"The Aviator" is based on the life of the eccentric and extremely wealthy Howard Hughes (played by Leonardo DiCaprio), whose roles as an aviator and film maker are spotlighted.
He never intended to land because there was nowhere safe for landing. He wanted to climb and therefore left the power on. That and it's been thought that the rear prop on the right engine went into reverse pitch, which didn't just mess up the power, it actually completely changed the plane's handling characteristics and negated all of the thrust from that engine.
