There has been a lot of news from DC Studios in the past several days. Some of it has been great, some of it has been less than great, and some of it is somewhere in the No Man’s Land of interpretation and opinion that lies between the two. Some of it is a bit concerning when it comes to how this universe is coming together. Ideally, this universe will mimic what happens in the comics with standalone stories, crossovers, and huge Crisis style events. More than two years after revealing their initial plans for the TV series that will help populate their new DC Universe, DC Studios CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran met with the press to offer some candid updates on what’s still moving forward, what has been slowed by a “bumpy road,” and what is brand-new to the mix.

It’s been just over two years since James Gunn and Peter Safran mapped out their initial slate of projects for DC Studios and what would be the newly revamped Dcu, a new interconnected universe of superhero movies and films based on DC characters and kicking off in earnest with Gunn’s “Superman” arriving this summer.

So where do they stand? In a press event last week on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, Gunn and Safran held court with journalists about all they had cooking, the stuff that’s moving forward and the stuff that has lost the wind in its sails or has hit a snag. That included everything from details on the studio’s Batman films — both the Dcu film “The Brave and the Bold” and updates on the non-canon “The Batman 2” from Matt Reeves — as well as a potential “Teen Titans” movie and the update...

At the end of January 2023, DC Studios gathered select members of the press and announced plans for a Dcu slate dubbed "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters." Many fans pointed out the similarities to Warner Bros.'s ill-fated 11-movie Dceu slate reveal in 2014 and, unfortunately, some of these Dcu projects aren't moving along as well as hoped.

Talking to press, co-ceo Peter Safran said of The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker spin-off Waller, "We’ve taken a couple of cracks at it but still haven’t been able land. Waller has been a bumpy road."

The Authority, meanwhile, is "not the furthest along" according to James Gunn and, subsequently, "hasn't been made much [of] a priority." Safran explained, "It is a very big movie, if you’re going to do it properly. Some of the story elements perhaps that are in Superman and some of the other films we fast-tracked, step a little on the Authority.

According to DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, the age of Gods and Monsters will soon be upon us. Like Marvel Studios’s “phases,” Gods and Monsters provides a roadmap for DC’s film and television initiative. Gunn and Safran shared an outline of their plan in January 2023, though, as we know, everything in Hollywood is subject to change, especially when the project is as vast as Gods and Monsters. According to the duo, they plan to release two live-action films and one animated film annually. In contrast, Max, the HBO-adjacent streaming service, wants two live-action and two animated series annually. However, 2025 is an exception, with Peacemaker Season 2 being the only live-action release this year.

“We’ve unified the brand, greenlit five theatrical films, made three live action-series and producing five animated series. We’ve also acquired and distributed a BAFTA and PGA winning documentary,” Safran said at a press conference on Friday.

“Whoa, déjà vu,” exclaimed DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran as he stepped inside a modest screening room on the Warner Bros. studio lot in Burbank. In January 2023, Safran and his co-chief James Gunn presented the inaugural slate for the newly relaunched DC Universe to a small group of journalists in this same room. Just over two years later, on Feb. 21, the duo returned to deliver their first official update about the slate to (roughly) the same group.

“It’s weird sitting here, because it does feel like no time has passed and yet so much has happened,” Gunn said.

“We look so much older,” Safran said. “That’s the biggest difference.”

“Yeah,” Gunn said. “You really do.”

In September, the trades revealed that DC Studios had tapped Captain America: Brave New World writer Matthew Orton to pen a Deathstroke/Bane team-up movie.

Many have wondered whether it's secretly a Secret Six project, though James Gunn has confirmed on multiple occasions that he has plans for DC's Terminator in the Dcu. What we don't know is who will play the fan-favourite villain, though Gunn likely has big plans for the character.

According to scooper @MyTimeToShineH, "[DC Studios] already have someone in mind to play Deathstroke in the Dcu so casting should be not too far [away]."

This is a positive update and one that suggests we'll soon see another major character added to the Dcu. How Gunn casts Slade Wilson will be very interesting, particularly as the character has frequently been portrayed as different ages on the page.

One of the interesting and relatively unknown characters set to make his big screen debut in James Gunn's Superman is "Mister Terrific." He first graced DC's pages in 1997's Spectre #54 (written by John Ostrander and illustrated by Tom Mandrake). On-screen, he will be played by Edi Gathegi and is supposed to be "the main character of those [other] characters [in the movie]."

Previously, he appeared live on the CW's Arrow (Echo Kellum) and had a few stints in animated projects, one was voiced by the Cosby-outing comedian Hannibal Burress. 

For Black History Month, it's important to celebrate Bipoc heroes and villains because the writers and artists didn't hold back when it came to creating diversity among the legion of characters. They have been given amazing powers--some cosmic, others mutant, and a few elite humans. Mister Terrific is the third smartest character in all DC lore, next to Lex Luthor and the Atom, Ray Palmer.

James Gunn has been slow on updates for his Batman project in the Dcu. This is understandable, given that the focus is currently on the first of the Dcu off the ground: Superman. However, DC has probably put a gem in place for James Gunn to take advantage of, which might just get Brave and the Bold off the ground.

Hawkeye writer Matt Fraction, who is also known for his work with Iron Man, Future Foundation, and Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen, will be heading part of the new creative team on Batman over at DC, along with artist Jorge Jiménez. James Gunn has a great opportunity here to have the writer come aboard the Dcu barge to get the franchise’s Batman film off the ground.

Tara Strong, the Canadian actress, is known for her voice roles in the industry and has voiced Raven in Teen Titans and Teen Titans Go!. Strong was at the center of controversy in October 2023, when she was fired from her show Boxtown for her controversial political statements.

Andy Muschietti recently confirmed two things: The Brave and the Bold is not coming until after 2027 at least, and Robert Pattinson, at least for now, is not going to be Batman in the Dcu. While it’s disappointing that the Dcu will lack a Batman movie for at least the first three years of its existence, it’s at least good to know there is some kind of plan.

However, it would just be strange to build an interconnected DC movie universe and completely exclude Batman, easily DC’s most popular character and, arguably, the most popular comic book character of all time. Maybe, instead of giving the Dcu Batman his own movie to compete with The Batman Part II, Batman’s Dcu role could be to appear in other character’s movies before he gets his own similar to Hulk or Fury in the MCU.

Matt Reeves has come out with a new update about his version of the Batman mythos, where Robert Pattinson essays the role of the Dark Knight, joining James Gunn’s Dcu. While there was a section of the fandom that was very taken by the idea that Robert Pattinson’s Batman was in the same universe as David Corenswet’s Superman, there are others that rightly believe that this would be a bad move for the character. 11 years later - and two years after the end of the Dceu - Henry Cavill is arguably more right than ever about the potential of the franchise's most wasted character. The Dceu timeline has some epic highs and lows, leading to the decision to reboot the DC movie empire into the DC Universe timeline following the final Dceu release of Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom. With the franchise's movies managing some over $1 billion box office successes, and some critical failures as well, it's as clear that there was real promise in the Dceu as it's clear that the path forward for it got increasingly complicated.

Much of this can be attributed to the changing plans for the Dceu, which appear to have altered quite drastically and frequently from Zack Snyder's initial framework for the franchise, which included a trilogy of Justice League movies that audiences only eventually saw one of.

Last month, we found out that Max, the streaming service for many DC shows and movies, was going to make some changes. Four popular DC animated series were set to leave by the start of 2025. On January 1, if you were planning on watching some of your favorite animated shows, you were most likely met by disappointment.

The shows removed include ‘Teen Titans,’ ‘Teen Titans Go!,’ ‘Static Shock,’ and ‘Green Lantern: The Animated Series.’ To make it clear, it’s not only DC Shows that got removed from the streaming service many notable classics like ‘Ed, Edd n’ Eddy,’ ‘The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy’, ‘The Looney Tunes Show’ were also removed.

James Gunn's Dcu is gradually establishing Batman's lore, with the announcement of Clayface and Dynamic Duo, and characters such as Clayface, Dr. Phosphorus, and Batman himself appearing for the first time in Creature Commandos. Of course, the Dcu's Batman won't make his full on-screen live-action Dcu debut until The Brave and the Bold's release. Until then, more Batman-adjacent characters are expected to be introduced in upcoming Dcu movies and shows, including Waller and Teen Titans.

As of Batman's animated cameo in Creature Commandos episode 6, the Dcu's Batman hasn't been cast yet. Neither have been key Gotham characters like Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Damian Wayne, or the Joker. However, some actors have already put their names forward for these roles.

Let’s remember that last month, we learned that Max, the streaming home of countless DC shows and movies, is facing some unexpected changes as four fan-favorite DC animated series were set to leave its library by the start of 2025.

Namely, Teen Titans, Teen Titans Go!, Static Shock, and Green Lantern: The Animated Series are no longer available after December 31. However, it seems that those were not the only projects removed from Max’s library starting January 1.

Among the notable titles now missing are the first seven seasons of Teen Titans Go!, the original Teen Titans, Ed, Edd n’ Eddy, The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, The Looney Tunes Show, Static Shock, and Green Lantern: The Animated Series.

Now, however, fresh developments suggest that DC is ready to make some elements from the Teen Titans!
