The heated debate over the awards ceremony of this year’s Berlin Film Festival shows no signs of cooling down.
On Tuesday, German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann called out the Berlinale for allowing what he called “antisemitic” statements to go unchallenged at the awards gala in Berlin Saturday night. Speaking to newspapers of Germany’s Funke media group, Buschmann said the film festival “suffered serious damage” as a result and suggested there could be criminal consequences for some of the statements and slogans.
The awards ceremony for the 74th Berlinale turned sharply political as one award winner after another used their festival platform to call out the Israeli government for its actions in the war in Gaza.
Ben Russell, co-director of Direct Action, winner of the best film in Berlin’s Encounters sidebar, used the word “genocide” to describe Israeli military action in the region. Palestinian filmmaker Basel Adra, whose...

The Berlin Film Festival said Monday that it has filed criminal charges following the hacking of its Panorama section’s Instagram social media site, which was used to post antisemitic messages.
After a politically charged edition, festival organizers also attempted to distance the Berlinale management from the stances taken by some of the awards winners at Saturday’s closing ceremony.
The organizers said on Sunday, the day after the festival concluded, “The Instagram channel of the Berlinale Panorama section was briefly hacked and antisemitic image-text posts about the Middle East war with the Berlinale logo were posted on the channel. These statements do not originate from the festival and do not represent the festival’s stance.”
Organizers added: “The Berlinale condemns this criminal act in the strongest possible terms and has deleted the posts and launched an investigation. In addition, the Berlinale has filed criminal charges against unknown persons. The...

A high-politicized edition of the Berlin Film Festival ended Saturday, but divisions surrounding political messaging during the festival appear to be ongoing.
Sunday afternoon, the official Berlinale shared a statement on its social media account announcing that it plans to “file criminal charges against unknown persons” who it said shared “posts about the war in the Middle East.” The posts mentioned by the festival were shared on the official Berlinale Panorama Instagram account and featured a series of infographics.
“Genocide is Genocide. We are all complicit,” the first infographic said.
Another post claimed that festival staff had decided to “shed the idea that German guilt absolves us of our country’s history or our current crimes,” and in turn, they have decided to call for an “immediate and permanent ceasefire” to violence in Gaza.
The posts ended with the message: “From our unresolved Nazi past to our genocidal present — we...

Mati Diop’s documentary Dahomey, about artefacts being returned from Paris to present-day Benin, was awarded the Golden Bear for best film at the Berlin International Film Festival tonight (February 24).
The film, handled internationally by Les Film du Losange, is the second from the African continent to take the Berlinale’s top prize after Mark Dornford-May’s musical U-Carmen eKhayelitsha in 2005. It is also the second year in a row that a documentary has clinched the Golden Bear, following Nicolas Philibert’s On The Adamant last year.

Berlinale co-directors Carlo Chatrian and Mariette Rissenbeek are going out with a bang in their final year, with a lineup unveiled today featuring the latest works by Olivier Assayas, Bruno Dumont, Mati Diop, Hong Sang-soo, Abderrahmane Sissako, Jane Schoenbrun, Alonso Ruizpalacios, Matias Pineiro, Travis Wilkerson, Kazik Radwanski, Annie Baker, and more.
When the co-directors were asked by Screen Daily about their departure, Chatrian said, “It’s quite simple. Mariette and I had a mandate of five years. It is true that at the beginning I said that I was willing to go on because there was a shared will with the [German] Ministry [of Culture] to go on. But then the people who have the responsibility to see the future of the Berlinale thought this structure of two leaders was not the right one and I don’t consider myself able to run the festival alone. And that was the decision of the Ministry.

I was just thinking the other day, "Man. It has been some time since I saw Jackie Chan get paired up with a wise-cracking Gweilo". And then it got me to thinking, "Man. It has been a while since I saw Seann William Scott get paired up with an action star who could whip his ass six ways from Sunday for being such a wise-cracker". And lo and behold the universe must have been listening, because the following announcement came to the world (i.e. our email account) yesterday via press release:Renny Harlin To Direct Action Comedy "Skiptrace" Starring Jackie Chan And Seann William SCOTTTo which I said to myself, "Okay. That could be a lot of fun. But if there is anything that previous Jackie Chan/Gweilo...

Alex Cross helmer Rob Cohen has a new job! We’ve just learned that Cohen is set to direct another action adventure movie titled Crash Bandits for Nu Image/Millennium. In case this already sounds familiar to you, let us first remind you that once upon a time, the project had John McTiernan on board to direct and Hayden Christensen to star. At this moment we know that Cohen will direct the movie from a script (originally) written by Michael Stokes which will revolve around: …the rivalry between two treasure hunters who specialize in salvaging old plane wrecks. When they get a beat on the ultimate prize,...

Hello, everyone! After last week, I figured it’d only be fair that I give Wizard World a little hand up, since I was so quick to toss them into the gutter. Suffice to say I saw a ton of responses via Facebook, Twitter, etc. in support of my disappointing feelings at this past Wizard World Chicago. So, with all eyes from their ivory tower now squarely pointed at me*, I shall make an epic journey for Wizard, giving them the laundry list of things I’d like to see them do to reclaim their former convention glory.
Remember what started this whole shebang – comic books. Just because you can’t lay claim to the publishing giants does not mean with some delicate planning, you can’t land the amazing creators behind said publishers. Suffice to say, if you bring them, the fans will come. People love Marvel and DC.

Chicago – When I had my hands-on experience with Sony’s PlayStation Vita a few weeks before its release, one of the most interesting new games was Sony’s “Unit 13,” the first shooter for the platform. It seemed to make a perfect fit for the new system as it blended traditional expectations of the third-person shooter genre with touch screen functionality and an emphasis on online play. Now that I’ve spent some time with the game at home, it still features a number of those strengths but some weaknesses of the system drag it down. It’s a good start but there’s definite room for improvement when it comes to shooters on the Vita.
Video Game Rating: 3.5/5.0
“Unit 13” is divided into missions, some are heavily focused on stealth while others are timed assaults on specific targets. There is little overall story to the piece as Zipper Interactive...

Although hulking man of action Dolph Lundgren’s been busily making lots of films since his glory days in the 80s and 90s, it was great to see him appear in The Expendables, 2010’s explosive box of macho fireworks which starred too many other geek favourites to list here.
With The Expendables 2 now in post production, Lundgren’s all set to start shooting on his next film - a sci-fi horror action mash-up called Battle Of The Damned. News of this film actually seeped out a couple of weeks ago, and I’m ashamed to say it slipped right past me - a terrible oversight, it turns out, since the its premise sounds gloriously daft.
