Opera has always been a big part of my life, whether singing or listening to it. Over the years, my appreciation of Handel's music has grown considerably, and Tamerlano is no exception. I think it is one of Handel's best operas, it does have a moving, compelling story and music that is not only beautiful but fits the story perfectly. And this is a great production with ornate production values, an intimate atmosphere and slightly static but warmly coloured and well-lit sets. The orchestra are stylish and always musical and energised, with Trevor Pinnock effectively leading the orchestra on a very authentic-sounding harpsichord. The singing is great with Monica Bacelli an expressive and moving Tamerlano, Thomas Randle an intense Bajazet, Graham Pushee outstanding as Andronico and Antonio Abete's Nel Mondo E Nell Abisso just part of his powerful performance as Leone. Elisabeth Norburg-Schulz is a little disappointing, technically and dramatically she's fine but her voice can sound rather sour at times. All in all, a great production. 9/10 Bethany Cox
