A new episode of the Revisited video series has just made its way online, and with this one we’re celebrating the birthday of the late, great director Tobe Hooper by looking at one of his more underrated horror films: the 2004 release Toolbox Murders (watch it Here)! You can hear all about it in the embed above.
Toolbox Murders is technically a remake of the 1978 film The Toolbox Murders, but it’s very different from the source material. Written by Jace Anderson and Adam Gierasch, this one has the following synopsis: Young couple Steve and Nell move into a once fashionable, but now decaying, apartment block in Los Angeles, and soon realise that a number of young female residents have met unusually violent deaths. Before long, Nell makes some disturbing discoveries about the building’s manager and her fellow tenants.
The film stars Angela Bettis, Brent Roam, Marco Rodríguez, Rance Howard,...

Sam Raimi is changing up the Evil Dead films. The other films were usually set in the usual places like a cabin in the middle of the woods, a medieval castle, or a retail store’s storage room. This time, the evil Necronomicon is plopped down in the middle of a city, inside an apartment building. This brings an interesting take on the new film Evil Dead Rise. How do you escape the evil when you’re confined to a single apartment? Let’s see if they took some notes from some of the best apartment horror films.
Critters 3 (1991)
This film stars an Oscar winner! The one and only Leonardo DiCaprio plays Josh. Before returning home to the big city, his family stops at a rest area. They don’t know that some newly hatched Crites have stowed away in their vehicle. Once they return to their apartment building,...

Rob Zombie’s reboot of The Munsters opens with Dr. Henry Augustus Wolfgang and his assistant Floop hanging out in a graveyard looking for the zombified remains of the world’s greatest pianist. He needs its hands for the project he’s working on, building the perfect man.
That segues into an introduction to the rest of the crew. The Count throws his back out rising from his coffin and his servant Igor who has to fix it. Lily who, in a nod to Type O Negative, is on a date with Nosferatu. And Lester a werewolf who seems to be estranged from his father. What about Herman? Of the many wonderful things found in writer/director Brea Grant’s 12 Hour Shift last year, chief among them was the return of star Angela Bettis to genre movies. Once a prolific presence in indie horror—thanks in large part to her frequent collaborations with writer/director Lucky McKee—the Texas-born Bettis had stepped away from horror for several years following her turn in McKee’s The Woman and a brief role on Tom Holland’s anthology Twisted Tales. She continued to act, but was sorely missed in the genre. Thanks to Grant and 12 Hour Shift, Bettis is back.
It’s the aforementioned working relationship with Lucky McKee for which most horror fans probably know Bettis best. A working actor on television, film, and even Broadway for several years before she was cast in May in 2002, it was her role as the title character in McKee’s feature...

David Gordon Green on his lifelong passion for Halloween and why he only would make the movie if he could return to the source.
When I catch up with writer-director David Gordon Green, it is the day before Halloween’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. While he’d previously screened some sizzling footage of Michael Myers on a killing spree in Haddonfield (an artist in his element), in a matter of hours Green, writing partner Danny McBride, producer Jason Blum, and a number of the stars, including the scream queen, Jamie Lee Curtis, would reveal the whole movie to the world and press.
Of course now it all seems kismet with how well well-received this Halloween revival has been, from those early reviews to the deafening box office, but at the time Green was just even-keeled and happy to talk about Halloween like he would any other movie.

Here we are: the first Masters of Horror episode from my favorite filmmaker of all time: the late, great Tobe Hooper.
Season 1, Episode 3: “Dance of the Dead”
Director: Tobe Hooper
Original Air Date: November 11th, 2005
One of the coolest things about the Showtime anthology series Masters of Horror is that, in addition to codifying who many of the genre “masters” were (though it didn’t cover all of them; there were no episodes directed by Wes Craven or George Romero or David Cronenberg or a handful of other greats), the series gave opportunities to filmmakers that had fallen somewhat out of the pop culture consciousness to remind fans that they still had it—they just had to be given the chance. Nowhere is this better exemplified than in the case of Tobe Hooper, who was something of a punching bag in the horror genre when his season 1 episode aired.

Guest reviewer Lee Broughton covers a trio of grisly horrors. The Toolbox Murders, Blood Harvest and A Cat in the Brain each feature a pop culture icon in a leading role. Hollywood actor Cameron Mitchell, oddball 1960s crooner Tiny Tim and the Italo horror director and all-round enfant terrible Lucio Fulci find themselves caught up in their own gory and disturbing splatter show. Perhaps unsurprisingly, all three films fell foul of the British Board of Film Classification at the time of their original release in the UK.

Tobe Hooper, who died over the weekend at 74, was a leader in the Vietnam-era boom in independent, ultra-violent horror films. His 1974 “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” is considered the last in a trio of low-budget horror breakouts that included George Romero’s 1968 “Night of the Living Dead” and Wes Craven’s 1972 “Last House on the Left.”
Though grosses for these films were unreliably reported, “Texas” appears to have done the best. Its reported $30 million domestic take (adjusted, around $140 million today) was at least 100 times its budget (also a guess, though some reports have it as high as $300,000 in 1974 value). Producers recouped costs and little else from distributor Bryanston (best known for the Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey’s “Frankenstein” and “Dracula” movies, as well as taking over distribution of “Deep Throat”).
Like Romero and Craven, the hit boosted Hooper’s career. But unlike his peers, Hooper struggled to establish his brand after “Texas.

Tobe Hooper, the director of horror classics like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Poltergeist, died Saturday in Sherman Oaks, California at the age of 74.
The Los Angeles County Coroner confirmed Hooper's death to Variety. No cause of death was provided.
While teaching college and making documentaries and TV commercials in his native Austin, Texas, Hooper gathered a cast of his students and fellow teachers to create a low-budget, Ed Gein-inspired horror film about a group of teenagers tormented by a family of cannibals and the chainsaw-wielding "Leatherface."

Violent sorta-sequel Toolbox Murders 2 gets UK DVD release. The month of August is off to a great start in terms of DVD and Blu-ray releases as fans have an interesting variety of horror and sci-fi titles to look forward to on Tuesday, August 4th. One of my personal favorite zombie movies as of late, Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead, will be making its home entertainment bow and we’ve also got a handful of other notable titles, including The Last Survivors, Lake Placid Vs. Anaconda, Into the Grizzly Maze, Joe Dante’s Burying the Ex and the fest-favorite documentary, The Nightmare.
And as if a new Dante film isn’t enough to be excited about, Warner Home Video is finally releasing a Blu-ray of Dante’s 1987 sci-fi comedy, Innerspace, on August 4th too.

It would be easy to call the pulpy revenge thriller The Equalizer a standard action movie. It has all the trappings of a tired Hollywood genre effort: a loner with a mysterious past, a young hooker with a heart of gold that provides the catalyst for his return to action, and an army of sneering Russian gangsters for our hero to dispatch in all variety of gruesome manner. Put these elements in the hands of someone like Brett Ratner or another Hollywood hack and you’ve got the makings of a mundane, lifeless drama. But thanks to star Denzel Washington and his talented director Antoine Fuqua (who directed Washington to his Training Day Oscar), what should be tired and tenuous has a weird, electrifying life all its own. Sure, there are moments when The Equalizer overdoses on bullets and explosions and the cliché-heavy script by Richard Wenk offers one too many convenient contrivance,...

You have to respect the workmanlike filmmakers who keep working in our beloved horror department. Say what you will -- be it kind of critical -- of the films of Adam Gierasch and Jace Anderson. but there's always something to be said for indie-friendly horror freaks who simply keep churning out the movies. (Their better efforts include Autopsy (2008) and their early and underrated remake of The Toolbox Murders from 2004, although Mortuary, Night of the Demons, and Fertile Ground have their fans as well.)
And hey, the latest collaboration between Gierasch (director) and Anderson (co-writer) is a solid little combo of good ol' occult-based horror nastiness and an appreciable dose of downbeat film noir moodiness. While it has a few solid moments of straight scares and impressive gore, Fractured works best as a low-key character piece that feels like a respectful homage to The Outer Limits or Alan Parker's Angel Heart.

As a token of his appreciation for the tremendous support his short film The Graveyard Feeder received during its festival run, director/co-writer Rich Robinson has posted it online in its entirety.
You can watch it below, but first here are the details on The Graveyard Feeder, which is in the process of being turned into a feature-length version.
In addition to co-writing (with Aaron Beck and Jeff Stepp) and directing the film, Robinson co-produced the project with Stepp, who also served as director of photography. Starr Jones (Lincoln, The Toolbox Murders) did the special F/X work and production design while Josh Chase (Take Shelter) did the sound design. Mick Hitz of the Big Wheel Production Group was the executive producer, and the rockabilly group The Bloody Jug Band contributed music for the soundtrack.

Aliens’ Bishop is set to play a priest.
The eternally awesome Lance Henriksen, who has worked on some the biggest genre films of all time, will star in the supernatural/horror/thriller Nevermore.
According to THR, “The movie centers on a couple who experience paranormal activity involving dead children when they move to an estate in Massachusetts. Henriksen will play a parish priest whom the couple turn to, but the move is a mistake because the priest already knows all about resurrected children."
Of course he knows about the resurrected children. He’s Lance Henriksen. He probably resurrected those kids himself, for some kind of sick, satanic ritual.
Dean C. Jones, who worked on The Toolbox Murders, is writing and directing Nevermore. Jones also made Coffin Baby with Henriksen, watch the trailer below.

Like most horror fans, I'm not always pro remake. There are some films that simply should not be remade. However, I am supportive of remaking a film if the creative team behind the reboot can bring something new to the table or improve upon what the original film did, in some way. Case in point, Tobe Hooper improved on the source material in his 2004 remake of The Toolbox Murders. Hooper's remake was a more cohesive film than the original and was more effective at keeping its viewer engaged throughout the film. The original was poorly paced with the entire middle of the film being exhaustively sluggish. As for bringing something new to the table, James Gunn and Zak Snyder didn't outdo the original Dawn of the Dead with their 2004 reimagining, but that's not what the duo was trying for. Instead, they provided a highly enjoyable companion piece with their reboot...

There’s something irresistibly robust and nasty about the title, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Rolling beautifully off the tongue, it hints at all kinds of horrific and violent acts - and it certainly sounds more violent and exploitative than Tobe Hooper’s 1974 movie actually was.
Far from just another gore-drenched slasher movie, Hooper’s Texas Chain Saw was more about the threat of violent death than its graphic depiction; his use of sound, editing and careful framing made the few murders really count, and made viewers think they’d seen something far nastier and brutal than they really had.
If anything, Hooper was rather too successful in this regard. In spite of his movie’s relative restraint, critics decried...

The main reason that most horror fans complain when they hear about remakes is, well, they enjoy the original films, and they know how this machine works by now: a new (and usually terrible) horror film uses the title (and perhaps the basic premise) of a well-known (or at least "known") older film -- and even a mild fan of the horror genre knows that most of the recent remakes are mediocre, bad, or plain old awful. Making matters worse is that producers rarely seem to try anything "new" with these remakes; just the same old generic package that leaves the loyal patrons of scary cinema wondering why anyone bothered.
But about 2 out of 5 horror remakes are what one could call watchable, decent, or surprisingly good, and most of these remakes have something in common: A) they started out by choosing an "original" horror movie that's a real piece of junk,...

How seriously do you think I take Halloween? Well, I’m fairly frickin’ anal retentive anyway, so I need to book my viewing in advance. I mean I’ll deviate from my itinerary, but I at least need a plan. I can’t be the only one out there with a stick up his ass. So this October/Halloween Season I figured we needed a little guidance. There’s too many damn channels on the cable box, no horror hosts and shit for advertising. So let me be your TV Guide… Keeper.

Who knows exactly how it got out, however some professionally shot behind-the-scenes footage from the Carrie remake has made its way onto the web. One of B-d's viewers pointed them to an unmentioned origin for the footage.
Chloe Moretz and Gabriella Wilde - as Carrie and Sue, respectively - are featured in the scene which is set poolside. As you'll see on the film slate, the director of photography is Steve Yedlin - he shot May (another misfit tale), the forthcoming Looper, Toolbox Murders and Brick.
Kimberly Peirce is directing the Stephen King adaptation up in Toronto as we speak. Julianne Moore, Judy Greer, Portia Doubleday and Ansel Elgort also star.

This entry is no different as we focus on the New York Horror Film Productions micro budget soon to be classic, Big Box, VHS/DVD combo package, The Turnpike Killer. Bodies dumped along the New Jersey Turnpike and murders originating in New York City… this is pretty much par for the course around here. The 2004 shocker The Toolbox Murders makes its long-awaited big-screen debut (locally at least) this weekend when it plays at the Tivoli Theater in St. Louis Friday and Saturday nights at midnight as part of the Tivoli’s Reel Late series. Brent Roam, one of the film’s stars and a St. Louis native, will be attending both nights to answer questions and sign autographs.
The Toolbox Murders tells the tale of Nell and Steven Burrows (Angela Bettis and Brent Roam), who move to Los Angeles to start a new life together. When they move into the Lusman Building, a historic Hollywood apartment complex, Nell and Steven find themselves caught into a web of terrifying evil. A ruthless killer lurks inside, somehow moving sight unseen from apartment to apartment murdering various unsuspecting victims. Yeah, we’re cheating on our beloved decade of decadence. The Sleeper is not a movie from the 1980′s, but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t have the look, feel, soundtrack, costumes design and dialogue down pat. It even comes as a special edition red VHS tape with big box packaging equipped with all the subtle nuisances of the video store rental experience (more on that later). It Came From 1980 X does not discriminate against films of any generation as long as they embody the spirit of hyper color and slap like a bracelet.
Synopsis:
It’s 1981 and the girls of Alpha Gamma Theta sorority are having a party. Amy, sick of living in the dorms, invites her roommate Ava to attend the party with her in hopes that they’ll both become Thetas. As the girls arrive, so does an uninvited guest watching them in the shadows.

"The film which you are about to see is an account of the tragedy which befell a group of five youths, in particular Sally Hardesty and her invalid brother, Franklin. It is all the more tragic in that they were young. But, had they lived very, very long lives, they could not have expected, nor would they have wished to see, as much of the mad and macabre as they were to see that day. For them an idyllic summer afternoon drive became a nightmare. The events of that day were to lead to the discovery of one of the most bizarre crimes in the annals of American history: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre."
Normally we don't lead with a quote quite that long, but that paragraph, read in the film by John Larroquette (who would go on to star in "Night Court" and several other television series), perfectly set...

That “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” street cred is still serving Tobe Hooper pretty well, though the director hasn’t really done a whole lot of note in a while. The only film of his I’ve seen since was 2004′s “Toolbox Murders”, which I liked, though it really wasn’t anything innovative. He’s also directed some episodes of the cable horror show “Masters of Horror”, but he’s been pretty quiet since. Hooper’s latest in over 6 years is the desert-set “Djinn”. I don’t recognize any of the faces in the cast, but setting a horror movie in one of those ridiculously opulent Middle Eastern hotels should go a long way. Check out the first extended trailer for Tobe Hooper’s “Djinn” below. An Emirati couple return home from a trip and discover that their new apartment has been built on a site that is home to some malevolent beings.

[1] Although he made his name in the late '70s and early '80s with horror classics like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Salem's Lot, and (at least officially) Poltergeist, director Tobe Hooper's been laying low as of late. His last credits, two episodes of the Showtime series Masters of Horror, and the 2005 film Mortuary, are from several years back, and the films he did before that (including Toolbox Murders and The Mangler) were neither as well known nor as highly respected as his early work. Happily for horror fans, he's back this year with a new film called Djinn, described as "unique new take on the haunted house thriller uncovers the dark truth behind classic fairytales of the Genie." And in even better news, the first trailer for the film actually looks pretty good, aside from the fact that some of the scenes could use subtitles for English speakers.

"So many pretty parts and no pretty wholes." That basically sums up the motivation behind the title character of Lucky McKee's 2002 breakout film, May. And there was no bigger reason that the film and director found success than the unforgettable star of the film, and the newest Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel honoree, Angela Bettis.
Although she had done sporadic film and television work before starring as the lead character in May (including an outstanding supporting role in Girl, Interrupted, the horror film Bless the Child with Kim Basinger and Jimmy Smits, and the little known thriller People are Dead with Jennifer Carpenter and Kristen Bell), this was the film (premiering at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival) that launched Bettis onto the mainstream horror scene. And since her trumpeted arrival, there has been no turning back for this brilliant actress and horror mainstay.
May was a stunning film in several ways.

What do Bambi, The Dark Knight and Seven all have in common? Some powerful moments of off-screen violence...
