While many retrospective looks at cinematic years past find plenty dividing the current state of movies from all that came before, 2004, in many ways, still feels representative of our idea of the modern film industry. Superheroes, sequels, and superhero sequels dominated the box office, while the award shows favored an...

Our beloved orange tabby Persian cat Garfield is back on the big screen after a long while with Chris Pratt voicing the character in The Garfield Movie. However, things were far from good which eventually affected the project at the global box office as it garnered negative reviews from critics and audiences alike.

While there’s still time for the movie to head to its streaming debut, it was unable to bring the same success that Puss in Boots: The Last Wish gained after its release two years ago.
What Went Wrong With Chris Pratt’s The Garfield Movie?
Sony’s The Garfield Movie has met with an underwhelming response from audiences and critics alike, leading to it becoming a disappointing project from what it was initially intended. One of the reasons that led to that outcome is the lead voice actor himself.

An orange cat with a hunger for lasagna and a hatred of Mondays made a big impression with his first primetime special, Here Comes Garfield, more than four decades ago.
The lovably sarcastic feline, who returns to the big screen May 24 in Sony’s The Garfield Movie, was created by cartoonist Jim Davis.
Garfield’s self-titled comic strip — featuring the cat giving guff to owner Jon Arbuckle and blissfully oblivious canine nemesis Odie — landed national syndication in 1978, followed by his first book, 1980’s Garfield at Large, topping the New York Times best-seller list.
While working on Here Comes Garfield, Davis struggled to make the cat stand up and dance, but got some assistance from his hero, Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz, who happened to be working in the same studio. “He started drawing over my drawing, saying, ‘The problem is, you’ve made Garfield’s feet too small,’ ” Davis once said in an interview.

Garfield — the lasagne-loving, Monday-hating, greedy, grumpy cat originating in Jim Davis’ long-running comic strip — is an awkward fit for a kids’ film. He’s a cynic forced to be a family-friendly goofball, a sarcastic hero being sold to an audience of under-tens with an undeveloped sense of sarcasm, a square pessimist peg in a round optimistic hole. It has been tried unsuccessfully before, in 2004’s Garfield: The Movie and its sequel — those films most notable for the fact that Bill Murray signed on to voice Garfield because he mistakenly (he claimed) thought one of the Coen brothers was behind it.
This latest attempt details how Garfield first met his human ‘pet’, Jon (Nicholas Hoult), and became estranged from his father Vic (Samuel L. Jackson), before the stubborn housecat finds himself on a madcap heist adventure. Whether or not you think this is an origin story that needs to be told...

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival set the tone and atmosphere for a slew of awaited movies coming this Summer. Amidst that long line, Megalopolis, from Francis Ford Coppola, has become a major talking point in recent times, especially after its seven-and-a-half-minute-long standing ovation at the fest screening. On the other side of the slate, anticipation runs equally high for The Garfield Movie starring Chris Pratt as the voice of the famed orange cat.

The Garfield Movie. Photo By Dneg Animation. Copyright © 2023 Project G Productions, LLC Considering it’s a Monday, it seems appropriate to be talking about Garfield the Cat. After all, the cartoon character, which started out as a comic strip more than 45 years ago, famously hated Mondays as much as he liked lasagna. Now, Garfield is back on the big screen with his first fully animated movie adventure, The Garfield Movie. (2004’s Garfield: The Movie mixed live action with animation.) In the new movie, Garfield meets his street-smart estranged father, voiced by none other than Samuel L. Jackson, as cool a cat as there is in Hollywood. Jackson is excited about the movie and said the filmmakers put a lot of thought into how his character would have survived on the streets, along with how the dynamic between father and son would play out. Consider what we know about Garfield the cat: He’s orange, a little plump, he loves lasagna, he hates Mondays, and — ah, well, that’s about it. Enough information to fill about four comic strip panels, wouldn’t you say? And yet, somehow, this lazy kitty and his very mild exploits have inspired three television series (with one more on the way), a dozen prime-time specials, and three feature-length films.
While previous cinematic iterations of Garfield’s story have stretched his adventures to wacky ends — the 2004 “Garfield: The Movie” essentially acted as an origin story, while its 2006 sequel “Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties” put a “Prince and the Pauper”-ish twist on his life — the latest in a long, looooooong line of Garfield adaptations goes in the opposite direction. The summer movie season could use some help, and Chris Pratt might just be here to save the day. The "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Jurassic World" actor returns to the silver screen next weekend in "The Garfield Movie," an animated take on Jim Davis' orange, Monday-hating cat. For Sony Pictures, there is one big question; can some of that Pratt magic that made "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" ($1.36 billion worldwide) such a major hit last year rub off on this one? Even a fraction of that magic would be most welcome here.
"The Garfield Movie" is opening directly against George Miller's "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga." While the animated, family-friendly film would typically have the edge, it looks like "Furiosa" is going to win the weekend in the early going, with an opening between $46.5 and $59 million. But that doesn't mean this cat is out of luck, as Sony...

A lasagna-loving feline is returning to the big screen next year. Sony Pictures released The Garfield Movie trailer Monday, giving fans their first look at Chris Pratt’s version of the beloved orange feline. The trailer begins with a hungry, wide-eyed young Garfield stumbling across a man sitting by himself in a pizza parlor. When the man invites him in, they end up sharing a bite of pizza — and if you know Garfield, you know it didn’t end there. The one bite leads to a montage of Garfield devouring the rest of the pie,...

Chris Pratt’s plot to dominate the world of iconic characters continues in the wake of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” with the first trailer for “The Garfield Movie,” in which the “Guardians of the Galaxy” actor voices the titular gluttonous cat.
The trailer opens with something of a fake-out, as it sweetly chronicles the origin of Garfield and Andy’s relationship with the story of a lost little kitty cat who happens upon a lonely man at an Italian eatery. But soon after, shenanigans ensue, including those involving Garfield’s father Vic voiced by Samuel L. Jackson.
This is not the first time “Garfield” made the jump to the big screen. Bill Murray voiced the character in the 2004 film “Garfield: The Movie” and its sequel “A Tail of Two Kitties.”
The “Garfield” movie voice cast also includes Hannah Waddingham, Ving Rhames, Nichoulas Hoult, Cecily Strong, Harvey Guillén, Brett Goldstein and Bowen Yang.

Chris Pratt embodies the world’s most sarcastic yet endearing orange feline in the trailer for “The Garfield Movie,” premiering in theaters on May 24, 2024.
The new animated feature introduces new characters to comic creator Jim Davis’ universe, including Samuel L. Jackson as Vic, Garfield’s father. Chances are, you know someone like “Quiz Lady” Anne Yum. As played by Awkwafina, this socially awkward young woman works a boring Cpa job by day, doing her best to blend in with the gray walls of her cubicle. But every evening at the same hour, Anne tunes in to her favorite game show and becomes a star — even if her flatulent old pug, Mr. Linguini, is the only witness — as she answers every question quickly and correctly.

Following Disney’s delay of Marvel Studios’ Deadpool 3 due to the actors strike, Paramount has made changes to next year’s schedule and beyond.
Similar to Deadpool 3, Mission Impossible 8 ne Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two needs to restart production, and that is looking unlikely with each day that passes in the SAG-AFTRA strike. It's all too easy to miss your big chance in Hollywood, whether it's by ending up in a flop through no fault of your own or missing the wrong phone call. It's a career tragedy that can happen to anyone, and it creates agonizing memories for stars still at the top of their careers. Just ask Bill Murphy about the time he did pick up his phone and wound up with a gig in "Garfield." That involved a mix-up over last names but it goes to show that anything can happen. To anyone.
The good news? Not every movie madness mixup ends in disaster. One star's missed call might be another's golden hour. A tragedy behind the scenes can create an opportunity for a fresh and far better take on a character. Science fiction definitely isn't exempt from Hollywood chaos, and in the case of some of our favorite movies,...

Mine is a family that kept everything and thus, in going through literally every item in the house, I am being confronted with things I haven’t seen in over thirty years. And a picture has...

Every now and then, an actor is vocal about disliking a film they once starred in.
While the question “Do you have any career biggest regrets?” may be one of the more obvious ones a journalist can ask an actor. the answer can sometimes be extremely revealing.
Many Hollywood stars have spoken negatively about their past choices, and have even poked fun at the role during an appearance in another one of their films.
Others – for example: Charlize Theron – have admitted accepting a film purely based on the director’s filmography, only to then be let down by the final results of their collaboration.
Below, The Independent looks at 27 actors who have been vocal about disliking films they have starred in.

Returning to our pages for her fourth appearance is Director Hannah Jacobs who shares with us her BAFTA nominated animation Your Mountain is Waiting, a short film produced by production company Strange Beast about embracing your instincts and facing the uncertainties of life head on. Jacobs tells her story with a subtle, gorgeous fluidity as her protagonist Martha, who is wrestling with her sense of intuition, smoothly drifts from quiet and introspective moments into vast surreal dreamscapes. Her visual style has a hand-drawn and illustrative sensibility too which gives its cast of characters, which is mostly made up of a wonderful variety of animals, a comforting comic feel. Dn spoke with Jacobs, in the run up to the BAFTA awards ceremony, to discuss her journey into animation as a practice, the introspective nature of her narrative, and the importance of colour as tool to establish mood.

Hannah Waddingham, who broke out as the tough-as-nails but complicated football club owner on Ted Lasso, has joined the high-flying cast of Ryan Gosling’s adventure feature, The Fall Guy.
The actress joins Emily Blunt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Stephanie Hsu and Winston Duke on the call sheet for the Universal movie, which is inspired by the 1980s television series. Bullet Train director David Leitch is helming the action extravaganza, which is now shooting in Australia.
In a switch from the original 1980s show that starred Lee Majors, the story doesn’t focus on a stuntman with a side hustle as a bounty hunter. Instead, the script by Drew Pearce focuses on a battered and past-his-prime stuntman (Gosling) who finds himself back on a movie with the star (Taylor-Johnson) for whom he doubled long ago and who replaced him. The wrinkle, however, is that the star has gone missing.

“What are your biggest regrets?” This might be one of the more obvious questions a journalist can ask an actor, but the answer can often be hugely revealing.
Many actors have spoken negatively about their time spent as a superhero, playing a teenage heartthrob or starring in films they believed had been written by somebody else.
Others, including Charlize Theron, have said they took a job solely due to a director’s filmography – only to then be let down by the final results of their collaboration.
Most recently, Jennifer Lawrence revealed that she did not look so favourably upon 2016 science fiction film Passengers.
Below, The Independent looks at 27 actors who have admitted to disliking films they have starred in.

New Karate Kid movie: Cobra Kai co-creator Jon Hurwitz confirms he is not involved in Sony’s spinoff
Update:
Netflix series creator co-creator Jon Hurwitz has confirmed he is not involved in the making of Sony’s new Karate Kid movie.
“The guys and I would love to make Karate Kid and Cobra Kai movies and hope to someday. But this one isn’t from us or focused on the Cobra Kai cast. Don’t know much about it, but wish it well,” Hurwitz said on Twitter while participating in a fan Q&a on Twitter.
Neither Sony nor Hurwitz has elaborated on the new Karate Kid movie since the update. Still, it’s nice to have a confirmation from Hurwitz early in the project’s announcement. Clearing up this bit of business keeps Cobra Kai fans (like myself) from speculating about Sony’s plans for the new movie, at least as far as Cobra Kai is concerned. A new “Karate Kid” movie is in the works and has been dated for a release by Sony’s Columbia Pictures for June 7, 2024.
No new details were shared about the film currently in development other than that it is a return of the original “Karate Kid” franchise.
The original “Karate Kid” from 1984 starred Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita and spawned two sequels with Macchio, a fourth film in 1994 “The Next Karate Kid” with Morita and Hilary Swank, and a remake in 2010 with Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith. But the franchise has had a major resurgence thanks to the series “Cobra Kai” looking at the villainous dojo from the original film. Sony Television also produces “Cobra Kai,” and the show not only includes many of the same actors and characters reprising their original roles, but the latest fifth season ended on a cliffhanger that could point the way to a new feature.

“What are your biggest regrets?” This might be one of the more obvious questions a journalist can ask an actor, but the answer can often be hugely revealing.
Many actors have spoken negatively about their time spent as a superhero, playing a teenage heartthrob or starring in films they believed had been written by somebody else (see: Bill Murray).
Others, including Charlize Theron, have said they took a job solely due to a director’s filmography – only to then be let down by the final results of their collaboration.
Below, The Independent looks at 25 actors who have admitted to disliking films they have starred in.
George Clooney – Batman & Robin (1997)
Michael Keaton, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck – some of Hollywood’s best-known actors have played the Caped Crusader on screen. However, only one wore a suit with Batnipples – and that was George Clooney. “Let me just say that I’d actually...

Once upon a time, there existed these things called newspapers that showed up at your door in the morning. Inside were news stories about politics, sports, health, and movie listings. They also included comic strips, aka the funny pages. Though the newspaper has gone the way of the dodo, for the most part, some of these comic strip characters still live in our imagination. One of them is a big orange tabby cat named Garfield, who hates mornings and Mondays, loves lasagna, is terrified of spiders, and bullies his doggie housemate Odie.
Even if you've never read a single Garfield comic in a newspaper, you've likely seen him in books, animated series, or films. This grumpy orange feline, created in 1978 by cartoonist Jim Davis, is hitting the big screen again in a new animated film adaptation from Alcon Entertainment. Garfield will be voiced this time around by Chris Pratt ("Guardians of the Galaxy...

Mondays beware because Hannah Waddingham, Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, and Cecily Strong are joining the cast of Alcon Entertainment‘s Garfield movie. Chris Pratt and Samuel L. Jackson also star in the film, which Mark Dindal is directing.
It should come as no surprise that Alcon’s Garfield movie is based on Jim Davis’ celebrated comic strip focusing on an orange, lazy, lasagna-loving feline, his owner, Jon Arbuckle, and Jon’s pet dog Odie. When Garfield isn’t making life a living hell for Jon and his canine companion, he waxes rhapsodic about the world, his perpetual hunger, and hatred of Mondays. Plot details about Alcon’s Garfield movie are unknown at this time. However, we know Pratt is voicing the iconic cat while Jackson is playing Garfield’s father, Vic.
Reports do not indicate who Waddingham, Rhames, Hoult, and Strong will play. However, if I had to venture a guess,...

After more than 15 years, America’s most iconic cat is finally returning to the big screen.
In 2024, we’re looking forward to the release of “Garfield,” the long-awaited film starring Jim Davis’ iconic comic strip character. The movie will, incredibly, be the first fully-animated theatrical project starring the lasagna-eating grouch, who first appeared in newspaper comic sections in 1978. Although the franchise has remained enormously popular in the decades since its launch, Garfield’s only theatrical films were two live action/CGI projects starring Bill Murray as the character. After the second film, “A Tale of Two Kitties,” bowed in 2006, the franchise remained off the bigscreen for years, in favor of direct-to-dvd films and television shows.
News of Garfield’s animated return first broke in 2016, when Alcon Entertainment secured the exclusive rights to developing animated features based on the character. Although the project remained dormant for several years, 2021 saw an uptick in news about the film,...
