Leap Year

Leap Before You Look

It's Leap Year, so a spinster tries various schemes to get herself a husband.

It's one of a series of animated cartoons done by Rube Goldberg during his "Boob McNutt" period of cartoons. Although he is best remembered for the elaborate inventions for performing simple tasks, his fame was great even before. In any case, this seems to have been one of his "Boob Weekly" releases for the Pathe exchange, animated at Raoul Barre's studio by George Stallings. Those far more expert than I say Goldberg may have done the layouts.

Mr. McNutt and his dog appear in a short preceding piece; the Sunday strips often had a five-panel cartoon preceding the enormous Sunday pages. Given that it's a mixed animation/live action piece, that McNutt stands next to an ink bottle, that he has a dog, and that he interacts with his creator, it looks like the Fleischers would steal this particular format for "Out of the Inkwell" three years later.
