Last year, Toho released a new Godzilla film, titled Godzilla Minus One (read our review Here), in Japan on November 3rd, which happens to be Godzilla Day, the anniversary of the 1954 release of the original Godzilla movie. That was the 69th anniversary – and since this year marks the 70th anniversary of the original film, Godzilla Minus One is returning to theatres this weekend, with screenings starting on November 1st. There’s also a black & white version of Godzilla Minus One that’s called Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color, and that version of the film is also returning to theatres for this celebration. A drag show takes a village, especially those featured in HBO’s docuseries “We’re Here.” Hair, makeup, song selection, choreography, lighting, props, Red Bull — there’s no shortage of things needed to help give life to the art form.
But it all starts with a connection between two people. In the Emmy-winning series, well-known drag queens work with marginalized people in U.S. towns that don’t often embrace inclusivity. The queens help participants build a drag persona. Then, as a final send-off, the participants perform for their community, celebrating what often isolates them.
“It always comes down to the drag mom and the drag kid putting their heads together and figuring out what feels right and how to pull it off with the tools we have,” says Season 4 co-host Sasha Velour. “Every single number that we did on the show was a totally new process. It was like reinventing the wheel every time,...

Hozier is feeling particularly nocturnal on “Too Sweet,” one of four new releases that appear on his new EP Unheard. The musician first teased the song on TikTok with a quick sketch of a coffee-drinking, chain-smoking skeleton pumping it through its headphones.
“I take my whiskey neat, my coffee black, and my bed at three,” he sings, falling into the rhythm of a true night owl. The “Too Sweet” snippet has been used in more than 38,500 posts on the viral video app this month.

Paramore singer Hayley Williams has called out the transparent display of racism shown by the Tennessee House of Representatives in blocking a resolution honoring fellow Grammy winner Allison Russell while allowing a similar resolution honoring her band to proceed.
In a statement to The Tennessean, Williams blasted the “blatant racism of our state leadership” while commenting on Republican Caucus Chair Jeremy Faison’s objection.
“For those that don’t know, Allison Russell is an incredibly talented musician and songwriter. Her music spans genres with strong ties to the Folk/Americana scene,” Williams said. “You might have seen her on the Grammy stage performing with the great Joni Mitchell. Oh, she is also Black. She’s a brilliant Black woman.”
Williams continued, “The blatant racism of our state leadership is embarrassing and cruel. Myself, as well as Paramore, will continue to encourage young people to show up to vote with equality in mind.

Tennessee Rep. Justin Jones (D-Nashville) sought to honor a pair of Nashville-based musical acts for their Grammy wins on Monday (February 12th) with ceremonial resolutions, but only Black singer-songwriter Allison Russell received an objection from a House Republican.
Jones brought forward two resolutions to honor Russell (Best American Roots Performance) and the band Paramore (Best Rock Album and Best Alternative Music Performance). In a procedural move, House Republican Caucus Chair Jeremy Faison (R-Cosby) objected to the Russell resolution.
According to The Tennessean, Faison’s objection meant that the resolution was sent back to committee, “where objected consent items often die.” According to House rules, no debate was required for the move, meaning that Faison was not forced to express his opposition to honoring the folk musician.
While the newspaper pointed out Russell has been a vocal critic of Tennessee Republicans for their anti-lgbtq+ community legislation, so has Paramore vocalist Hayley Williams.

In his typical fashion, Obama shared separate posts for each medium, starting with listing his picks for the year’s best books, including The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store (James McBride), The Maniac (Benjamin Labatut), Poverty, by America (Matthew Desmond), How to Say Babylon (Safiya Sinclair), The Wager (David Grann), Chip War (Chris Miller) and The Vaster Wilds (Lauren Groff).
His other top picks were Humanly Possible (Sarah Bakewell), King: A Life (Jonathan Eig), The Covenant of Water (Abraham Verghese), The Best Minds (Jonathan Rosen), All the Sinners Bleed (S.A. Cosby), The Kingdom, the Power,...

As he’s always wont to do, Barack Obama has been trickling out his favorite bits of culture from 2023 over the past few weeks, and he’s finally shared his list of favorite songs.

Takashi Yamazaki’s first feature, “Juvenile,” while nothing groundbreaking, was a charming directorial debut that teased the potential of the director’s talents moving forward. Sadly, the same cannot be said for his second movie, “Returner,” a visually ugly mess that fails to entertain with its action or engage with its sci-fi storytelling. Much of the production team returns, including visual effects companies Shirogumi and Robot Communications, as do some actors, notably Anne Suzuki, in a more prominent starring role. Starring alongside her is Takeshi Kaneshiro, who cinephiles may best recognize for his collaborations with acclaimed filmmaker Wong Kar-wai. While “Returner” would be a box-office hit, it was met with generally negative reception.

Space Battleship Yamato is the live action film adaptation of the original Space Battleship Yamato (aka Star Blazers in the West) anime TV series.
You may have previously seen the trailer for the live-action Yamato adaptation here on Blogomatic3000, well now we have your first look at the films official (and rather apocalyptic) Japanese one-sheet poster:

Previously only seen in glimpses as a teaser trailer, here’s your first full look at the big-budget live-action “Space Battleship Yamato” movie via YouTube. Based on the popular anime, the live-action movie is directed by Takashi Yamazaki (“Returner”), and stars Koyuki (last seen in “Blood: The Last Vampire”), Aya Ueto (star of the “Azumi” movies), and Takuya Kimura (“I Come with the Rain”). It was apparently shown during a Japanese TV show, hence the Pip with the people, uh, watching the trailer along with us. To save the human race once again facing the danger of extinction, the restored Yamato voyages in to outer space. The year is 2220. A black hole with a size 300 times larger than the sun approaches the Solar System and the earth is expected to fall in to massive black hole. A transmigration to the Sairam Star begins and the first convoy led by Kodai Yuki departs the earth.

I was way back in January when we first brought the news (and first trailer) for the live action adaptation of Space Battleship Yamato, and now we have a new trailer – one that reveals a Lot more of the films special effects and CGI wizardy:

Japanese director Takashi Yamazaki (Returner, the Always films) has been working for a while on Space Battleship Yamato, aka the live-action remake of the anime that was released as Star Blazers in the Us. We saw a teaser trailer in January that suggested a great deal about how the film would look, even as it declined to reveal too much about the film's effects. Now there's a full trailer that really opens the floodgates and shows just how huge the scope of this adaptation might be. This footage looks fantastic, and is certainly way beyond what I expected to see out of the movie. Twitch presents the trailer and some of the info on the film. And no matter what you think of some of the acting and delivery, there are some killer visuals in store. The teaser suggested that might be the case, but there's a much more impressive...

Dig on some seriously epic Asian space opera right now with the release of the full trailer for anime adaptation Space Battleship Yamato. Directed by the dude who did the awesome The Returner a few years back, Takashi Yamazaki, I think it looks awesome. Some of the space battle shots look particularly awesome, like a blend of model work and CGI.
Synopsis:
Set in 2220, the pic will depict the evacuation of 300 million people from Earth to avoid certain death from an expanding black hole. The Yamato, a space battleship, is leading the rescue fleet when it is attacked by an alien force.
Trailer after the break.

Look out, someone gave Japanese special effects genius Takashi Yamazaki a big bag of money and the rights to one of the nation's most famous space operas.
Yamazaki first drew serious attention with The Returner, his scifi-action fusion starring Takeshi Kaneshiro, in which he showed that even when under significant budgetary restraints he could pull off some impressive effects and action work. The Returner showed promise but it wasn't until Yamazaki changed gears completely with the uber-nostalgic Always films that he would break through as one of Japan's top directors, period, both in terms of box office and critical success. And though it's hard to think of the Always pictures as effects extravaganzas, seeing as they are basically period set dramas, the invisibility of the effects work is testament to Yamazaki's skill, as pretty much every shot has been altered in some way to create the authentic period feel of post-war Tokyo.

You had to know that Takashi Yamazaki would return to science fiction one day. And that when he did he would do so in a big way. A to-the-bone effects geek, Yamazaki rose through the ranks directing television while also pursuing parallel careers in animation and special effects before rising to international attention directing the Takeshi Kaneshiro starring sci-fi action picture Returner. Promising as Returner was, however, it was also quite flawed and it wasn't until Yamazaki turned from the future to the past that he found widespread success, striking massive commercial and critical success with his shamelessly nostalgic Always pictures. But now he's back where he belongs.
Space Battleship Yamato is one of Japan's most famous and longest running anime series, the classic story of humanity's best and brightest packed into a massively powerful spaceship on a last desperate mission to claim a device that can cleanse and heal the shattered earth.

Star Blazers was one of my favorite television shows growing up as a kid. I watched it religiously, every day, until the show's 3 season completion. It was also one of the first cartoons where you had to watch it in order, or you might get lost. I think I've seen the series in it's entirety, a total of 3 times. I Loved how cool the space battleship Yamato was and the firing of the wave motion gun was amazing to see as it obliterated everything in its path. There have been Japanese live-action movies based off of Space Battleship Yamato before, and Disney has tried to get a live action version off the ground for Star Blazers, but so far that hasn't happened. Thank God for the Japanese and their love of all things robots, space and geek because a teaser trailer for their brand new Space Battleship Yamato movie hit YouTube and it looks awesome.
