, with viewers hooked as writer Danny Brocklehurst weaved in-and-out of the lives of the staff at Js car dealership.

Dooley spoke to Digital Spy about what to expect from the dramatic climax... and whether Ordinary Lies come could back for a second series.

Fox’s Lucifer pilot has bagged its horned antihero in the shape of Welsh actor, Tom Ellis. Known for his extensive television work in the UK, Ellis made waves in a variety of popular British shows including No Angels, Merlin, Rush and Miranda. He will soon be packing his bags for the sunny climes of Los Angeles as he prepares for his latest small screen performance as king of hell, Lucifer Morningstar.
Late last year, when the show was granted an initial pilot commitment, it was expected that it would stick closely to the comic series. Created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Keith and Mike Dringenberg, the original DC Comics-run centers on Lucifer who, “bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, resigns his throne and abandons his kingdom for the gorgeous, shimmering insanity of Los Angeles, where he opens an exclusive piano bar called Lux.”

The sheer volume of British television shows that receive the U.S. reboot treatment continues to baffle me, mainly because the majority are often massive flops. Much like the recent Guardians Of The Galaxy Chinese subtitle issue, wherein the nuanced comedy was lost in translation, a similar fate often befalls British shows headed across the pond. Still, we can hold out hope that ABC Studios and Amblin TV won’t make a complete balls-up of No Angels.
The dramedy is being spearheaded by producer Julie Anne Robinson (Suburgatory), who is no stranger to the naughty antics of those Northern nurses. Robinson directed two episodes of the original series, which followed four nurses who work and live together. It began airing in 2004 and ran for two seasons, which wasn’t nearly enough in my opinion.

Four increasing funds for movies, drama
LONDON -- Channel Four chief executive Andy Duncan pledged to pump additional cash into movies and drama at the broadcaster Wednesday. Duncan, speaking at an evening reception to herald the Channel's three Festival de Cannes entries and part of its upcoming movie production slate, told a room packed with British movie execs and stars the broadcaster would provide an undisclosed amount of extra cash for its drama and movie output this year. He said the extra cash would be in addition to the channel's annual £10 million budget and would partly be made available from cash freed up by the broadcaster's failure to renew cricket rights. "We will be making more cash available and we are committed to supporting new talent," said Duncan. On hand to hear the announcement was Pathe U.K. managing director Francois Ivernel and his deputy Cameron McCracken, indie producers Andrew Eaton and Andrea Calderwood, U.K. Film Council chief executive John Woodward, Forrest Whittaker and the cast of hit Channel Four shows Green Wing and No Angels. Alongside Channel Four head of film and drama Tessa Ross, Duncan told the industry partygoers that he wanted to make FilmFour the first stop for British talent, declaring it more attractive for such talent than the BBC because "we have an edge that the BBC doesn't have." FilmFour has three directorial debut movies selected in various sidebars of the upcoming Cannes shindig including James Marsh's The King, starring Gael Garcia Bernal, William Hurt and Laura Harring in Un Certain Regard.

'Shameless' tops Indie nods
LONDON -- U.K. film and television indie production house Company Pictures picked up the lion's share of honors at the annual Indie Awards held Thursday night at London's Saatchi Gallery. The awards, which celebrate the output of independent TV producers, are voted on by the members of the Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television. Company, the producer of such films as The Life and Death of Peter Sellers and Morvern Callar, picked up the best drama award for Channel 4's Shameless, beating out competition from Kudos Films' espionage thriller Spooks and World Prods.' nursing drama No Angels. The Paul Abbott-scripted, semi-autobiographical drama about the sprawling and chaotic life of a working family from the northern city of Manchester picked up the Indie prize for best program.
