Host Kevin O'Connor was a homeowner in Boston who had asked the producers for help. They liked what they saw, and had him back on camera a couple of times as screen tests. He was then offered the job, when the current host at the time Steve Thomas, wanted to move on to other projects.
The complete first season of Ask This Old House was released on DVD in 2004.
