Oscar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio has made it his business to work with the most acclaimed filmmakers of the modern era. The star, whose first real breakout role came on the ABC sitcom “Growing Pains,” has worked with Martin Scorsese no less than six times with the latest being “Killers of the Flower Moon.”. He’s done double-duty with Quentin Tarantino, and made blockbuster films with Best Director winners James Cameron, Clint Eastwood, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, and Steven Spielberg, and nominees Ridley Scott and Adam McKay.
Beginning with 1993’s “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” for which he received his first Academy Award nomination at age 19, DiCaprio has earned eight total nominations from the Oscars: seven as an actor — including most recently for “Once Upon a Time In Hollywood,” plus his Best Actor win for “The Revenant” — and one as a producer, for Best Picture nominee “The Wolf of Wall Street.” DiCaprio has...

Leonardo DiCaprio at a film premiere, explaining why he chooses not to do sequels (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Here’s the real reason Leonardo DiCaprio has never starred in a sequel: he’s too good for them. That might sound bold, but let’s be honest—when you’re Leo, your film career is a gallery of stand-alone masterpieces, not a never-ending franchise treadmill. From Titanic to Inception, he’s carefully chosen films that tell unique, self-contained stories—and he’s stuck with that philosophy like a movie buff who refuses to watch the extended director’s cut.
Let’s start with the cold, hard truth: sequels don’t fit DiCaprio’s career plan. In a recent Variety interview, Leo explained, “Every movie I’ve done has been its piece of individual art.” Translation: he’s not into cashing in on sequels to keep a franchise alive. It’s all about that one-time magic.

Producer Michael Jackman has done it all.
He has 35 years of experience in all aspects of motion pictures. Most recently he’s produced “Conclave,” a papal thriller starring Ralph Fiennes that looks to be a big awards contender this season. But before that, he was EVP of physical production and post at FilmNation Entertainment. While there, he worked on movies like “Arrival,” “Greyhound” and “The Good Nurse.”
He started as a Pa and over the years oversaw the construction and operations of a state-of-the-art, 45,000-square-foot post-production facility for Ronald O. Perelman’s Deluxe Entertainment in the heart of New York City; served as senior vice president of post-production at the Weinstein Company and Dimension Films, working on post-production for over 40 films; and supervised several Oscar-nominated films including “Gangs of New York” and “The Aviator,” and was associate producer on Michel Gondry’s “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.”

This was definitely a huge feat given that she faced 42 casting rejections before the British fashion designer got her on board. Soon she started walking for major designers and became one of the highest-paid models in no time.

On a recent September afternoon, Jude Law is running away from the set of “Black Rabbit,” a Netflix miniseries where he plays a Manhattan nightclub owner who welcomes his troublemaker brother back into his life. Today’s setup, shot in the South Street Seaport, involves a flashback sequence between Law’s character and his scraggly sibling, played by Jason Bateman. Law and I are supposed to meet in the lobby of a hotel after the scene wraps, but filming goes over, and his assistant, Ryan, texts me that Law wants to talk to me as he walks to his trailer a few blocks away. But by the time I make it outside, he’s already a distant figure on the horizon.

While Gwen Stefani has long been on television screens as a judge on The Voice, she also had ambitions of making it in film as an actor. While she has not had many roles, she auditioned for parts with several high profile directors. She auditioned for a role in the Brian de Palma film Black Dahlia and admitted the experience was a bit humiliating.

In the early 2000s, Stefani began to shift her focus to film acting. She auditioned for a part in Black Dahlia alongside Josh Hartnett, who had a role as a detective.

If there’s one thing Angelina Jolie is known for, it’s her fierce determination. With a bold personality, she’s always made it clear she knows what she wants, and that didn’t change when she crossed paths with Harvey Weinstein.

When she was still pretty young, she had an encounter with the former Miramax executive, and she didn’t hold back in describing just how awful the experience was. The actress even had a fight with her ex-husband Brad Pitt when she saw him working on projects that had Weinstein’s name attached. To this day, she’s still very outspoken about her feelings toward the convicted s*x offender.

The legacy of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt can almost be considered predestined in Hollywood – so powerful is their impact on the industry today. However, the problem with legends is that there can only be one of them at a time. And the world will never settle for knocking either Pitt or Cruise off the pedestal to raise the other.

The newer generation with actors like Jacob Elordi, Timothée Chalamet, and Austin Butler have a long way to go before elevating themselves to the level of Cruise and Pitt. Fortunately, once in a blue moon, actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon waltz into the scene and launch themselves off with a bang which automatically propels them to god-tier fame among the fans.

Biography is undoubtedly one of the most popular genres in existence, because people just love to watch a Wikipedia page come to life in live-action format. But as someone who has flunked his history exams quite a few times, I don’t like a by-the-numbers chronicling of the past. I love biographies that tend to have pizazz, if they have the audacity to be experimental with their storytelling, or if they are centered around a not-so-popular subject matter. Off the top of my head, I can name Schindler’s List, Ford v Ferrari, Elvis (the 2022 one), Rocketman, Jarhead, The Aviator, First Man, Spotlight, Serpico, Spencer, American Animals, Dog Day Afternoon, Tetris, Judas and the Black Messiah, Dolemite Is My Name, and Chopper as some of my favorite biopics. Now, it seemed like The Man Who Loved UFOs was tailor-made for me. It had a peculiar subject matter. The filmmaking looked good.

As is the case with most below-the-line Oscar categories, bigger equals better when it comes to Best Production Design. The more lavish the sets, the more accurate the period detail, the more extravagant the designs, the more likely your film will win an Academy Award. Formerly known as Best Art Direction/Set Decoration, this prize goes to the production designer and set decorator, leaving the poor art directors on the outside looking in; perhaps that accounts for the title change. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Production Design.)
Like Best Costume Design, this award rarely corresponds with Best Picture. Before “The Shape of Water” prevailed in both categories in 2018, the last to line-up was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004. Often, the winner of this race hasn’t even been nominated for the top prize, as was the case with “Memoirs of a Geisha...

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2024 winner “Poor Things.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Costume Design.)
Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 Best Picture champs also won this award; the last to do so was “The Artist” in 2012.
Among the other double dippers was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004). Fantasy films such as this often boast Oscar-winning costumes, including 2022 champ “Cruella,...

“I’ve been thinking for a long time, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to have an exhibition?’” says costume designer Sandy Powell, whose numerous credits include Shakespeare In Love, most of Martin Scorsese’s recent output and the upcoming Snow White. But, for the three-time Oscar and BAFTA winner — and double Costume Designers Guild Award recipient — a career retrospective isn’t necessarily about flexing. She just wants to share.

Martin Scorsese’s Hollywood domination began in the mid-20th century and never came to a stop. A key member of the New Hollywood movement, along with Coppola, Spielberg, and Kubrick, Martin Scorsese – with the help of childhood friend Robert De Niro and the colorfully vocal Joe Pesci – defined a whole new genre that thrived on mean streets, crime, and violence.

When it was announced that two high-profile Martin Scorsese films – one a biopic of Frank Sinatra, the other on Jesus – were being postponed, it led people to wonder what exactly was going on, with some thoughts leading the mind to consider: Is Martin Scorsese retiring? Well, Marty is here to tell you that he doesn’t plan on going anywhere.
Appearing at the Museum of Cinema in Turin, Martin Scorsese told the crowd, “I’m not saying goodbye to cinema at all. I still have more films to make, and I hope God gives me the strength to make them.” Ok, so that whole “gives me the strength” statement does feel a bit uneasy, but considering the level of passion and drive that Scorsese still has – the guy released a three-and-a-half hour epic just last year, the same he turned 81 – we really don’t have any reason to worry.

The Australian star, known for her roles in films such as The Aviator, The Lord of the Rings trilogy and more recently, the Oscar-nominated Tár, was recognized on the Spanish coast for her achievements in film.

She might be the greatest dramatic actress of her generation, but Cate Blanchett hasn’t scared away every comedic director. After all, “Rumours” helmers Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson sent her the script for their audacious satire.
“I think in a strange way, everything is funny,” Blanchett said during an interview at the Variety Toronto Film Festival Studio. “We are all absurd in some way, and we all think we’re the heroes and the tragedians of our own stories. Yeah. Sometimes you make decisions about what you can be involved in based on a lot of things that don’t have to necessarily do with choice. Sometimes it’s to do with whether it fits in with your kids’ holidays.”
“That’s how we got you?” Evan Johnson asked.
“Yes, I wanted to be in the forest at night for eight weeks in Budapest, and my kids were really happy about that!

The Aviator actor revealed that until the age of 13, he thought Hollywood worked as a fraternity like the Freemasons and that he couldn’t possibly enter the field. He believed that he could only become an actor if he shared some sort of bloodline with the actors working in Hollywood.

The 51st edition of the Telluride Film Festival concluded on Labor Day, with three standout films generating significant Oscar buzz: Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner “Anora,” Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical “Emilia Pérez,” and Jason Reitman’s dark comedy “Saturday Night.”
Distributed by Sony Pictures, “Saturday Night” marks Reitman’s return to both directing and screenwriting, collaborating with co-writer Gil Kenan. While the film takes a high-tension look at the 90 minutes leading up to the first episode of the iconic sketch show “Saturday Night Live,” it has received mixed reactions from critics. However, history has shown that critical reception does not always align with Oscar success, as evidenced by past Best Picture winners like “Green Book” (2018) and “Coda” (2021). The No. 1 rule of Oscar punditry is to remember critics are not Oscar voters.
On the other hand, RaMell Ross’s “Nickel Boys” could be poised to make an impression with both the L.

Universal’s movie adaptation of the hit musical “Wicked” is flying into theatres this year and brings with it a flurry of stars including Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jeff Goldblum, and Michelle Yeoh. But those stars aren’t the only ones who may shine bright in the film as the movie’s trailer displayed a dazzling array of designs that could mean it’s set for Oscar attention. In particular, it could be a key player for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
Paul Tazewell is on costuming duty here. He was nominated for Best Costume Design in 2022 for another musical, “West Side Story.” Although he lost to Jenny Beavan for “Cruella,” musicals are often nominated in this category. One of the most acclaimed films of 2004 is “Collateral,” starring Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx and Jada Pinkett Smith. Written by Stuart Beattie and directed by Michael Mann, the movie tells of a cab driver in nighttime Los Angeles who becomes the hostage of a contract killer. Released 20 years ago in August 2004, “Collateral” was a box office success, grossing $220 million worldwide on a $65 million budget. Read on for more about the “Collateral” 20th anniversary.
Most of the nation’s critics were positive on “Collateral.” Todd McCarthy in Variety wrote, “This intensely focused piece soars not only on the director’s precision-tooled style but also on the outstanding interplay between leads Cruise and Foxx.” Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times called the film “a rare thriller that’s as much character study as sound and fury.” And Peter Travers in Rolling Stone said, “Mann hits a new peak, orchestrating action, atmosphere and...

When director Todd Field sat down and wrote his film “Tár,” there was only one option to play the title character. As he described to IndieWire in an interview, the film wouldn’t have been made if Cate Blanchett hadn’t agreed to take the part of lauded conductor Lydia Tár. “I had no backup plan,” he told IndieWire. “I’d met Cate 10 years ago and I knew coming out of that meeting that I had just been in conversation with somebody that had one of the great brains I ever met. And it was someone that I was really, really desperate to be able to collaborate with.”
It might seem silly to hinge your entire film on the participation of a single actor; the Australian Blanchett doesn’t share any notable biographical details with the fictional American conductor that makes her casting meaningful in a meta sense. Once you see her extraordinary performance,...

In the early 2000s, director Michael Mann was coming off four hugely ambitious films — “The Last of the Mohicans,” “Heat,” “The Insider,” and “Ali” — and thinking about what to do next. He spent over a year working with John Logan on a Howard Hughes script that Martin Scorsese would ultimately direct as “The Aviator,” but its similarities to “Ali” made him wary of embarking on another epic.
“It was an internal conflict,” Mann said on IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “In Ali’s case, it was about Ali determining his identity. ‘Who shall I be? Who shall I represent to the world?’ The quest he’s on is very similar to the Howard Hughes story.”
Luckily, another script came Mann’s way that was not only different from “Ali” but also from anything he’d done before. Stuart Beattie’s “Collateral” had the kind of intense conflict, rich characters, and...

When TCM channel host Dave Karger used to be a writer for Entertainment Weekly in his early days as a print journalist, he would focus a great deal on interviewing the big pop stars of the day, along with his duties on the film beat. But little did very many people suspect then that what he really wanted to be writing about was “Laura”… not Branigan, but David Raksin’s music for the classic 1945 noir. That was the film that really prompted Karger’s lifelong love of movie scoring.
“His score for ‘Laura’ really turned me on to classic film music, and film scores in general,” says Karger. “And then you go back and you learn that in 1945, there were 20 Oscar nominees that year in the category of best score for a non-musical film — and David Raksin wasn’t even one of the 20 nominees. "Million Dollar Baby" was Clint Eastwood's second Best Picture winner — and, I've a feeling, narrowly missed out on being his third, because there was a tremendous amount of enthusiasm for "Mystic River" in 2003. Unfortunately for Eastwood, that happened to be the year voters had earmarked as the year to celebrate Peter Jackson's brilliantly executed Middle-earth saga with the release of its concluding chapter "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King." Still, I bet it was a closer vote.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of "Million Dollar Baby" taking Best Picture is that, looking over the near-century-long list of winners, it's likely in the top five of awardees you never want to watch again — not because it's bad, but because it's horrifically depressing. Eastwood successfully sets the film on a familiar sports movie trajectory, but then it veers shockingly off course into a despairing third act.

Portman made her acting debut when she was just 13-years-old with “Leon: The Professional” (1994), which cast her as a teenager teaming up with a hitman (Jean Reno) to avenge her family’s murder.
Her first Oscar nomination came just 10 years later: Best Supporting Actress for “Closer” (2004). The role of Alice, a stripper dating a writer (Jude Law) in love with another woman (Julia Roberts), brought her a Golden Globe victory, though the Academy went with Cate Blanchett (“The Aviator”) instead.
Portman didn’t go Oscar-less for too long. Just six years later, she reaped a Best Actress victory for playing an obsessive ballerina in the psychological thriller “Black Swan...

A playwright-turned-screenwriter, John Logan made a name for himself — and earned three Oscar nominations — working with some of the biggest names in the business, in genres ranging period dramas, sword-and-sandal epics and spy thrillers.
His credits include Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator, Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd, Oliver Stone’s Any Given Sunday, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, Ed Zwick and Tom Cruise’s The Last Samurai, and two James Bond movies directed by Sam Mendes, to name a few.
Logan was, in his own words, shaped by two early influences: William Shakespeare and monsters. The Great Bard led him to drama, theatre, and a career in writing. But even before that, there were monsters. He was raised on the fantastical world of Dark Shadows, the horror movies of Universal and Hammer, Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine, the Aurora monster modeling kits, and Marvel’s Tomb of Dracula comic books. Christopher Nolan’s biopic thriller Oppenheimer dominated the box office last year, and the film has been praised for its compelling storyline and incredible portrayal of the father of the atomic bomb. Fans should know that this is not Nolan’s first rodeo when it comes to adapting the life of a real person on the big screen.
Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer / Universal Pictures
He has written a script long ago on the life of aviator Howard Hughes, but the project did not get off the ground because he was beaten to it by fellow veteran filmmaker Martin Scorsese. The latter directed 2004’s The Aviator starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Christopher Nolan revealed he wrote Oppenheimer pretty quickly because he already had experience writing biographical films. He shared with Total Film magazine via Yahoo Entertainment:

While Oppenheimer was Christopher Nolan’s first biographical drama to hit the big screens, this wasn’t the Oscar-winner’s first time penning a script surrounding a real-life figure. Before changing the superhero landscape with The Dark Knight, the director had plans to make a biopic about the American aerospace engineer Howard Hughes, for which he even wrote a script.
But as the story goes, Nolan’s passion project never materialized as before the director could make his pitch, Martin Scorsese was already working on Hughes’ biopic, The Aviator. However, it wasn’t all in vain for Nolan, as his experience working on the script for his Howard Hughes biopic came in handy while penning Oppenheimer.
The Unmade Biopic Made Christopher Nolan’s Experience Penning Oppenheimer Easier A still from The Aviator | Warner Bros.
Speaking of the unmade biopic, Christopher Nolan deemed his script for the canned project the best he’d ever written.
