This week's Pilot TV Podcast sees our very own James Dyer leaving the podbooth and heading underground as he visits the set of Apple TV+'s newly confirmed Silo Seasons 3 and 4. On his travels, James sits down for a chinwag with both Rebecca Ferguson and the big Apple himself, Tim Cook [27:24 36:35 approx]. Never one to miss a chance to wax lyrical about Foundation, James cornered the Apple CEO to discuss the streamer’s penchant for brilliant nerdy sci-fi. Then, James heads out of the dystopian future and into the crime-ridden present as he speaks to The Ink Black Heart star Holliday Grainger about her return in the latest instalment of BBC's Strike saga [1:01:51 — 1:20:03 approx].
Elsewhere, in a genuine stroke of coincidence rather than nefarious corporate synergy/shilling, this week's listener question has the team — James, Kay Ribeiro, and Boyd Hilton — discussing which streaming service has had the best 2024. Over on the news front,...

Over the weekend, Prime Video revealed the first trailer for the third season of The Wheel of Time, its fantasy show based on the book series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. Over the course of its first two seasons, The Wheel of Time has consistently improved and delved deep into its source material to create a vivid fantasy world onscreen. But if this trailer is any indicator, we ain't seen nothing yet.
At the heart of The Wheel of Time is a young man named Rand al'Thor who discovers he's a prophesied figure named the Dragon Reborn who is destined to fight against the forces of the Dark One. The first two seasons were largely about Rand coming to grips with this weighty destiny as his friends and allies grappled with their own divergent paths. For more than a year, rumors have swirled that Shohreh Aghdashloo, the actor who played foul-mouthed politician Crisjen Avasarala for six seasons on The Expanse, was joining the cast of Prime Video's fantasy show The Wheel of Time in a major role. Now at last, we have confirmation from the source itself. The official Wheel of Time X account announced today that Aghdashloo will play Elaida do Avriny a'Roihan, an Aes Sedai of the Red Ajah who is one of the key figures at the White Tower in Robert Jordan's book series.
"The whispers are true. Shohreh Aghdashloo is officially an Aes Sedai," they wrote, captioning a picture which reads "Shohreh Aghdashloo is Elaida in The Wheel of Time" over a picture of the Iranian-American actor.

Based on the best-selling Robert Jordan fantasy book series, in which a humble farm boy, Rand al’Thor, learns he is The Dragon Reborn—a dangerous figure from history destined to save the world … or break it. The Wheel of Time turns, and the Last Battle approaches.
At the end of Season Two, after defeating Ishamael, Rand reunites with his friends at Falme and is declared the Dragon Reborn. But in Season Three, the threats against the Light are multiplying: the White Tower stands divided, the Black Ajah run free, old enemies return to the Two Rivers, and the remaining Forsaken are in hot pursuit of the Dragon… including Lanfear, whose relationship with Rand will mark a crucial choice between Light and Dark for them both. It's a massive week for fantasy book fans, and it just got even better. Right now, author Brandon Sanderson and his company Dragonsteel are in the middle of running their yearly convention, Dragonsteel Nexus. Taking place in Salt Lake City, Utah from December 5 to December 7, Dragonsteel Nexus is a fan convention which celebrates Sanderson's works, as well as the works of other creators in the fantasy and science fiction space. Every year it gets a bit bigger, and since this weekend Sanderson is also launching Wind and Truth, the fifth book in his fantasy epic The Stormlight Archive and one of the most important books of his career to date, it's extra special.
It's fitting then that this year's Dragonsteel is coming with some pretty big announcements, and not all of them about Sanderson's fictional universe, the Cosmere. During the opening night of Dragonsteel Nexus, Sanderson announced that his publishing...

Exclusive: Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios are staging a do-over on God of War, the series for Prime Video that’s based on PlayStation‘s hugely popular ancient mythology-themed video game.
Deadline has learned that showrunner/executive producer Rafe Judkins, along with EPs Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, have left the project after completing multiple scripts for the first season. The studios are apparently looking to move in a different creative direction, though one source told Deadline the trio’s scripts were praised by both Sony and Prime.

Basing a show’s success on viewer satisfaction is a tricky proposition.
TV history is rife with bizarre and nonsensical occasions that make sense only within the numbers — sometimes, not even then.
Firefly is a legendary example of this. It had a loyal fanbase and critical acclaim, but Fox nonetheless cut its legs out from under it.
(Helen Sloan/HBO)
There are countless instances of relatively popular programs ending on massive cliffhangers, never to return.
Then there are the shows that audiences hate, yet a new season is in the works each and every year.
There’s a great deal of head-scratching here, so the ultimate answer is yes.
A show can succeed if viewers aren’t satisfied, and for several reasons that make more sense in context. The virulent nature of news, audience vs critical reactions, and, of course, money play their roles.

Artur Hawkwing is a legendary figure within The Wheel of Time series, written by Robert Jordan and finished by Brandon Sanderson. Born Artur Paendrag Tanreall, he was a very powerful Ta'veren — basically someone who's so important to the fabric of reality that events bend around them — and eventually ruled over a vast empire. He was a well-loved king whose reign was marked by peace, although his death did set off a brutal period of warfare as people fought to take his place, or else carve off pieces of his former empire for themselves.
Artur Hawkwing gets talked about a lot in The Wheel of Time books, but is rarely seen. That makes sense, considering he died long before the events of the story. But he does return briefly when Mat Cauthon sounds the Horn of Valere in The Great Hunt, coming to Mat's aid alongside other heroes of legend.

The Czech Republic’s Audiovisual Producers´ Association (APA) has called for the country’s audiovisual incentive to be increased to 25%, arguing its current 20% offer is not competitive enough for attracting enough international roductions.
The country’s audiovisual industry had a turnover of £450m in 2023, according to APA figures, down 12% on the record year of 2022. The APA said the main reason for the drop is a decline in international production whose revenues fell 18% to £310m

Co-founded in 2017 by long-time friends and animation enthusiasts Adeoyin Okuboyejo and Ayobami Bello, Taeps Animation Studios aims to usher in a new era of animation that celebrates African culture and heritage. The company is best known for the short film “Ewa,” which was nominated for Best Animation Short Film at the African Film Festival (Afriff) in 2023.

When adapting “The Wheel of Time” for Amazon Prime Video, “everything begins and ends with character” for Sony’s head of creative Lauren Stein. “I think with any of these adaptations, whether it’s a game, whether it’s from a series of books, people come to these worlds for character, not for spectacle,” she added. “And the spectacle is really nice to have, but if you’re not connected to someone in the show, you’re not going to stay with it.”
As part of Variety‘s Sony FYC Showcase, Stein was joined by “Outlander” executive producer Maril Davis, “Twisted Metal” showrunner and executive producer Michael Jonathan Smith, “Twisted Metal” production designer Vicotria Paul, “The Wheel of Time” executive producer Justine Gillmer and “The Wheel of Time” actor Daniel Henney to discuss adapting existing IP into a successful television series. Variety senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay served as moderator for the conversation.

Exclusive: Platige Image (The Witcher) and Mount Devil, together with The Wheel of Time’s executive producer Mike Weber, are in the works on a TV series based on Otherland, the 4-book series by Tad Williams.
Otherland (the books and its TV adaptation) is described as “an epic cyberpunk-fantasy adventure.” The summary reads, “The world as we know it has an additional layer here – hyper-realistic VR arenas that have become a new place for fun, work, education but also debauchery, crime and abuse. A raucous comedy from playwright Camilla Whitehill, “Big Mood” teams “Bridgerton” and “Derry Girls” alum Nicola Coughlan with ‘It’s a Sin’ star Lydia West to dive headlong into mental illness and friendship. Fremantle, heading global distribution, will showcase the project in Cannes as part of its Mipcom slate. The market kicks off Oct.16.
A divinely sardonic and captivating laugh riot, the upcoming Channel 4 series presents an earnest portrait of mania and biologically-induced despair in a world where mental health has been commodified and sanitized for ease of consumption. Whitehill manages a highly nuanced depiction of Coughlan’s Maggie, whose bipolar pendulum swings erratically, as she tries desperately to regain control of her fleeting agency while clinging tightly to longtime friend Eddie, played by West.
“We’ve done a lot of patting ourselves on the back as a society, saying, ‘We’re really facing mental health,’ but we’re not.
