One Shot is a series that seeks to find an essence of cinema history in one single image of a movie. The mirror reflects a curious and alarming scene: in the foreground, Mozelle, a young woman, and Eve, a little girl, gaze wide-eyed at the men standing behind them. One of the men holds a gun to the chest of the other. The shot embodies the seamless ambition of Kasi Lemmons’s directorial debut Eve’s Bayou (1997), the tale of the Batistes, a haunted Creole family plagued by the careless philandering of their patriarch. Eve (Jurnee Smollett) has already caught her father making love to his mistress—a poorly kept secret in any case—but by now rage has eclipsed heartbreak as she helplessly watches her family unravel. Her aunt Mozelle (Debbi Morgan) seeks to impart upon the child an unconventional lesson in grace by revealing her own past infidelity: she had planned,...

Artless, unconversant with nuance or subtlety and fond of hitting every nail right on the head, Blue Bayou nonetheless gets to the nitty-gritty and some of the most vexing emotional issues surrounding immigration. As contrived and ham-fisted as it may be much of the time, this Universal/Focus Features Un Certain Regard entry triggered one of strongest audience reactions seen this year in Cannes, so there could be some hungry young viewers out there waiting for just such topically-themed and just-different-enough melodrama.
The closest recent comparison one could make to Blue Bayou would be Minari, the Oscar-winning Sundance favorite about a Korean family trying to make a go of it in the rural U.S. But where that period drama exuded warmth and ultimate optimism, this new drama set in the New Orleans area, operates in considerably more dicey territory, due both to the more questionable environs and the heavy hand of the law.

It’s so easy to write off a villain as a monster or as the boogyman that doesn’t have any emotions. Maybe we see these malefactors as a someone who doesn’t even have the right to feel. Sociopaths are easy to hate or brush off as you close your eyes after a night filled with cold-blooded slasher films.
What about the killers that feel guilt? Not the repentant distracted drivers and carried-away burglars, but those rare serial killers that feel the pangs of their conscience after they’ve taken a life. Don’t think they exist? Take a look at A Horrible Way to Die and then decide.
Convicted serial killer Garrick Turrell (Aj Bowen Creepshow 3, The House of the Devil) has just escaped from prison, in search of the girl that turned him in: his ex-girlfriend Sarah (Amy Seimetz The Off-Hours). Throughout his venture, Turrell leaves bodies galore in his wake,...

After playing the Toronto International Film Festival, one of the more highly anticipated films at this year’s Fantastic Fest was A Horrible Way To Die. We had a chance to sit down with Aj, Simon, Adam, and Travis to discuss the film, its influences for the character of Garrick Turrell, and the overall state of independent horror and how these films should be shot.

There are bad movies, and then there are bad movies. And then theres Birdemic. Shot in Northern California for a budget that apparently consisted mostly of expired bus tokens, the film tells the tale of a small town besieged by exploding eagles and acid-spewing vultures. Except none of that even happens until the movies more than halfway over. The first half of the movie is mostly about how this guy Rod is a really good software salesman. But whatever. Leading the proceedings an incongruous veneer of respectability is lead actress Whitney Moore, whose performance often seems like its been edited in from another, better film. Prior to the threatened commercial release of Birdemic in late 2009, strange, increasingly isolated screenwriter Simon Barrett (Dead Birds, Frankenfish) spoke on the phone with Whitney Moore, who is now 20 years old and attending West Valley College, regarding her work in the movie.

Filmmaker/FX artist Robert Hall sent along some additional information on his web series Fear Clinic, elaborating on his previous comments here. This time, he’s got details on just who the genre heavy hitters in the cast, Kane Hodder and Danielle Harris, are playing, and also provided a new pair of exclusive behind-the-scenes pics (see ’em below).
The show, scripted by Aaron Drane, revolves around the genius Dr. Andover (played by Robert Englund), whose mission in life is to cure mankind’s phobias using his Fear Chamber, a device that can bring your worst terrors to life. “Danielle plays Susan, Dr. Andover’s oldest patient,” Hall explains, “whom he just can’t seem to cure of her scotophobia [fear of the dark], and it makes him obsessive. Kane plays Villatoro, a renegade orderly who works for Englund’s character and butts heads with him—often.” Other actors involved include Lucas Till from Hall...

Cult of the Week: Volume 12 It’s tough to be straight-edge. By virtue of being drug- and alcohol-free, the whole world thinks you’re some Christian hardcore kid from Boston who only speaks in Minor Threat lyrics. But on the other hand, you do get to picture the whole world as some sort of decadent, liverish imbecile, lounging about in its own sick while giggling moronically at passing shadows and shiny reflections. In this eternal struggle, we straight-edgers are blessed with mental clarity, rarefied by haughty elitism and unmarred by dignity-sapping Facebook photos of drunken Nickleback sing-alongs. But the bleary-eyed masses have a secret weapon: the drug movie [1]. There are two main types of drug films. The first is the stoned, peace-and-love, cars-that-run-on-organic-hopes-and-smiles hippie bullshit, like Dazed and Confused, Easy Rider, and every documentary that uses the phrase “quantum theory of possibilities.” Thankfully, while annoying, these films are fairly harmless,...
