Early Sunday Am Update: The 4-day fight between Warner Bros’ Furiosa and Alcon/Sony’s The Garfield Movie will drag out into Monday, both titles currently in a dead heat eyeing $31M over 4-days, $25M over 3 days.

There are those showing the 48-year old comic strip feline eating the one-armed desert renegade’s lunch with $31M to $30.96M, but it’s too close to call right now. In regards, to Garfield upsetting Furiosa, we told you this was in the cards.

Whether Garfield or Furiosa wins, it will be the lowest opening for a Memorial Day weekend No. 1 title in 29 years, the last being 1995’s Casper at $22M.

An orange cat with a hunger for lasagna and a hatred of Mondays made a big impression with his first primetime special, Here Comes Garfield, more than four decades ago.

The lovably sarcastic feline, who returns to the big screen May 24 in Sony’s The Garfield Movie, was created by cartoonist Jim Davis.

Garfield’s self-titled comic strip — featuring the cat giving guff to owner Jon Arbuckle and blissfully oblivious canine nemesis Odie — landed national syndication in 1978, followed by his first book, 1980’s Garfield at Large, topping the New York Times best-seller list.

While working on Here Comes Garfield, Davis struggled to make the cat stand up and dance, but got some assistance from his hero, Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz, who happened to be working in the same studio. “He started drawing over my drawing, saying, ‘The problem is, you’ve made Garfield’s feet too small,’ ” Davis once said in an interview.

Garfield — the lasagne-loving, Monday-hating, greedy, grumpy cat originating in Jim Davis’ long-running comic strip — is an awkward fit for a kids’ film. He’s a cynic forced to be a family-friendly goofball, a sarcastic hero being sold to an audience of under-tens with an undeveloped sense of sarcasm, a square pessimist peg in a round optimistic hole. It has been tried unsuccessfully before, in 2004’s Garfield: The Movie and its sequel — those films most notable for the fact that Bill Murray signed on to voice Garfield because he mistakenly (he claimed) thought one of the Coen brothers was behind it.

After all, the cartoon character, which started out as a comic strip more than 45 years ago, famously hated Mondays as much as he liked lasagna. Consider what we know about Garfield the cat: He’s orange, a little plump, he loves lasagna, he hates Mondays, and — ah, well, that’s about it. Chris Pratt’s plot to dominate the world of iconic characters continues in the wake of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” with the first trailer for “The Garfield Movie,” in which the “Guardians of the Galaxy” actor voices the titular gluttonous cat.

The trailer opens with something of a fake-out, as it sweetly chronicles the origin of Garfield and Andy’s relationship with the story of a lost little kitty cat who happens upon a lonely man at an Italian eatery. But soon after, shenanigans ensue, including those involving Garfield’s father Vic voiced by Samuel L. Jackson.

This is not the first time “Garfield” made the jump to the big screen. Bill Murray voiced the character in the 2004 film “Garfield: The Movie” and its sequel “A Tail of Two Kitties.”

Hannah Waddingham, who broke out as the tough-as-nails but complicated football club owner on Ted Lasso, has joined the high-flying cast of Ryan Gosling’s adventure feature, The Fall Guy.

The actress joins Emily Blunt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Stephanie Hsu and Winston Duke on the call sheet for the Universal movie, which is inspired by the 1980s television series. Bullet Train director David Leitch is helming the action extravaganza, which is now shooting in Australia.

In a switch from the original 1980s show that starred Lee Majors, the story doesn’t focus on a stuntman with a side hustle as a bounty hunter. Instead, the script by Drew Pearce focuses on a battered and past-his-prime stuntman (Gosling) who finds himself back on a movie with the star (Taylor-Johnson) for whom he doubled long ago and who replaced him. The wrinkle, however, is that the star has gone missing.

Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso) and Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) are the newest additions to the cast of the animated Garfield film in the works from Alcon Entertainment. The actors join an ensemble led by Chris Pratt which also includes Samuel L. Jackson, Nicholas Hoult, Hannah Waddingham, Cecily Strong and Ving Rhames, as previously announced.

The film being helmed by Mark Dindal is based on Jim Davis’ iconic same-name cartoon strip, which follows a cynical and lazy orange cat and his interactions with his owner, Jon Arbuckle, along with his fellow pet, Odie.

Emmy-winning Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein and Saturday Night Live breakout Bowen Yang are the latest to join the voice cast of the animated Garfield movie.

Chris Pratt will star as the lasagna-loving cat, with Samuel L. Jackson, Nicholas Hoult, Hannah Waddingham, Cecily Strong and Ving Rhames also lending their voices to the feature.

Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson’s Alcon Entertainment is behind the new Garfield, which has been picked up for worldwide — excluding China — by Sony Pictures, with a May 24, 2024, theatrical release set. Netflix series creator co-creator Jon Hurwitz has confirmed he is not involved in the making of Sony’s new Karate Kid movie.

“The guys and I would love to make Karate Kid and Cobra Kai movies and hope to someday. But this one isn’t from us or focused on the Cobra Kai cast. Don’t know much about it, but wish it well,” Hurwitz said on Twitter while participating in a fan Q&a on Twitter.

Neither Sony nor Hurwitz has elaborated on the new Karate Kid movie since the update. Still, it’s nice to have a confirmation from Hurwitz early in the project’s announcement. Clearing up this bit of business keeps Cobra Kai fans (like myself) from speculating about Sony’s plans for the new movie, at least as far as Cobra Kai is concerned. Sony Pictures has announced the “return of the original ‘Karate Kid’ franchise” to the big screen by dating a new ‘Karate Kid’ movie for June 7, 2024.

According to ‘Variety’, while the franchise has lived on thanks to Netflix’s ‘Cobra Kai’ series, which just debuted its fifth season on the streaming platform, this new ‘Karate Kid’ project will be the franchise’s first film offering since a 2010 reboot starring Jaden Smith.

The 2024 ‘Karate Kid’ movie does not yet have a synopsis from the studio or a cast and crew attached.

Other new titles added to Sony’s release calendar included an untitled horror movie from Screen Gems set for release on January 6, 2023, and ‘Missing’, the next installment in the ‘Searching’ franchise.

A new “Karate Kid” movie is in the works and has been dated for a release by Sony’s Columbia Pictures for June 7, 2024.

No new details were shared about the film currently in development other than that it is a return of the original “Karate Kid” franchise.

The original “Karate Kid” from 1984 starred Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita and spawned two sequels with Macchio, a fourth film in 1994 “The Next Karate Kid” with Morita and Hilary Swank, and a remake in 2010 with Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith. But the franchise has had a major resurgence thanks to the series “Cobra Kai” looking at the villainous dojo from the original film. Sony Television also produces “Cobra Kai,” and the show not only includes many of the same actors and characters reprising their original roles, but the latest fifth season ended on a cliffhanger that could point the way to a new feature.

Mediatoon Distribution has seen a slew of sales for a number of new and upcoming animated series, including a new adaptation of a beloved property.

The company unveiled three new titles at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous TV market in Biarritz this week, two of which have already found early buyers.

“Nicholas’ Fantastic Summer” follows the mischievous adventures of a boy and his friends as they get the most out of their summer beach holiday. Switzerland’s Rts, Mtva in Hungary and Poland’s TV Puls have already acquired the show, an adaptation of the bestselling books by late writer René Goscinny and cartoonist Jean-Jacques Sempé (who died Aug. 11). It was produced by Media Valley (“Zoom the White Dolphin”) for M6/Gulli, Warner Bros. Discovery’s Boing; and Belgian broadcasters Rtbf and Vrt.

The company has also pre-sold Season 2 of preschool show “The Fox Badger Family” to Tele Quebec in Canada and Rts in Switzerland.

Exclusive: Alcon Entertainment has joined Rtg Features and May 3rd Films for their upcoming docuseries on legendary basketball coach John Thompson.

Alcon is co-financing and co-producing alongside Rtg, the sister studio to global basketball media leader Slam, with Kirk Fraser (ESPN 30 for 30‘s Without Bias) directing and producing via his company, May 3rd. Also coming aboard the project as writer and creative producer is Jesse Washington, who collaborated with Thompson on his autobiography, I Came As a Shadow.

According to Deadline, Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, Hannah Waddingham and Cecily Strong will be starring in the upcoming flick alongside Chris Pratt and Samuel L. Jackson.

The animated feature adaptation is based on Jim Davis’ beloved cartoon strip of the same name.

Details about characters are being kept under wraps, but it was reported back in November that Pratt will play the lasagna-loving orange cat.

Sony and Alcon Entertainment’s “Garfield” animated feature has tapped Cecily Strong, Hannah Waddingham, Nicholas Hoult and Ving Rhames to join its cast.

As previously announced, Chris Pratt and Samuel L. Jackson will star in the adaptation of the beloved comic strip, scheduled to premiere globally on Feb. 16, 2024.

Mark Dindal is directing from a script by David Reynolds (“Finding Nemo”). Dneg Animation will animate and produce the film with Alcon Entertainment. Dneg CEO Namit Malhotra and Dneg president Tom Jacomb will both serve as producers.
